Completed this job today on a 2004 Allroad twin turbo. Absolutely could not have done it without your video. Used all the tips, was careful not to strip bolts, had some trouble getting the CV axle out and in, but eventually coaxed it into place. Did not have to remove the upper control arms and tie rod but if those areas are not bound up, it would make it a lot easier. Thanks a million.

this video is great same procedure for fwd passat. All went smoothly and this was helpful. I am glad I could just turn the wheel hard left and get the axle out without dropping the lca or jacking the suspension. You need to straighten the wheel back to almost center to install axle and then just tighten and torque in proper sequence. This helped me save a ton of time. Thanks for the video keep them coming.

Surprisingly easy. A bit of work to get the old one out, but quick to get the new one in. Thanks so much - I already had the brake job done when I noticed the leaking boot which the shop had flagged. Thanks a ton for putting this up!

Thank you for sharing. This was extremely helpful. After following your procedure on a 2001 Audi A6 quatro, I found that disconnecting the upper control arms and tie rod, I was able to get better access to the axle and make this job much quicker. I hope others find this useful should they encounter clearance issues like I did. Although it sounds like it adds work, the assembly is pretty easy to work with and it will really save a lot of time on the over all job.

" THAT was a lot easier than I thought it would be....." CLASSIC comment! ;-) Same story on my Audi A6..... the centre locating bolts cracked off much easier than I thought they would....... these german cars are still made out of high quality steel with bolts that just don't corrode..... UNLIKE certain other manufacturers cars I could mention(!) My CV joints calme with new bolts to install, which is ALWAYS good practice..... but, in my opinion.... there was nothing wrong with the old ones. Excellent video, presented by someone who clearly knows what he's doing. Top marks.

If the new bolts are made in China during the last 5-8 years they would be cheaper low quality steel to reduce the cost. Stick with original bolts

Hi, I just have a quick question regarding compatibility on cv axles. I own a 06 Lexus GS AWD and need to replace my cv axle. Problem is those axles are almost impossible to find on the market currently. The 07 GS350 fits but the one I bought isn't AWD, will rear wheel drive axles generally fit AWD models, are they normally designed the same or a little different. I called the company I bought it from, one guy said it would the other said it wouldn't. Need to replace soon before it breaks on the road, any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Merry Christmas!

If you are in a northern climate, for sure do as he says and clean out those bolt heads. Use some household cleaning spray, like 409, use pick tool or an old fork, bend back all but one prong. Then spritz with water and use a small wire brush. And then tap in bits with small hammer. Sure takes 10-15 minutes, but if you strip one of the those bolts, that will make for way more work.

Great video! Thanks,. I have the exact same car. Question: I bought the recommended axle from Autozone. When I put them side-by-side, the transmission side cv joint and axle shaft are the same length, but the hub side cv joint is about an inch shorter. I installed it and torqued it up fine. Obviously, the hub side cv joint expanded. Is that okay? Will it fail? I just drove it about 120 miles at 70 mph. Seems okay.

@Snowdog216
@Snowdog216 3 жыл бұрын
Great video, Thanks. If the CV joint is pulled out etiher from breaking/failing or being pulled out, rather than tapped out from the area were the bolts fit (as shown on video), the CV may have pulled out, and that will not go back in. You can feel around the inside (close to center of vehicle) rubber boot. If you can feel metal and the boot is distorted, then you may have to release a control arm as the CV joint is extended say 1 inch and that may prevent removal as shown in the video. The other thing is to rotate the inner part, it may fit back into the engine area better in a different position. The other option is to use a larger size punch and hit the center of the axle, if you are say 1/2 inch short that might be enough to move it. Last options, remove the rearward control arm at the ball joint and see if that provides additional room, and next is remove the tie rod end and have someone else pull the knucle.

Would you ever use an Impact wrench on those cv bolts? or no because the strip easy
@user-sl4rk5zm1j
@user-sl4rk5zm1j 7 жыл бұрын
No, Impacts are discouraged on VW or any German vehicles(very different mindset). If the bolts aren't coming out then there is some sort of obstuction. The torque specs are far lower on German vehicles since the engineering is so much more precise. Some people will say you can use the impact on the wheels but it puts it too tight, so the torque wrench says its "Up to torque" but not that its "OVER TORQUED" Resulting in the bolts getting stuck, overheating(not releasing heat during braking) and breaking.. German engineering had all natural factors and elements in mind IT is not like an america vehicle where you can feel ok to leave a panel undone. No parts have a single function. All are needed to work together to create something living. I like the MK4s because of the precision and mature mentality used to create them..A standard I worry that is being lost. Of course some had issues but most issues were caused by bad techs who's ego's made them not listen to the manufacturers. I think this is a good video overall but there were some things that

@nadaone82
@nadaone82 9 жыл бұрын
themarine09 using a torque wrench on the socket, initially tighten the axle bolt to 140 ft lbs, then switch the axle bolt socket to a breaker bar (1/2" drive) (possibly with a cheater pipe/longer lever) and with the socket in the axle bolt and the breaker bar at the 9:00 o'clock position, tighten 1/2 turn until the breaker bar handle is at the 3:00 o'clock position. Make sure the socket bit is well inserted in the axle bolt and you don't wobble as you tighten down for this final 1/2 turn. Does that make sense?

I got torn cv boot replaced(new boot kit) on front wheel of my 2003 1.8t passat 10 days back. Washed the car yesterday and sprayed water on the wheels. Now, when I back up with wheels turned, the Abs and esp light turns on and stays on. When I turn off the car and then start it again, the Abs and esp light goes off. Could the repair shop have messed something up or could it be that when I washed the car, some dirt got on the abs sensors that’s causing these lights to come on when I back up?

Depends on the car. I have a 99 Audi A4 and they're built similarly to VW Pssat. The part is about $200 each for new. You can find cheaper ones for about $100 each. I just did mine about a month ago.

Actually there is no need to remove the shield; you just turn the axle and UN-bold always at the easy access spot (on the down side).

@@Uncommonsensetoo I got the shield off easy and the six M 10 boots. But spent 90 min getting the axle out and back in again. Retrospectively I should have at least tried the tie rod. When I do the passenger side I’ll do it your way. Thx.

@@aantalisg Oh, I did not think the driver side had a heat shield. I looked and did not see one. I replaced the passenger side axle. I am glad it worked for you eventually. Yes, it is pretty tight so loosening the the upper control arms and tie rod made it pretty easy to take the axle in and out.
