It's crazy how much work goes into lead paint removal. Is that all on the homeowner's dime, or are there funds to help offset the cost of that? It seems like if you're in an historic district, the city would want to preserve the buildings and so might help with cleanup.
@DarkRaptor9910 жыл бұрын
A few places might have some funds for that, but sadly most homeowners have to eat the cost of lead paint remediation. Some companies have some vacuum sanding systems like Festool that are good enough to allow you to sand and remove the lead contaminated surfaces. It sucks and if you look at it if your a contractor that gets busted working on a house without testing for lead and it has lead paint OSHA and the EPA are not going to be forgiving this, fall arresting are the two really big things the government is really pushing right now.
@TNtoolman10 жыл бұрын
Yes it is the homeowners dime... whether it is directly paid by the home owner ... or if it is government funds, then the homeowner dumps the cost on the rest of us through taxes.

lead paint test kit? What is that and what's exactly for? I'm about to scrape off paint in a room and I suspect there's old paint with lead. Any tips or information are GREATLY appreciated. I don't have astronaut suit or even mask to wear :(
@dilhangurbuzergamingchanel73063 жыл бұрын
Hi, what you’ll probably want to use is a 3M half gas mask, they help better then cheaper, lower grade gas masks. You’ll also want a reusable hazmat suit, and most importantly if there’s moldings in the windows and doors, if they look ugly you may be able to use a crowbar and rip them off, for baseboards you may use a paint scrapper. PLEASE USE A GAS MASK AS N95 MASKS SHOULDNT BE USED TO REMOVE LEAD OR ANY OTHER THINS LIKE POPCORN CELLING!!!! YOU ARE GAMBLING WITH YOUR HEALTH!!! Then if you want to keep the molding I would just bring it to a place where they chemically strip it off. You could also just scrap off the windows but if it’s thick mounding (Like it has edges). Then you can do option 1 which is replace or option 2 which is remove them carefully. If you’re doing doors also you can scrap it off, but that will take a while. Personally I recommend Costco nitrile gloves, been using them for years for lead removal. The gloves don’t tear very easily either.
@dilhangurbuzergamingchanel73063 жыл бұрын
Also the sharpening tools aren’t really nessary, we sharpen hours every year or so. Also for hazmat suit, I would just recommend washing it in a different type of washing machine (Perhaps a old one) if you want to use the hazmat suit again.
@dilhangurbuzergamingchanel73063 жыл бұрын
And also if you’re using a 3M half mask I would recommend 3M googles, if you use there anti fog spray then it’s the best. You still kinda sweat but it’s your best bet.
@giottolaudo76722 жыл бұрын
You mean a *respirator* not a "gas mask". And N95 is *fine* for lead, P100 is better. What I *think* you're trying to say is "don't use a cheap disposable dust mask for lead removal" which is wise, because those cheap dust masks do not seal properly. A proper respirator is essential. Gas mask? Not so much.
@giottolaudo76722 жыл бұрын
Oh, I should note: the poorly sealed disposable dust masks aren't great for lead particles, but they're stellar against much smaller, finer viral particles. Or at least that's what I'm told by experts. Some kind of magic apparently, which is why (until recently) an ordinary scarf or cloth bandana was also (legally) acceptable. Science is amazing.

I honestly wish I took lead more seriously I knew it was bad but I didn't realize how bad. I used a butane torch and scraper and it peels right off. I did have a chemical and particle mask on but not sure if I should still worry about fumes or not, plus I'm not sure when I last changed the filters 😬

@mick2spic3 жыл бұрын
As long as the old lead paint is in decent condition. It’s good to sand old trim paint if it’s shiny to ad adhesion for the new paint. But sanding lead paint would put lead dust in the air, so shouldn’t do that if kids are or will be around the home. Some non toxic paint also might not have good adhesion and could peel if bumped. From what I have heard lead out leech into the newer paint layers. I don’t know how long that takes if that is true. Which isn’t a huge deal as long as the paint is adhered onto whatever it’s painted on to. I tip I have used before is wet sanding and not allowing the lead dust to get in the air by using water and wet sand paper. That’s if you are painting trim that is shiny and worried about it having lead. After wet sand just wash with water very well. Can do that for any small spot of lead paint that has chipped or is peeling

Is lead present in trace amounts even in "lead free" paint? I tested my apartment, which is in an old building, but all the walls in my unit were erected and painted in the 90s.
@MidwestMountainMan5 ай бұрын
Did you use a lead test kit from a hardware store or did you send the chips to a lab? Hardware store kits are notorious for false positives... logic is that it's much more harmful to say something is safe when it isn't. A house built in the 90's should be lead-free, though someone could have grabbed some old paint cans or bought them from a country without bans.

I hope you're not still waiting for a reply to do something. I would tear it out if it's failing off. If it's still fairly intact and flat, you can 'laminate' it with 1/4"-3/8" drywall (using longer drywall screws) before refinishing and painting it. You have to find and mark all the joists/nailers with a snap line. Unless it's plaster on lath--then just load it up with screws and expect a lot of 'misses'.

I love how the cameraman and the TV hosts can be in the same room as the guy stripping and they aren't wearing any protective equipment. Ditto about This Old House people who walk around active construction sites with no hard hat Anyway, homeowners don't care about this stuff. In all my years I've never heard of painters asking about if its lead paint they have to sand and repaint. If a small general contractor talks to a homeowner about a reno and they ask anything about asbestos or lead paint they might as well grab their tools and walk back to their truck, the homeowner will just find someone who won't ask those questions

@@georo1499 I don't agree. As an owner of a 121 yr old house, I wouldn't ever knowingly live in a house with lead dust floating around, having fallen down into the registers or cracks of the window casings or floor and being kicked up and airborne from vacuuming, dogs and kids running around or the heating/air kicking on because some half-wit did a half-A$$ed job, regardless of the cost. If I hire anyone else to do the work, they better do it properly using a HEPA vacuum AND a HEPA air cleaner, sealing off all the other rooms and using appropriate coverings, including shoe coverings, or they won't do it at all. Period!
@mick2spic3 жыл бұрын
@@bellecraig Yea, I don’t blame you being careful. People living in different parts of the country have much difference in the age of their homes. Lead was banned in 1979, but Its use started to wane down before that. It’s the older homes people need to worry about. A lot of those homes have lead pipes as well. Lead isn’t going to affect older people that much, it’s the younger kids still developing that can really be damaged from it.
@MidwestMountainMan5 ай бұрын
You'll notice that they're never in the room with the hazmat guy while he's actively disturbing the lead. I mean, the cameraman is, but I presume he's wearing protective gear as well. Walking around a house that has lead paint sitting on the walls and trim is fine. It's when the lead is disturbed that it becomes more dangerous.
@bobbg90413 жыл бұрын
Im watching a show the painter did handrails on a porch, at the end there was a lesson about lead paint and how it has to be delt with. Then I think of all the pipes in our nation that are for drinking water human consumption and it is delivered by the city to your home in lead pipes. Governments decided its bad enough to remove from older homes, but not bad enough to change the city's water supply lines, didnt copper pipes solder have to be changed becuse it had lead in it. I clearly remember that in the 80s.
@MidwestMountainMan5 ай бұрын
Yes, lead pipes are present in a lot of municipal water lines. Some have replaced all of them (most infamously Flint). But others haven't, because the minerals in the water coat the pipe and act as a seal. The Flint crisis happened because they swapped water sources and the new source required chemicals that also stripped the natural coatings, so the water became contaminated with an unhealthy amount of lead. Additionally, lead pipes in the home are much more dangerous, because the water "sits" in them for prolonged periods and leech, while municipal pipes always have water flowing through them.

I think that contractors should be obligated by code to protect the homeowner/owner. When the homeowner does their own work it should be up to them to decide whether they need to be protected or not.
