Very nice work, I especially liked the dust control. My only suggestion would be to install the faucet on the new sink before you drop it in. That way you don't have to deal with getting under the sink later and struggling with a basin wrench.

Dan, Thank you so much for posting this helpful and really clear video. My setup was essentially identical to yours, so my wife and I were very happy when we found your video. Our enamel sink was 40 years old and in bad shape but we didn't want to get a new kitchen. We used the same Kraus sink that you did and are really pleased with the result. I can pass on a few lessons learned that might be helpful to someone else doing this. FIRST, I found that using a couple of bottle jacks to help free the old sink from its bed of mortar worked well. It was really stuck but popped free immediately with just a little pressure from the jacks below. SECOND, my tile was on a rather thick bed of mortar, for a total depth of about 2 inches or more, so the supplied bolts were too short. I didn't want to remove a lot of wood, so I bought a kit of the Elkay LK463 bolts. They are expensive but worked. They have a very small head which spins in the Kraus channel, but the hex nuts which they come with are a perfect fit. So I fixed the heads by adding a short plastic spacer to cover the missing threads and then a hex nut which I fastened tightly. I also added some loctite for added security. The kit comes with enough hex nuts to do this, and this worked perfectly. To secure them from below I used a long sleeve 3/8 inch socket. In the final installation, it took just a couple of minutes to fasten the 10 long bolts that I used. I also had a very close side wall on one side of the sink as in the video, and I cut slots like as shown in the video and used two of the supplied Kraus bolts there. I used a router to cut these slots. These two bolts were a big challenge to fasten because of very narrow access space (about 1/2 inch wide and maybe 8 inches deep). The hard part was rotating them 90 degrees after inserting the sink. I eventually got it with the help of a very long screw driver and a long metal ruler. I would recommend cutting these slots with plenty of room to rotate the brackets freely. THIRD, I should have covered the open water lines better, and flushed them out before installing the faucet. I kept my old HansGrohe faucet because it was still working well. When I turned it on there was hardly any flow. I found that it had a small filter at the end which was full of grit from grinding the tile. Everything worked fine after I cleaned out the filter. FINALLY, for someone like me not too familiar with this type of work, I recommend taking your time and carefully thinking through all of the steps. I found it helpful to make practice cuts in tile to get used to controlling the grinder. For the final installation we placed some 2x4's with eyelets in the ends to hold the sink rim just above the caulk so that we could make a final check on clip locations. My wife and I practiced an installation before applying caulk. I used a suction cup to hold and control my end of the sink while lowering it into place, and that worked well. We love the new sink. Thanks again Dan!

Steven, I have to say that you also did a great job as well. I am wondering if it is easy to take out old cast iron sink after you finished tile cut surrounding sink. Dan was lucky to remove old sink easily because his old sink is smaller than his cuts. How about your case? Thanks

I finally decided to do the same thing after watching your video like 11 times. I made the mistake of cutting the opening just a bit too tight and my old sink was installed on a slight diagonal so it didn't come out easily. Had to lift it out from above with a chain, a car jack, and a piece of 2x4. Ended up popping a few tiles. On the bright side now I learned how to fix tiles, lol. Turned out great. Also, setting up a window fan blowing outwards helped tremendously with the dust control. Thank you so much for showing us how to do it.

Bought some diamond blades for the grinder from Amazon for $15 and had the install done in one Saturday. New sink looks amazing.

Good job! So impressed I've subscribed to yoir channel. I'm actually a licenced plumber but have not dealt with removing a tiled in sink but have a customer needing that done. Definitely hoping the available replacement sinks will fit on the old tiles like that. An oscillating mult-tool, with the right blade, would have been much easier in removing the tile instead of the angle grinder. The mult-tool would cause way less to virtually no dust also.

@@johngao4534 Yes. The tile clamps down flanges of the under mounted sink. It may not be the case for every under-mounted sink but you’ll most likely find that the flange stick out by about 2 inches. Once you cut the tile, the flanges are no longer clamped and you can remove in general.

How big is the sink in your video? The only sink size that’ll work to cover the old hole is 33” x 22”. My issue is that my cabinet size is 33.5 maximum. All the 33x22 sink has a minimum cabinet size of 36”. Am I missing something here? Do I need to tear down the walls of the kitchen cabinet so the sink could drop in? Or do I need to keep looking at different brands and see if I eventually run in to one? Thanks!

I just did this on a much more difficult level. My old cast iron sink was at least 80 lbs. Also my new stainless steel dropped down onto the wood ledges (after numerous adjustments) and then I replaced those quarter round tiles around the edges along with corner pieces. Yes you can still order them. I used silicone adhesive to get them to stick to the edges and stainless steel and then used silicone caulk to fill in the gaps. Like you I didn't want to spend $10,000's for a remodel.

@@johngao4534 I cut exactly same as the size of old one to take it out first. The cut size was smaller than the new one's cut-out template. Then I was trying to drop in the new one and kept cutting a little by little to adjust it. I went trial and error method as I'm not professional. You have to make sure the one you are buying must cover your total cut.

@@lifeisbeautiful7496 I was lucky to easily remove old sink after cutting out the tiles. I cut tiles 1/4" larger than Kraus template because I was really worry about my cutting skill. Thanks for your suggestions. Since I have a very small space, I have to put vac in backyard and use a long vac hose from backyard to kitchen, so I keep vac running outside for 4 hours to suck the dust from cutting. I should purchase Kraus 's air gap, but I forgot it. I had to buy one from home depot. That is a junk.

Thank you. We have the same countertop except I have an over the counter sink so it should be easier? I'll let your know. Do you know of any way to do an "under the counter mount" with tile such as this?

I would have loved a more detailed video look how you were bolting the sink down where you had previously notched the plywood out for the shorter bolts.

Excellent job by the way! I did this same type of job myself several years ago and replaced a stamped steel sink like you did with a cast iron one. I now have a friend that wants me to do a job like this for him. Problem is that the sink to be removed is cast iron. I am worried that if after I take out the quarter rounds and if the sink still goes under the tile, I can't just cut though a cast iron sink. If that occurs I suppose I can cut plywood from the bottom, but if I do that I am worried that there might not be enough structure left to support the new sink. Any suggestions?

@@johngao4534 Yes it is. I just did it for a friend of mine and it came right out. However, on his sink they did not have it centered under the quarter rounds, so I had to cut about 1/4 inch into the first tile with a diamond blade.

@@kennethsouthard6042 Great Job! Thanks for your comments. I will be replacing my old kitchen sink using same way. I want to cut tile on one side to verify if the edge of sink appears. If it doesn't, the I will cut more until I see the edge.

@@johngao4534 Even if it is off, it shouldn't be off my much. You can tell how far off it's going to be my measuring from the center of the sink to the start of the quarter rounds on either side. If the measurements match, you should be good. You can't have enough dust control when you do this. My friend and I set ourselves up under plastic and then he held the shop vac right off the edge of my angle grinder. Even then there was still a lot of dust.

not sure how to install our ss sink which will be replacing our old cast iron sink. the sink fits well into the 2 layers of 3/4" plywood. we had to replace the top layer of plywood. but the clips? that's where we're stuck. plus we do have some uneven spots - can we just use the silicone and install it with just that. perhaps weight it down by filling the sinks with water to help adhere it into the silicone? thanks for your help. this is our 4th day - no sink. no dishwasher because that drains thru the sink drains.
