How To Remove a Stuck Brew Group on a Gaggia Brera

Learn the procedure for a removing a brew group which is stuck in the machine. Once removed, you will learn how to cycle the machine so the brew group can be re-inserted. This problem can occur when the machine loses power during a brewing cycle.

Brilliant - couldn't work out why the brew group wouldn't go back in - but my other half admitted she had turned the machine off mid cycle, and this explained it, thanks. Not impressed by the design, though; I'm guessing that there are a few non-internet types who have called out the engineer when this happens.

At 1:27 you say to make sure the little arrows on the brew group line up, but you don’t say how to turn it if they aren’t lined up. So if they are not lined up and you can’t remove it then how do you get them lined up? Did I miss something?

Thanks a lot for the valuable guidence, I had follow this steps completely and it works well now. just additional experience that closing the side cover then put the power "on" was sufficient to reposition the gear back to original placed and the brew group able to rack in back in the normal position.

My problem on this machine is when i press the on button to warm up the machine the rinsing water doesnt come out from the same sprout that the coffee comes out. It goes all in the bottom tray. Hi CH, Sorry to hear you're having difficulties inserting the group. I've worked with a bunch - probably hundreds of Gaggia machines and had no issue inserting groups unless there was an accumulation of coffee etc. in the tracks the group unit slides in on. Be sure to clean the mounting area.

Hi GZ, Hmmm, is the single cup button program to a very low drink volume? Try press and hold on the single cup button to go into programming mode, the machine will start to brew. When you have the amoount you want in cup press the button again to store that amount.

I have a saeco intelia hd8752 manufactured in 2013. I was successful in getting the brew group removed. I did a solid cleaning of full machine, not knowing I wouldn't be able to place the brew group back in. The internal gear won't align properly with the brew group. I have the two triangle arrows lined up on the brew group. I've tried doing the steps you show with no success getting the gear inside to go back to home position. The gear turns clockwise and counterclockwise a few times then stops. The service error 4 still appears after every attempt. Over 15 tries. Is there a brew group sensor that needs to be replaced. If so, what is the part number? Can you help?

Hi KD, Unfortunately I'm not intimately familiar with that make or model so cannot advise on part numbers. Sounds like the internal gear in the machine (not the group) is out of position. Sometimes just unplugging machine, wait 10 seconds, plug back in, and turn power on will cause the internal gear to return to the proper position. Here's a video on a similar machine which may help if that doesn't work. There is an easier way to try before going in with a screwdriver. Try putting the machine through the test mode. There are several videos on KZbin on that. On the second (or the third) step of the test cycle the machine will move brew unit into a different position. For me it kicked the machine out of the descaling loop. It quickly finished the rinse cycle and was ready to brew!

Thank you for the video! As my Philip 3200 started up and the power got interrupted, and the brew unit became stuck in non-neutral position. So weird that it doesn't reset itself just by turning it off and on. Without your video, I would have to go through the whole service route through Philips, which means 2-4 weeks without espresso! I especially appreciate that the technician mentioned the type and size of the screwdriver, because I didn't own one and had to go get. Love getting coffee through you too. My Brera had an issue with a slow water flow, your video on cleaning the selector valve fixed that, but then the grinder went into overdrive and wouldn't stop grinding every time I turned the machine on! I put the machine aside for three weeks while searching for someone to fix it and resorted to my old cafetière. Today, out of sheer desperation I found this video, and Walla issue fixed, just had a delicious cup of coffee. Thank you!!!

Thanks for the video! I took our Gaggia Babila apart this morning to clean it, and since I put the Brew Group back in it has failed to produce coffee! The coffee gets ground and put in place, but the water just seems to end up going into the inside drip tray, and nothing comes out the external spout! Can you help with some things to try please?

Hi WJ, You are welcome for the video. Is the water that ends up in the drip tray pure water or is it coffee colored? If coffee colored most likely problem is the brew group's top spout was put on backward. The only way this could happen is if you took the group apart and put the spout on backward. If water in drip tray is clear problem is likely a poor seal between the group and the boiler spout. The boiler spout is behind the brew group. It's white with 2 o-rings. Makes sure the o-rings are there and in good condition.

We have had 2 gaggia machines recently: both were wonderful...until they broke themselves. The brewgroups got stuck mid-cycle, sensors unaccountably stopped working. Do yourself a favor: buy a decent coffee machine that does not have moving parts. These coffee robots don't last.

Hi, Thanks for the comment. Like most machines these will not last forever but with a little maintenance they should provide years of trouble free service. We get regular reports from Gaggia owners of 10,000, 20,000 even 30,000 brewing cycles. Key maintenance items: 1. remove and rinse brew group weekly. 2. Descale as recommend based on source water hardness and water filter usage. 3. Deep clean and lubricate brew group every 6 months.

@@Wholelattelovepage sorry as I am a Hungarian. So I can turn the brew unit from start position to end position its all ok. The engine can do everything in the TEST MODE as well as in normal mode. But I cant put back the brew unit, cuz my engine shaft(?) is actually upside down. I saw a lot of videos about that shaft with the thin and thick sides on it but mine just can't turn that much. When I do power off-on hard reset it is do the reset but still not in neutral spot, exactly inverse like yours. :/ Second problem now is that clean water, clean system, but the water is not coming thru anymore. Heated but not coming. I hear some quite pump sound in testing to push water but not coming thru. Thank You for answer, and I glad that I can reach You after a lot of years of this actual video

Well done! One comment is that if I took this seriously before I purchased the unit, I would have had second thoughts. But it bailed out our Titanium model, which has the same brew unit. If "How to remove a stuck brew unit" gets 602,000 views (a different Whole Latte Love video), that says design flaw to me. But I love the machine when it works, and we're in the 8000 cup range and heading rapidly for 10,000 cups. Take that, MTBF.

Hi Mark, Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience. 8,000? Now that's something but not unusual. We know they can go to 20K with proper maintenance. Many stuck units are the result of inadvertant operator error. Suppose that potential could be designed out.
