You saved me from a heart attack. One useful tip for those who have a longer pipe and have to cut it shorter: don't cut it too short, I almost pushed the whole pipe inside my fuel tank with my screwdriver after letting that gate loose...causing a 2nd potential heart attack. Had to use my non-existing surgical skills to get it out from there, 1cm shorter and the whole pipe falls inside the tank.

Thank you! Thank you! This video just saved my *ss! Here's what I did: I cut the tubing like you said, but probably didn't have to in the end. I didn't have as long of screwdriver as you did, so I slid a screwdriver down underneath the tubing that was stuck. And like you said, it stops, but can then be pushed in further with a little extra push. That must be that second flap/gate you can't see. I wasn't able to pull the tubing out, so I switched to slipping the screwdriver in on the topside of the tubing. Once in, and through the lower flap/gate, I pushed the screwdriver down to "open" that gate while pulling on the tubing. It worked. The tubing finally came out. I was surprised how crimped/smashed the tubing was from the flap/gate closing on it. Thank you again! I was out of town in a rural area when this all happened.
@Phatphatyo2 жыл бұрын
Yikes. I was in a garage so it was easier. It would be harder out in the sticks I’d imagine. I’m glad it helped, and yeah, those flaps really push on it- more than you’d think. Unless it closes harder when you pull on it. Maybe that’s it..

Thank you! This video saved me! This worked great on my 2017 Chevy Camaro so it will probably work on a lot of car makes and models. The key seems to be putting the screw driver into the tubing. And, yes, you do have to push hard. Never again will I try to siphon gas out of my car. I often used to siphon gas out of my car 25 years ago or so to fill up my lawn mower. I hadn't done it in years and thought I would easily siphon some gas out for a new generator I wanted to try out. Nope! Modern cars are different! I'm sure this video saved me a least $200.00 and the embarrassment of going to a mechanic with this issue.

So with a soft tube like that, you're going through center of tube because the tube itself is pinched? Because I have a rigid metal flex tube that is ribbed. Have not tried yet, but not sure if this method will work. Perhaps ill have to put a rod along side the funnel tube to get the 2nd door open? Thoughts?
@Phatphatyo7 ай бұрын
Yeah I don’t know if I’d dare try a ribbed tube unless it’s super slick and you think it could slide past the catch. Yes that’s why I had the second tube. Although- I do think that if I had the right size and length of hard plastic tubing (my outer layer) that I could have just used that. It slid back and forth decent and was bigger than my inner. Because the inner was so small it took so danged long to siphon. Bigger would have been a lot faster.

Great video, thanks. I had this same problem and before I saw this video I used a regular screwdriver OUTSIDE the tube to lift the inner flap to get the hose out. I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Jerokee. Is that a sign I may have damaged the flap? Thanks!
@Phatphatyo4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know on that one. I’d be guessing but if I were a betting man I’d say it was a weird pump. Hope that’s all it was. The pump shuts off when fuel hits a sensor on the nozzle indicating it’s near the top. If the flap was somehow half open and half closed or something for fuel to splash up and hit the sensor then in theory the nozzle should hold it open while you’re gassing up. I’m just guessing though. Let me know what happens next time you fill. I’m curious.

I’ve got a video on that too. This was actually my truck and I was practicing to be sure I didn’t mess up the neighbors truck. His was the one I was actually gonna siphon late one night before he traded it in the next morning. The dealer didn’t give him much of a heads up. Search my other vids and there’s a siphon vid.

I had this happen to me. And all I did was put a screwdriver in the pipe and pushed the bottom flap ad he hose came out. No different than the gas nozzle pushing on the flap.
@Phatphatyo Жыл бұрын
Yeah if it’s just the first flap then that’s all you’d need to do is open it like the gas nozzle would do. But- If you’re far enough down that you catch the second flap or the rollover ball farther down, then it gets stuck bad. And the harder you pull the tighter it gets.

Haven’t been able to get this solution to work yet, but..,,,,, I tried some things that Probably made it worse, and dug that rubber pipe in to the flapper. they say Ford has a better idea, but this wasn’t a better idea. Frankly because the thieves will know to put a funnel down past the 2nd flapper, then a flexible pipe Inside that for the rest of the way. Then they’ve got your gas. Still the best way is to have a gas lever inside the vehicle.
@Phatphatyo4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know how far down that catch goes but this is just a thought I never tried- I’d the tube you’re using fits inside the funnel behind your back passenger seat, it holds the flaps open, or at least the top one. If it fits in the funnel, try running it through and opening the flap with the funnel. You think? Again I’ve never tried it, I’m not sure if it will work. If you do though, let me know.
@Phatphatyo4 жыл бұрын
Even my solution in the video was hard to do though. Know that. Also if you dig too hard you can cut through your tubing you used. Be careful of that too so you don’t cut it and get it stuck in there.
@armstronglance4 жыл бұрын
Phatphatyo I do have a long funnel that the rubber hose might have fit inside of. But I cut the tube short to try your solution, and now the tube is too short to grab if I try the funnel. 🙁 I haven’t given up yet. I’ll reply here again if I get it out tomorrow. (Sure feel like an idiot for doing this. Only reason I did it was because of the virus thing & we didn’t want to go into town)
@Phatphatyo4 жыл бұрын
armstronglance sorry no I meant your trucks funnel. If you are 2015 or up like this one it is behind the passenger side rear seat. Fold it down and it’s on the back wall. It’s a special funnel from ford.
@Phatphatyo4 жыл бұрын
armstronglance funny you say that though because I’m headed out the door not to fill my truck (36 gal tank) so that it could be siphoned into the wife’s Prius if needed. Gas hasn’t been scarce in Idaho yet but with a little gti I run around in I may as well keep the truck full for just in case stuff.
@chatomairi4 жыл бұрын
Why not put the funnel in the tank and the tube through the funnel.
@Phatphatyo4 жыл бұрын
You could and it would get past one catch but you’d still have a ball valve in there. It’s the turnover protection valve that doesn’t let fuel come out if you land on the roof. The problem is that if you need the larger tube around the smaller tube, both don’t typically fit in a funnel. One will but not the thicker of the two and still let the smaller one in. If you got the right sizes you could but it would be all but impossible to get it exactly right. But for the first valve you could. You’d just still have to face the second one.

I have a spiral metal tube stuck. This didn’t work
@Phatphatyo2 жыл бұрын
Oh crap. Spiral is probably snagging it on the threads. I don’t know how you’d get that out. Will it mess it up to back it out like a big screw? Twist it counter clockwise?
@RT-gq3bh2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. It’s a nozzle on a metal gas can. It’s probably segmented as opposed to spiral. The plastic face is some how attached to the metal pipe going to the gas tank. Threaded, clipped press fit???
@Phatphatyo2 жыл бұрын
@@RT-gq3bh shoot I don’t know on that one. Most of those old segmented nozzles are either smooth enough that I’d think they’d slide out maybe catching a bit on the segments or ribbed more heavily which I’d think would have been hard to get in. I don’t know how to get that out unfortunately. Sorry I’m not more help. I’ll think on it.
@RT-gq3bh2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I took it to the Tire Shop. The guy got it out by poking with a screwdriver on the flapper and pulling hard. I probably didn’t pull hard enough. Thanks again.
