For those who are watching, you MUST put a clear coat down after painting. It is not optional. It is NOT way more expensive. THEN wet sand with 2000 and polish. You can never get a gloss match by trying to polish just the paint. 3-4 coats of clear coat and then wet sanding and polish and you can blend the gloss in perfectly. You can get a reasonable quality clear coat in a spray can. The rest of the video is correct. Thanks for this video.

Agreed. He should have hit the primer with 400 before laying color down and the clear coat protective layer is a must. When you sand with 2000, do you do yours by hand or what do you use?
@HaydenK199810 жыл бұрын
Trent Robertson You can just use the paper on its own or use a block, wouldn't use a orbital sander unless you have a lot of experience because you could end up through the clear coat or the base coat

So, you forgot to sand the primer and feather that. Then providing there isn't any dust/debris in the paint, You then you apply your clear. You then wet sand the clear and compound, then polish it for a flat, glossy surface.

I was going to ask the same question -- once the initial sanding of the filler is done and the primer is on, I've been led to understand that a wet sanding of primer is a good idea, then base coats with wet sanding between, then clear coat with a final wet sanding, then on to the rubbing compound, etc.. All the wet sanding really does is knock down the orange peel, which can make a big difference.
@14djfunk12 жыл бұрын
I detailed cars for a dealership and I agree that it's best to hand buff with the rubbing compound for the first few attempts. Orbital buffers are great time savers and can even take out small scratches in the clear coat, however, they're also the fastest way to take one step forward and two steps back. Something else that I'd never heard of before detailing was clay bars, which are kind of the intermediate between sandpaper and rubbing compound. Anyways, sweet series and keep it up!

Would this same fix work on a dent that was a little bit shallower, but way bigger (3x4in) in size still work? Or is this to big of a dent to fix with the bondo? Also when your were buffing the are out and the bondo were to come up would would be the best way to replace it? Put more bondo on top, or just peel it off and start over again? Thanks for your help.

depends if u put the right amount of hardner, wait for the bondo to dry, when dry dig you finger nails into the bondo. if the bondo starts peeling off really easy that means u used too much hardner and the bondo didnt have enough time to stick which means u have to star over again. if the bondo is having a hard time to peel off with ur nails then it means its good and ready to sand. everything else depends on applying coats of primer properly. i hope this helped you

Hi Ben, Very professional video but a few questions. I'm getting ready to fix a couple dents in my van and wondered: 1) Does the hardener come with the Bondo or do you buy that separately? 2) Would sanding the primer mean less elbow grease in buffing steps? 3) How much did all the materials cost (seems like you have close to $200 in materials and paint--same as what you'd spend at a body shop. 4) At the end of all that buffing, even with the shine, don't you still need clearcoat to seal everything? This van project will be my first attempt so am trying to make sure I do it right. Thanks for a response...will check back. And thanks for taking the time to provide the rest of us with a how-to video!

I thought this was well done, I will add the steps of wet sanding the primer, base coat and clear coat. Does the clear coat help to dull the new paint which is brighter against the old aged paint? Or is there a blending product out there?
@carlbs118 жыл бұрын
This was indeed a quick and dirty job. Wet sand the primer and use a tack cloth between steps. And if you really want a professional job, go the clear coat route. You can get paint mixed that they say has "clear coat in it", but it's not the same thing. Go to an auto parts store that specialized in paint supplies and they will tell you the sandpaper grits you need for each step and will have the tack cloth's ect that you need. They will also mix your paint can much cheaper than a dealer.

it'll never be right without a clearcoat. in fact a lot of paint match companies modify their clear coats to enhance their paints even and allow it to match correctly, but you need the clearcoat for the depth and shine. but at least it is a basic repair. this is also WHY a body shop charges a person so much for doing such things, there is way more to it really.....heh remember the days of uh oh better get makko and car shops painting your car for like $50, but you got what you paid for. Those days are gone though.
