Very useful, but getting the siphon started was a bear on the dead vehicle that could not be rolled or jacked up on dirt. I used a pump, and detached the hose at the front end when it was below the tank level, then managed to get it onto a short and squat tank, which was the only kind of tank that was entirely below the bottom of the vehicle tank. Then, not having enough short tanks on hand, kept the siphon going and repeated the process by tilting tanks and transferring from the short tank to the other containers, which was much easier, then back to the short tank. The vehicle died after I filled it with very expensive ethanol free recreational fuel for storage purposes, which I can use for my outboard motors.

the question is, will the "open gas tank" light be shown on the dash after I do this? Because I need to siphon premium fuel from my raptor to my other car.
@Phatphatyo6 жыл бұрын
Faisal Q it shouldn’t no. I don’t know that these style of caps have a light because there’s no cap. Maybe it has one for the fuel door if that’s open but you don’t have to mess with that to do this way of siphoning. Mine never came on anyway. The story of my siphoning was that I had a neighbor with a 2017 xlt truck and he had just filled his 36gal tank with premium and the dealership had been watching for a certain truck for him. Right as he filled up he got the call that his new truck hit the lot so we siphoned it all into my nearly empty 36gal (the white one in the video)

Faisal Q oh weird. Never heard that. I’ve used the funnel a time or two and have never seen a light. I used it in this video and neither trucks light came on. I used it once at a dealership too when I was doing some maintenance on my truck. To kill time I went walking around and some employees were trying to fill a truck that had run out and couldn’t get the nozzle in (pretty funny actually for the ford dealership to not know about it). Anyway I showed them where it was stored and saw them use it and I actually ended up test driving it and there wasn’t a light.
@Phatphatyo6 жыл бұрын
Faisal Q there is a flap at the top that the funnel keeps open, there is a catch just a few inches down (it’s a bear to get out if the hose gets stuck. Subscribe if you’d like and I’ve got another video of how to get it out if you do get a vinyl hose stuck). That’s why you use slick hard tubing for the outer tube. It slides right past and won’t catch. Finally, there is a ‘ball’ at the bottom that is mainly for stopping fuel from leaking if it flipped over and landed on its top. I suppose a small hose could get stuck in that ball catch but it would be awfully hard to do because it’s a gravity valve. If the truck is on it’s wheels it should stay open. I wouldn’t worry about that one. Worst case if it did pull shut you could just wiggle the hard line or push on it and it would force the ball open again. I’d ignore that bottom one. It won’t be a problem.

If it happens don’t freak out and take it to a dealer. People do that all too often. Just be sure your tubing is hard plastic or pvc type that will slide out easily. If you got one that slid easy enough you probably don’t need an inner tube. That would make it a ton faster because the inner one has to be smaller than the outer the way I did it. You probably don’t need 20’ but you need enough to get from the opening down into the tank. But don’t forget from the opening down to the ground too. I put a lot in there so I knew it was at the bottom. If it’s getting fuel it may not be on the bottom but if it’s coiled up down there it likely is. That was my thoughts. You’d need at least 10 though just to go from the ground up into it and then down to tank level.
@Phatphatyo2 жыл бұрын
Oh and the outer is rigid. It’s pretty hard (slick). The reason you should use 2 layers is that with the two catches its hard to shove that much tube in (and out) of there. The hard stuff you just need enough to hit the two catch points and the rest can be hard or soft. If you only used one tube though be sure it’s hard or it won’t slide through. If you shove 6-8 feet in there though remember you have to get that much back through those catches vs just having enough of the other to hold them open and then the other slides semi-freely.

How did you get past the flip over valve? I got both tubes that far and it won’t go past the flip over valve..
@Phatphatyo5 жыл бұрын
The flip valve should be open. It only closes when the vehicle is flipped on its lid. In theory that valve should be open for you. I will say it’s hard to get past a couple of those catches. The best advice I have is to cut your tubing to a sharper angle. When I first did this (this was my first and only time trying this so it was a bit of an experiment) I cut an angle and it wasn’t enough to sneak past all of the catches so I pulled it and cut it sharper and it went fatter but still got stuck. I took it out again and cut it to an insane point, way overkill and it went in better. It did get stuck a time or two but i twisted it and made it “roll” in there and it avoided and danced around a couple of snags. Remember that the hard outer tubing like I used is way better than the soft stuff. I can’t emphasize enough how important the hard stuff is. It won’t get stuck in there. If you do get tubing stuck I’ve got a video for that too but the hard stuff is so slick that it slides better. Just be sure you have a wicked point on it and if it gets stuck rather than do a back and forth push and pull, twist it and make it roll over in there. Look at 0:32. It shows both sets of tubing. The hard outer stuff isn’t cut yet. Cut a sharp angle on it from the corner of the tip about an inch to inch and a quarter down it. About the length of the width of the tag in the video so it’s a steep angle and it should step or roll over any catches well as well as sneak into small gaps at that ball valve so when you do push on it it can wedge it out of the way if needed.
@ajones28755 жыл бұрын

So I put 85 gas in my 2011 Honda Civic by accident. should I siphon it or ride it out? I’m just wondering if this will really cause problems to my car
@Phatphatyo3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. I had a civic and never did. That’s new enough that it will dial back the timing and just not make as much power (I’m talking a hp or two is all). I’d recommend never running 91 or 93 or whatever grade you have for premium. You just spend more and blow it out the tail pipe. If it was a really high performance car or you were going out for track day and had it red lined all day maybe but no you’re fine running 85 through a civic. Those Danged Hondas are bulletproof. I used to throw all my old gas from the lawnmower cans and stuff in it to get rid of it. Newer cars will advance the timing a bit under higher revs (Honda calls theirs v-tec) to produce more power under a high demand and then dial it back again when it doesn’t need power (to get better mileage). With lower grade gas your civic will just not advance timing quite so far. With higher grade gas it will advance it farther. It adjusts automatically. I have a golf R now (300hp from a little 2 liter means it’s advancing it pretty far to get that) and I don’t even run it in that. Maybe in a BMW M series but not from these little 4 cylinder cars. Don’t sweat it. Save the money.

You’d have to have a primer bulb. I didn’t and was sucking it. It’s been so long since I’d siphoned gas that I forgot about fumes honestly. With clear hose I figured I could suck until I saw liquid and then let it drain and by doing so not get it in my mouth, but forgot about the fumes and it sucked. I tried to do it like a straw where you suck without breathing in if that makes sense. It was hard to do and it stung a little. You obviously thought it out better than I did. 🤔

@Phatphatyo Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s my bad. If I’m being honest I actually had it going already when I thought- hey, I should film a little tutorial. So the materials I show were what I didn’t use. I’d already cut off my tubing that I needed and stuff. That being said, there’s no secret to inserting it. Just stab it in. You won’t do it wrong. The only thing I’ll say there is the tank is farther down than you’d think it is. Don’t short yourself tubing. With the hard outer tube, the inner slides right in and out. It won’t catch and you won’t do it wrong. Then when the inner soft tubing is slid out and you’re done, the hard outer tubing is hard and slick enough that it just pulls out as well. There’s resistance as the flaps are pushing on it but it’s not hard to do by any means. I don’t have many videos and I’m not a big name so if you comment a question I’ll see it. I don’t get many. I’ll try and reply.
@Phatphatyo Жыл бұрын
Oh also if you somehow don’t have enough to get through the catches I have a video on how to get a tube out. That’s saved peoples bacon when they didn’t know that there were rollover balls and anti-siphon valves and stuff in it. Or if you only put a gummy tube and not a hard one. That’s been done. You need two tubes or the soft one gets stuck and you’ll have a freak out moment thinking you ruined your truck, which may or may not be why I made that video. 😉
@Phatphatyo Жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind that 1/4 inch tubing like this takes FOREVER to do. Plan it out when you have time. I did 36 gal but it took all night. I went out every couple hours to change a 5 gal can out. I don’t remember the rate I got but it was close to 2 hours if I remember right to do 4.5 or 5 gal. SLOW. Maybe if you could park up on something higher it would draw faster. Or buy a pump. I didn’t use a pump. In fact I didn’t use a siphon bulb. I suck-started it and man I underestimated the fumes. Wow. Nasty tasting stuff and I never even got liquid in my mouth.

I don’t remember the video, don’t I walk from my garage to theirs back and forth to get things? Can’t remember. I think I walk next door a time or two. Anyway this process is slow. It takes like 8 hours to drain a big truck tank through 1/4 inch tubing. If you were stealing it you’d be faster to hook it to a pump or just drill a hole like everyone else does. That’s the only reason I won’t get a locking cap actually. I’d rather it get pumped out than have someone drill my tank and cause the damage. Thanks, Biden.

It took like 8 hours to do. Thieves drill a hole. Thanks for the accusations but this was meant to be educational. I’ve got other videos driving this truck; it doesn’t mean I broke into it and programmed a new key. It’s the neighbor that had just filled and got a call that his truck arrived. He was about to trade it in. Half of the gas went into my truck and half went into his pilot. He just couldn’t use it all.
