Thanks for that - it let me fix three of my old chargers. Didn't know heat shrinking sleeves can stretch that much! I found chopsticks to be a great tool for the job - initially put thin ends of chopsticks inside tube from the opposite sides of the tube and then push them inside all they way until tube ends on the tick ends of sticks. Then just stretch it a bit more by crossing and flexing sticks and you get perfect size for MagSafe2.
5 жыл бұрын
Great to hear that! The chopsticks are the best! One of the previous game-changing comment may help with this demanding workflow: "There are shrinking tubes with 3:1 and 4:1 shrinking ratio, not only 2:1. Something like 12/3 would require four times less efforts to pull Magsafe2 through".

LONG NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS work the BEST! Insert the head of the pliers into the tube and then open the pliers. The handles of the pliers give you the leverage and control you need to stretch the tube without breaking/tearing. I can stretch a tube in about 30 secs with the needle nose pliers versus other methods.

This works great. You can get the heat shrink tubing at Home Depot in different sizes, very inexpensive. I used a pair of scissors to stretch the tubing. With the scissors closed, work the tubing onto the blades. Then slowly open the scissors to stretch the tubing. Keep working it, turning the tubing around from time to time, stretching it until it fits over the magsafe end.

Fixed my cable today. Thanks for the video and thanks for those who made useful comments. Here are some points I think should be highlighted: 1. the heat shrink tube can be greatly stretched, in my case, 6mm diameter -> ~15mm 2. long nose plier is really useful to stretch the tube. 3. The quickest way I found is: insert two thin metal bars (e.g. hex key) into the tube, cross them and make a "X" as far as you can, and then continue with the lone nose plier with some effort but steady. There is a threshold and once you reach it, you will feel the tube somehow losing its flexibility and cannot shrink back (but it will when heated later) It should take only 1~2 minutes if you are doing it properly. 4. if you don’t have heat gun, your wife’s scented candle will work as well - just hold the tube several centimeters above the flame for a while, and make sure vent after the work so she will not notice it, or you probably have to pay more than a heat gun…

@@achis9734 Yes, a lighter works also. Just be very careful, esp. with white heatshrink tube. It easily gets burned, soot builds up or the material starts bubbling if the flame gets too close. In my experience, a heat gun worked way better than any flame.

Thank you for the idea... I've done this today to fix my magsafe. I use 5mm heatshrink tube. I found that stretching it using long nose pliers can be much faster. Lesson learnt: Just be careful while cutting your tube using sharp scissors, you must avoid tearing the sides because the tear will grow bigger and damage the tube while stretching.
5 жыл бұрын
Longnose pliers are the most effective tool for that job! 100%! Shrinking tube in diameter of 5mm is fine. There are two different types of tubes, low and high quality. The high-quality heat shrinking tubes are easier to stretch (even with chopsticks). The low-quality ones are made with the kinda shiny material/plastic. The better quality tubes are matt (they look and feel similar to the new Apple cords). The high-quality tubes are more expensive, and hard to find, but worth it! There are also tubing with adhesive (more expensive than regular). I need to test those tubes with a layer of adhesive!
@mfauzilkamil
@mfauzilkamil 5 жыл бұрын
I noticed that it is moving if pulled. So, I wrap springs from used ballpens on both connector cable and box cable to strengthen them. I think sewing threads will also works. I've made a second layer of heatshrink tube on it. When the tube shrunken, it will grip the spring tight and will not move. I don't think i need any adhesive since it won't move anymore when pulled.

Great video! Two questions: (1) Why not use a 3:1 ratio tube? (2) How about using a shrinking tube with an adhesive? It would create a much more secure seal that's waterproof.
2 жыл бұрын
3:1 and adhesive one are more effective but relatively expensive and hard to buy in some regions. If the availability is not a problem, 3:1 adhesive tubing is a better option

@ One word: Amazon.
@el_micha
@el_micha Жыл бұрын
A 3:1 or if available even 4:1 ratio would be much better. Trying Amazon's heatshrink with adhesive, I found as it shrunk it got quite hard/unflexible. I can't tell if it is the adhesive that hardens or the fact there's not the slightest slip of cable within heatshrink anymore. So the heatshrink area is very stiff, while the bare cable after is very flexible. So there's a hard break between hard/soft instead of a desired transition gently absorbing the bending forces. With an iPhone charger cable I found after a few weeks there was the wire started to break again right after the heatshrink part. So beware of the adhesive variant!

This issue is unbelievable! 100% agree! Based on my experience, it is really important to use fresh/new tubing. The older ones are harder to stretch. I know its hard to recognize new tubing. That's why I ordered the same tubing from different sellers. This stuff is cheap, so it's not a big problem.

Thats a great repair method that I have never seen or though of before in many years in electronics. Well Done. BTW never attempt to fix these cables by splitting the transformer its too time consuming and may well damage it. If you need to join the cable in the middle solder the conductors after sliding thin heat shrink over then then heat shrink. Its even better if a larger heat shrink is brought down over the others.

Thank you! I must tell you that some time ago I discovered heat shrinking tubing with adhesive. This invention is a game changer! With wider MagSafe plug and stretching it's not so good solution, but with rounded MagSafe plug and iDevices cords make miracles.

thank you so much for this awesome, very good looking, very tasteful music :) I have never done such thing before but I am very excited to try ns safe the day. What kind ok tube should I buy (and where can I find this?) if i have the easier version of the magsafe adapter, the cylindrical looking one (roughly 1cm wide). Thank you so much, love your work !
6 жыл бұрын
Visit local hardware store, they probably help you. Or buy online. The heat shrinking tubes shrink something about twice. We need 3 mm tube after heating. Why? The MagSafe cord diameter is 3mm as you can see at 0:10. I use 4.8mm shrinking to 2.4mm because I wanna to wrap the cord as much as possible. Also, the 4.8mm tubing can hold stretching to MagSafe plug size (this flat and bigger one). You may use tubing up to 6mm, but 4.8mm is the best way to make this repair, at least in my opinion. Shrinking Tubes are cheap, so feel free to experiment with sizes. And let me know how your repair went.

Hi! I loved your video! I live in Norway and they don’t sell those tubes and that Black tape here. I’m not allowed to buy stuff online. Is there anything else i can use like drinking straks or something?

Drinking straws are made for cold drinks, not for electricity. Also they are not shrinking as heat shrinking tubes. I believe that in Norway must be somewhere store for electrician. Ask some of your friends or elder people, and let me know about your research.

Hi Sir, I saw your this KZbin video regarding repairing Apple MagSafe Power adapater. This is excellent learning! Recently, my MacBook Pro's adapter (85W) stopped working after a spark while plugging in. I have successfully opened it. However, I'm unable to see any 'fuse' kind of component inside. Can you please help me what should I check so that I can try to fix the issue? Thanks for your guidance, Sir.

+Jaeo Naver this repair is difficult. Be patient, take your time. Watch +Francesco Ferretti video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoK7q5yCqdeJp7s Francesco explains how to replace the fuse. Remember that safety is a priority. You have everything to do precisely to avoid self-ignition device when you use it.

That's how I fix them but I add another step for a bit more reliability: After you slide on the heat shrink tube, slide it back from the break and brush on a little liquid tape. Then slide on the heat shrink tube and and apply the heat. Doing this adds strength and prevents the tub from slipping off.

Hi, Is it possible to cut a slit along the tube, and then wrap it around the cable and shrink it, then use another tube the same way, but overlap the slit from the first tube? Would this be easier than spending ages making the tube bigger? I don't have the same patience. lol.
6 жыл бұрын
Cutting a slit along the tube won't work. Shrinking tube is made of elastic material, so when you heat up tube it will create a gap and fall apart. Be patient my friend ;)

It may be caused by low-quality of the shrinking tube or the age of it (older one are harder to stretch without split open). Try new one or be patient and stretch the tube slower than before.

I've an issue with my plug guess I think it's short bcz whenever I plug-in the charger the plug (attaching to the Mac) gets extremely hot within seconds Can you tell how to open that plug and correct the wires
@el_micha
@el_micha Жыл бұрын
My MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2015 always tends to get hot, esp. if the device is used at the same time as charging it. This is the most stress you can put on the power supply since it needs to put out a significantly higher amperage than when just charging and not using the laptop. So since the aluminum body of the Macbooks is designed to act as a heat sink, it is normal it gets quite hot near the charging port. That aside, try to borrow another charger to see if the same symptoms are showing. If not, then your charger should be defective. There is a tutorial on the website iFixit how to cut off a damaged part of the cable and re-solder the inner wires to the plug. It is not too easy tho and requires quite some skill. Good luck either way, my friend!
