I was stressed out about having to take a very heavy old sink mounted underneath like this. That little trick with the wire and the piece of wood is very helpful and I feel more confident now I can do this easily. I'm not a beginner but I am getting older and my strength is not what it used to be

Wow! I am sooo glad I found your video! I have exactly the same kind of sink (1963 house) & I'm about to replace it by myself. I couldn't figure out how to get that ring off from around the sink. I thought it was just glued down. I didn't know it was part of the works holding the sink in! I could just see me laying unconscious under the cabinet after the sink falls on my head! Thanks for the video!!!!

Peg Kavanagh So glad to help out! Before I knew how these things worked, I almost squashed my head trying to take out an old cast iron sink.
@pegkavanagh504210 жыл бұрын
Well it's out! Was alot of work getting at all those screws/clips underneath. Then even after they were all removed the ring and the sink were still stuck solid! Took a lot of 'chiseling' around the ring to pry it loose and wouldn't you know, with the ring completely loose, the sink was still stuck! I actually jacked it up from underneath to get it loose then I had an "UH OH!" moment when it came loose and was hanging precariously over the plumbing with the help of the stick and ropes tied to it like you suggested. Problem was - IT'S CAST IRON!! There was no way I could lift it out! Called in some young guns - my son-in-law! It's out, the new one is in! Couldn't have done it without your video!! Thanks again!

are you sure your sink cannot be removed from the top? the sink has a rim frame with the clips to hold in place. If you remove the clips and break the rim frame sealant the sink and the rim frame should come off from the top. I just removed one that way..... but maybe your sink is somehow different. In any case. good video.
@donnaylor53696 ай бұрын
Yeah, after you remove the clips there are some little tabs that keep the sink from dropping (or, if theyre rusted out/gone somehow, it will fall on you). Pop off the ring as demonstrated. Sink comes straight up.

I too am glad I watched this video. I though I was going to need a engine hoist to lift my 100 lbs cast steel kitchen sink from the counter top. It never occurred to me that it is removed from the bottom. But given the weight i'm dealing with, think i'm gonna use a scissor jack to ease it down.

Good vid! I would have liked to see how you take the weight off the safety stick without it falling. I suppose you could snip the wires from underneath while you are under there to catch it. ? I need to remove my ring sink to replace the faucet because there is not enough room for the basin wrench. I would love to see a vid of how to reinstall a hudee ring sink. Seems like it would be more fussy to install than to remove. I am not finding any vids on the installation. All the vids are for self rimming sinks.

thanks for the tip. This is exactly why I am doing at my mom's house. First she just wanted a leaky faucet repaired that looks just like the one you removed that before. Hi, I really appreciate your post. I was checking for a basic guide on the process and happened on your video. Lucky for me, my old cast iron sink was mounted with the Hudee Ring, so I got to see the whole this before jumping. Ours was pretty well lodged in with what I guess was petrified plumbers buddy, so we had to remove the whole counter, cut one part of the ring and pry it off the contertop, whole. Then it occurred to me, what exactly is the point of bottom mounting the sink when you could assemble the ring and clips, then drop it into your hole. Seems a lot easier to me, unless I'm missing something. Will give it a shot and let you know! Thanks again.

Great tips. As a female DIY I was just about to replace sink and add new counter tops but was puzzled by the "Hudee" ring around the sink. Problem solved and the stick was a great tip as I often work by myself and don't have the brute strength of most guys.

I have a Crane cast iron bathroom sink with a Hudee ring. Removed the clips and I can't get the sink to budge.Appears to be some kind of old sealant in the ring. Don't want to damage the countertop. Any suggestions as to how to remove this sink? I am replacing with a self rimming sink.
@jenniesgarage10 жыл бұрын
Maybe try running a blade between the ring and the sink, so you can get the sink separated from the ring. Then you'll have more access to wiggle the ring around and use the blade to gently get it off of the counter. Also check underneath to see if there isn't some plumbing or hardware that is holding things up.

Dude you saved me! I couldn't find a video that has these steel-rimmed sinks, but figured, HOW HARD COULD IT BE? Then I went in there and took clips off proudly, but couldn't lift the damn sink up, no matter how much muscle I put in it and retreated to YT once again where I somehow found your video telling the sink setters trick, how you need to take caution so the sink doesn't FALL (keyword) on you or the break the pcv coming out of the wall... WOW, that sink was (luckily welded) to the undercounter with 60 years of dehydrated soap scum and toothpaste.

Thanks for this! I'm sure removal will be a breeze thanks to this! I'll try not to scratch my old sink, too. ha! ha! I'm removing an 1953 single basin sink just like this one, and replacing it with a similarly aged, but larger, double basin sink which is in way better condition than my sink. Now that I know about clips, I'm worried there may not be enough space in the cabinet below for the sink AND it's clips. Ooopsie! Thankfully the new sink was only $20 at a yard sale if it doesn't fit. Edit: Maybe you can answer... The sink is not deeper, only wider, can I just put an extra clips near the corners lengthwise and forego clips on the sides? In theory this sounds good, but maybe there's something tricky I don't know about. :-)

***** I finally replaced it last year. Turned out it was steel with ceramic coating. Thing shattered and splintered when I removed it. Good thing I was wearing safety glasses. Replaced it with a black Kohler cast iron sink and Delta Fuse faucet. Replaced the old Badge 5 in sink erator with a new top of the line Evolution. Black made the most sense with the black/stainless appliances and red Corian counter. My father's old disposal broke, so my own old popped right in. Thanks again for the video.
