How to Repair Flickering or Ghosting Picture on Sony LCD TV KDL-46 46" and KDL-52 52" Fix

Same problem here. After watching this I gave a sharp tap to the top right of my 10 year old Sony Bravia 46W4500 and the problem resolved immediately. Minor flickering returned after a couple of minutes but it's emboldened me to take apart next weekend. In the meantime, TV is watchable.

Wow! I really liked the detailed way in which you explained this fix cause I have this same problem I took the back cover off of my Sony KDL-46 HX 729 thinking it was the T con board and was going to order the part and ON the order I saw an important warning message stating that if I had horizontal lines and flickering that it most likely is a damaged LCD screen panel now I will put back together but I'm wondering on how to take front panel off the plastic bezel off is it easy to take off thank you so much for your detailed information.

I would like to see how you placed the plastic corner tape before you put the frame of the screen back on.

Mine did the same. Sony KD-43X8000D APS-405 power board. I checked the circuit and found 3 Schottky diodes on on heat sink next to the APS-405 label, one of them was leaking between the anodes and cathodes. Replaced all three. Now TV is spiffy again. You do not need to replace the board for it. You can bye the diodes from any radio shack shop.

Those loose contacts can be heated up with a hair dryer and while it is hot then you push it down with a flat piece of plastic, not to hard though. It will fix the ghosting. The ribbons is attached with heat and a special glue is used to attach it.

I had the same problem with the KDL46XBR4. Actually, I bought it knowing the problem existed, because I'd learned about the relatively sure fire way to fix it. For $60 (TV in excellent condition, 1 owner) I took a chance, with success. Another detailed video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2nZk6BodqZ1aLs . A couple of tips: 1) After removing top metal bracket, reinstall the base supports & the base. This makes it easier to service it, AND put the front panel surround back on; worth the extra 10 mins. 2) Keep screws separated in egg carton slots & LABEL them. Why? Because there are many & you can end up forgetting where they go. I ended up with 2 extra screws! TV is fine, though. But yeah, would've been better to get all screws in.

ribbon connectors are always suspect..I spray with contact cleaner then connect and disconnect a few times..if you can find "cleaner with lubricant" that will last longer..

Thanks for the tip! I have the exact problem with my Sony Bravia KDL-40W4000. I've already tried to fix the problem with electric tape. It solved the issue for a week or two and then the ghosting image was back. Do you attach the edge protection tape to the inside of the metal frame or to the ribbon? Is the tape you use double sided all around?

+Lorenzo Del Real Hi, just be careful with the ribbons that connect to the LCD panel, since they are fragile. The most difficult part is to remove all the screws, since there are a lot of screws before you get to the metal bezel where the LCD ribbons are. Please like and subscribe! Thanks!

+Jack Reimer Hi, you do have to remove several screws from the back and front. After removing the back, you need to unscrew the plastic bezel that goes around the front of the screen. Then, you have to unscrew the metal frame that goes around the LCD panel.

All I had to do was essentially was squeeze the frame of the tv in the top right corner. I wasn't worried since its 10 years old now and I didn't care if I broke it or not

Thank you so much. I had a similar problem (only like a huge horizontal part of my screen was fucking about every 3 seconds) and all I did was apply some finger pressure on the frame (didn't even disassemble the screen) and poof. The problem was gone.

I like to use thermal pads for that like that it passes the heat from them little chips they get hot and over time lost contact with the ribbon wires.

So I tried to do what you said but hit a road block after taking out the back cover. The tv has this border panelling which I can't figure how to dismantle. Need help please. I love my tv. just ground the panel and it will work...your panel is charge, u just need to discharge it!

sometimes you just need to unplug the TV to discharge for a couple of hours before using it...proper grounding is the best solution to some flickering issue

Yea I broke the plastic frame trying to undo the clips. I thought I was close to getting to the ribbons but it's a 45 minute job minimum. It's too late.

This issue is caused by the lcd conectors that loose connection with the the actual lcd screen, and the false contact causes the flickering.

+Paluru Naresh it has a lot of screws, but all of them are on the back first, which will allow you to remove the plastic cover first.Once you remove the plastic cover, you will have access to the screws that hold the metal cover.

Thanks so much for the video. I see some people with questions about removing the panels. I came across this video but this seems REALLY involved. Mine is 52" - it's heavy and setting it down with the screen facing the ground makes me sort of nervous. Any other advice on getting to the ribbons would be appreciated! Thanks!

GREED is a terrible thing .
