I had worked at a school and a huge attic type area housed air con units, ducts, cabling and other things that needed servicing. This building was very old and in the past asbestos cement fire wall had been smashed to get access to the different parts. All the broken debris lay where it had fell. Tradesmen went there often to work. One day some tradesmen came to our building and said they would not work there because of the asbestos. My foreman told them it had been tested and was not asbestos. The tradesmen then went back up there to work. I told the foreman that I thought it was asbestos. He said that if he thought that he would not have sent them there. Anyway that foreman left and a new one arrived and as I was sent there a lot of times to work I expressed my concern to the new foreman. But still nothing happened. Then after that I was asked to work in a part where I would have crawled through an area and raise dust. I said I was not prepared to go there. I then sent a sample away to be tested and it came back positive to asbestos and politely presented it to higher up person at work. It was raised as one of the main reasons for being sacked as they said I had it tested to undermine my foreman. I don't blame people if they would not believe that but what I said is 100% true. And I still have all the documents to back my story.

I employed some people, and I really appreciate the fact that you raised this topic with your employer, I’m horrified and disgusted that they like to the professionalism to deal with it how they should have. Let me assure you that you deserve better. I’m glad that you have moved on. Say something, say something, do something. In my mind, there is nothing more important than people.

Thank you for making this video. My partner and I bought our first home late last year and it's a 1930s house that most likely has asbestos in in. We are planning a kitchen Reno because we only have a wood oven at the moment so this video will come in very handy. Cheers from a fellow Aussie. :)

What do you recommend for a house that has asbestos siding on the outside of the house? It’s a ceramic type of siding. Contractor removed the first row close to the ground as we are working on fixing foundation. Would it be safe if I removed the rest of the siding completely off the house?

Hey, I work in plantrooms on refrigeration for my job, a lot of the rooms are made from Hardiflex asbestos board and the edges are not sealed and there are fans sucking up against the edges. Would you think the rooms are safe to enter without any PPE as long as the asbestos is not disturbed by man? or would you recommend a dusk mask. Because I know 1 fiber doesnt kill but these rooms are very dusty
@bebeurie6822
@bebeurie6822 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely think that wearing protection is a must! It might be hard to distinguish the normal dust from asbestos dust, so be over cautious! Better than taking the risk

Yea its a shame ive swept up in most of these rooms and even the really bad room where its everywhere, even on the duct tape for the chiller aircon, and all the walls are poorly maintain asbestos cement, but in future I will be wearing a mask in there. All that I know is @ trade school, which is government owned, all the electrical training side we work on, all the electrical components are mounted to bituminous asbestos electrical board with some exposed edges, and this is the brown asbestos (the stuff where there is not much chance compared to white) and we are all throwing this stuff around. Cant get away from it :) But just something I would ad in...

I think i've found an old asbestos fireproof board in an old cupboard that used to be an 70's air heater system. It is on the roof of the cupboard and has a sticker on it from 1999 saying it "may" contain asbestos. It looks alright and has been up there over 35yrs i've been here. However, i noticed the cut edges are exposed and not flush against the wall. And the inside material looks kinda like plaster as if it could be flakey but it isnt flaking. Wondering if i should just leave it there. Been here over 35yrs and not dead yet. Or maybe wet the edges and fill in the gaps with filler to close off the exposed cut edges then paint over the entire thing with gloss paint.
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 6 жыл бұрын
Usually asbestos left untouched is generally safe. It's when it is sanded or broken up that fibres are released into the air. Filling the gaps with caulk and then painting over will definitely seal the product.

Without a photo I can't tell you if it is or isn't asbestos or the type of asbestos. If your worried use an asbestos hygienist to test it. But DON'T disturb or remove it. Also Silicon gap filler is good to use. This video only shows how to remove bonded asbestos not friable (that's the stuff you should be worried about).

Seems mad watching this. My neighbour just had a builder round who broke his asbestos garage apart, no spray, no signs, he didn't even wear a mask. I saw him smash some with a hammer a few times to get it to size to fold into a plastic sheet.

I find it hard to believe that you need a "professional" wearing a hazmat suit to remove one piece of material. It is not like fibers are going to be blowing around. If you can live with this material then you can remove the material.
@grumpy_poo
@grumpy_poo 9 жыл бұрын
peggyt1243 You can't 'live' with the material when it has aged or the surface breaks down .... that is the problem... over time it becomes brittle and snaps.. the fibres escape very easily when it is disturbed.
@peggyt1243
@peggyt1243 9 жыл бұрын
grumpy poo My understanding is that "asbestosis", the disease that results happened after years of contact with loose asbestos by the workers in asbestos factories. Perhaps I am naive but spending one day exposed to the stuff is not life threatening nor is exposure to rigid asbestos products in the home.
@grumpy_poo
@grumpy_poo 9 жыл бұрын
This is the most publicised .... however, in uk it has been found that children and those with vulnerable health, exposed to environmental slab asbestos in the home and schools in the 1950's and 1960's , (as described by Shane,) developed asbestosis in later life with very little exposure . . Nothing was known at this time.... It was the post war wonder insulator and fire retardent material. It was used extensively ... rigid asbestos becomes brittle and breaks exposing fibres .... mighty dangerous.

Barry Roberts I guess being a baby boomer, I find a lot of the current safety laws to be overkill. I was not raised in bubble wrap. I drank water from lead pipes, drank untreated water from the lake, breathed second hand smoke etc. LOL, back then parents used to spray bug killer every night in children's bedrooms to prevent them from being bitten in the night. God only knows what was in the spray,
