Are the 2 hidden bolts on a 230?

Do you have to pull the cam out to replace the cam gear? Or can you do it in place?

I've always done them removed from the engine but I suppose you could do it in place if you weren't planning on reusing the gears. They are matched gear sets so don't mix and match the 2 or they'll make a lot of noise or could break / wear teeth off.

A 2 jaw puller might work going in through the 2 big holes in the cam gear, otherwise it would have to be cut off very carefully as to not cause damage to the shaft. I would cut a couple of slits 180 degrees out from each other on the cam gear boss but stop about a 1\16" before the shaft. Then take a chisel and finish the break. To press the new gears back on, I would heat them up 1st by throwing them in boiling water, clean and oil the shafts, then use an aluminum drift as to not cause any damage to the gears, especially the cam gear. Don't forget to make sure your cam retaining plate is installed (if removed) and torqued beforehand! or you will have to do it all over again
