Another tip I'd probably say is buy an expandable ratchet. It can double as a breaker bar for automotive needs if you work beyond small engines.

You could do with a 600mm 1/2" breaker bar for leverage on jobs like that. Safer for your hands as well. They're not a lot of money but really useful kit to have.

Many thanks for all these amazing videos, it's given me the bug to try fixing and selling. Bought my first mower today and it's a briggs and stratton 450 series 148cc Qualcast, only paid 20 quid. Only thing thats needs doing is the governor springs, the rest is immaculate. Hopefully a nice profit with this one

Hi Mower Man - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. A very interesting video, I must check those sockets out. Like everybody else, I've had similar problems in the past. Solutions I've employed have been to cut a new head with a micro disc to accept a smaller socket but my current favourite is to heat around the blade hole with a blow torch, it doesn't have to be red hot, and quench it quickly with water. My perception is that it is the joint between the bolt head and the blade that is seized as the bolt always unscrews out of the crankshaft without issue.

in my case the blade is loose, that bolt is stuck and can't be unscrewed from crankshaft. I've broken the blade because it's meaningless. The shaft can't give it the rotation. I've tried wd-40, power tools like drill and a a longer wrench to remove that bolt. No chance. Please help me :)

@@nomadiclog Hi - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. It's hard to figure out the best way forward without being able to see the issue. If it was me, since the blade is broken I would cut it off completely then drain the oil and petrol, remove the engine and then heat the end of the crankshaft as hot as possible without damaging the crankcase seal. Cool it quickly by sticking it in a bucket of water. Dry it off, turn the engine upside down and soak it in WD40 for a while then then to turn the bolt again. Let me know how you get on.

@@rodneysweetnam8653 thanks for your feedback. Actually I was going to try them one by one but before that I wanted to ask my body builder neighbour if he could try. And some extra protein worked 😄 now I'm looking for a spare blade and a nut which is damaged badly. Blade should be the exact same length with the original, right? I mean, a shorter blade won't do the job I guess. Thanks for your attention.

@@nomadiclog Big Rodders again. It's best to replace the blade with an identical copy. A shorter blade with have a slower tip speed and reduced grass lifting capability if bagging is required.

That's probably what the bar is for - to knock it through in a vice.

I'm going to assume that little bar, that came with the set, was for putting through the socket to knock out the bolt or nut that's been removed, just put socket in a vice then knock it through, because I'm imagining it's stuck tight in there now 👍

hold the impeller and knock the blade round with a hammer the bolt will loosen common fault on hovers people try to fit blade spacers using the wrong spanner all the best from a retired mower fitter

Hiya mate I have a viking 248 with a ecv200 engine on it I got it running well cleaned the carburettor on it but I couldn't get the emulsion tube out every now and again hunts but most of the time it doesn't and its literally 2 or 3 seconds of Hunting then it goes away for away for a long time any tips

I have down same flymo but filed flats on the nut, to fit smaller socket and used long torque wrench for leverage. But good tip for future. But now cant get the blade boss/fan off? Did yours just pull off?

Using 6 point sockets, instead of the usual 12 point sockets will prevent nuts & bolts from rounding off !. All impact sockets are 6 point for that very reason. Always favour 6 point on a impact driver and it will remove nuts and bolts 99% of the time.

@@MowerMan I already guessed you had !. Thats why the use of 6 point sockets prevent the bolts / nuts ever getting in this state in the first place. The damage had already been caused by somebody using the incorrect socket / spanner a LONG LONG time ago. Thats when the grip sockets come into there own. A new bolt is required now or some very careful hand filing to reduce the size the head of the bolts.
