This is exactly what I've been looking for. Most videos are either pro's in a shop with spray booths or hacks doing a terrible job. This is the perfect video, I'm an amateur detailer (on my own cars) and know what I'm doing, but obviously no spray booth. So doing a bumper rash on my car the right way is appealing. Thanks again. Good content.

Hi Zain, good work! If you're still learning, just keep at it and itll all start to fall into place eventually. When learning paint and body it can be useful to buy some old / damaged panels to practice on so you're not risking any further damage to yours or your customer's cars!

What do you think of Spot Blender aerosol? You spray it at the end to 'melt-in' overspray and blend in the very thin edge of the new clearcoat at the edge where it joins the original clearcoat so it doesn't peel again after a year or so.

Thanks great help and informative. I noticed that you did not apply any primer first is this not necessary on a plastic bumper?
@JohnnyGetsCash
@JohnnyGetsCash 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, tha ks for your comment. I didn't apply primer here as there was only a very small area that didn't have colour (where the scratches had been filled) so I tend to go straight in with colour in these cases. This is advantageous on a fade out job such as this because if I had used primer, at the sanding stage I would be fighting a receding line of grey as I sand back the new colour coat. Cheers!

You don't need to sand the bumper right down, but a light 'scuff' to key up the surrounding area is necessary!

Hi Johnny, great job! In your video you mentioned using an aerosol paint in the correct manufacturer colour. How do you find exactly the right shade? I imagine black paint is easy enough to get right, but in some of your videos you tackle very particular shades and metallics, and get the colour spot on every time. How do you ensure you have the right stuff? Thank mate
@JohnnyGetsCash
@JohnnyGetsCash 11 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! Whenever I’m doing aerosol repairs (as opposed to gun work), I mainly use the same supplier (who I trust to get the coded colours correct) - a company called Paints4U. Admittedly sometimes the shade can be slightly off but then it comes down to the skill of fading out across a panel 👍

@@JohnnyGetsCash Thanks so much for the response! If I may pick your brain a little more as I'm quite inspired - how do you go about finding such good deals on cars? Do you avoid used car dealers and stick to auctions and private sales? And what do you look for in terms of condition, mileage etc. to ensure you're getting a feasible project car? Thanks again for the great content and response! 🙏

Really helpful video, it’s encouraged me to tackle a rear wheel arch! Can I ask, is the heat gun necessary/what’s the benefit? I don’t have one and I’m wondering does it make it quicker or help the paint to blend because it’s warmer? Or something completely different?
@JohnnyGetsCash
@JohnnyGetsCash 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thanks for your question. The heat gun is quite important as it warms the work piece and helps the paint to apply evenly. Also, when applying clear coat it helps to prevent blooming (a cloudy / milky looking effect within the clear caused by excess moisture in the air / too lower temperature at application stage). You can get away without using a heat gun if working in the warmer months, or if you use an infrared heat lamp instead. My preference is with a heat gun though as it allows me complete control over the panel warmth etc. I hope that helps a little! Cheers

@@2007ACE2007 Did something similar to this on the same model car (albeit silver) and had to use a heat gun, just be careful not to cook the paint and keep some distance with the heat gun and keep the gun moving left and right! lol... had to re-do one spot twice because of user error although it was a bad time to spray in the cold, and I don't have much experience with spray painting it did come out alright after a little buffing with the machine polisher.

Hello, did you end up with any noticeable transition line near the center front? If I had 2 small damage spots on opposite ends of a plastic rear bumper cover, would that require painting entire bumper since the gap/joint is about 2 feet away from the damage? Thanks
@JohnnyGetsCash
@JohnnyGetsCash Жыл бұрын
No transition as I painted to the natural gap between the arch / bumper and the rear apron / bumper. Towards the top I only painted up to the natural ‘shoulder’ of the rear bumper and lost the new paint into the ridge so it’d be totally invisible 👍

@@JohnnyGetsCash I sprayed duplicolor base and clear on half of Corolla bumper cover. I ended up with that side not as shiny as the factory finish side .. should I scuff everything with wet sand 2000 and reclear entire bumper with 2 k clear? Or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@JohnnyGetsCash
@JohnnyGetsCash Жыл бұрын
@@flipper2473 I guess that the ‘proper’ way to do it would be to re-do the entire bumper, how’re I have had quite a lot of success blending clear in the past by blending the new clear into the prepared / finely scuffed old clear, then when the new clear has thoroughly hardened scuff up (or ‘key’) the surface with a fine W&D paper like 1200g then machine polish the entire panel / part. This generally allows me to make the whole part a uniform level of gloss. Hope that helps.
@flipper2473
@flipper2473 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyGetsCash thank you, so , with that information, tell me if this plan has any flaws. I will wet sand the half of bumper that originally did not come out shiny with the 1k clear coat, wet sand 5 inches over into good factory finish (narrow part center of rear bumper). Then spray 2k clear over bad half and over the 5 inches of sanded good side. Should I spray a blender on area of untouched good factory area line where it meets the scuffed good 5 inch area or simply rely on polishing to blend? Thanks so much.

Nice job! Why not use primer before paint?
@JohnnyGetsCash
@JohnnyGetsCash 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, thanks for the question. When repairing areas on plastic bodywork such as this (as opposed to metal panels) i sometimes don't opt for primer. In this instance (being a flush repair after the filler), any primer would've been lost at the flatting stage so it was acceptable to go straight in with paint. When the unpainted areas are very small, such as the filler here, sinking is less of a concern also. I hope that has made some sense! Thanks for checking out my video!

Apply the paint with an airbrush. Don't use a heatgun, use a heat lamp which isn't too hot. Lay the last clear coat very rich, avoiding runs. No polishing needed.
