For good reference, best way to use a tack cloth is to "poof" it all out like one of those shower washers (lufa?). Then when wiping the surface make very little contact to avoid transferring any bees wax into the surface. You'll be amazed at how much better it will perform. Fold it all up when you're done and if it isn't heavily soiled, you can use it again.

Then did paint repair similiar fashion also used body scratch filler on alot of bumper marks. Thank you so much for this great video - I've been watching a lot of KZbin videos on repairing scratched cars & have bought the products. Just waiting for a day that isn't too cold or windy. Your video was very easy to follow & answered a few doubts I had over some aspects of doing it myself. I was glad to see in your reply to one of the comments that you don't have to scuff up & paint the undamaged area as it didn't seem to be necessary to me - I'm not looking for perfection & will just be pleased if I can improve the appearance of our 11 year old car. Could you please advise if the result has that orange peel look is the only way to fix it by sanding, or would compound & polish be OK? I think I am scared of sanding as it seems to be "damaging" the car but I can see from your video that it works to remove imperfections & let you move on to the next step. Again, many thanks
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
Very light orange peel can be removed by just polishing. Heavier orange peel will be removed easier/faster if you wetsand, then polish. There are also more aggressive polishing compounds to start with, then follow up with finer compounds to remove the finer swirl marks.

Hi 6Th Gear Garage: I used Dupli-Color-Filler (and everything else on your list) but I didn't buy Dupli Lacquer Clear coat, instead I bought MAX 2K Clear Coat. BUT after I used the whole MAX 2k Clear Coat, the surface is so rough not shinny with polished look. The surface is so rough even touched with bare hand. DID I USE THE WRONG TYPE OF CLEAR COAT? (just added now: I peeled off the expiration sticker and found that I did not smash in the red cap on the bottom half - not activated! What a rookie mistake!) What can I do at this point, apply more MAX 2K with the correct activation? Or switch to Dupli Lacquer Clear coat? Or sand everything off, do it all over? I felt so sad, now... Please advise!
@6thGearGarage2 жыл бұрын
Spray Max 2k is a quality product. Not having activated it, I'm not sure if I would try to apply any more clear over top. I would wet sand it down smooth first. From there you could try applying more 2k, or keep sanding all the way through the rough clear, down to the color coat. Then you would need to apply more color before spraying the 2k clear. You may want to call Spray Max and see what they advise to do about clear applied that was not activated, if it is ok just to sand it smooth and re-apply or completely remove all the unactivated clear.

I saw guys do the same repair but scuff up the entire bumper and apply clear to the whole of the bumper (not just the damaged area). I think to feather it in? good practice or overkill?
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
I say overkill. Why paint the whole bumper if the damage is only in one area?
@michaelbinno37104 жыл бұрын
Video was great. My biggest question is how you feather the primer, paint, and clear coat on to the existing factory painted area? It looks like you’re just letting the overspray go onto those areas. Shouldn’t the primer overspray be sanded. I know the video says to sand beyond the area but your video makes it look like the overspray is hitting the bumper in the front of the car but you’re not sanding there. For the color match paint and clear coat, it seems like the overspray area in the front of the car won’t have the “wet” look like the main area where you’re working so how did you get those wet looking? Thanks.
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
You're correct, the color and clear overspray is extending onto the bumper outside of the repair area. Then when I went back with the polish, the overspray was either shined up enough to blend in with these areas, or in the cases where it was very light, it was removed all together when polishing. The Duplicolor paint is lacquer based, so it remains softer than the OEM urethane paint. That allows it to be polished away completely by the abrasives in the polish if I work in the same area long enough.
@agr_ Жыл бұрын
That was a great question, I noticed that too. I’m glad the polishing step takes care of this.

how long did it take you to do this whole project? And of course with the fender, what was the total cost? You did a fantastic job. Was there a difference between the original and new paint? I couldn't tell from far-away shots. Thank you
@6thGearGarage2 жыл бұрын
I did it over a weekend, but that was with filming. So it could probably be done in one day. I already had most of the materials, so I had around $50 in the color matched paint and fender. There was a slight difference in the paint. The fender looked slightly darker and the metallic flake was slightly larger. On a nicer vehicle that you plan on keeping, I would spend the extra money on a 2k clear. The finish will last a lot longer than the lacquer clear that I used. If you had to buy all the materials (sand paper, bondo, primers, degreaser etc.) & paint now, I think you would spend at least $100, without the cost of the fender.
@KylePouch3 жыл бұрын
How do you blend the old clear coat with the new clear coat applied… cuz I did this the other day with the door of my car… and I wet sand and polished the orange peel but I can still see the line where the old and new clear coat meet
@6thGearGarage3 жыл бұрын
I just faded it out when I sprayed it. It's hard to describe, but after I polished it it anded up being seamless. If you can see a line, I'm thinking you still need to wetsand the edge of the new clear until it is level with the factory paint, then polish.

Great video on repair. There is also a blend agent that will soften the existing clear allowing new and old to flow together, Spraymax 1k spot blender 3680093 for 2k top coats (which I prefer over the 1k). It's not really needed when the blend area wraps around and can be polished off as in the video, but it helps on blend areas occuring in the middle of flat panels. Details from Spraymax... Convenient aerosol blending solvent that provides seamless edge transitions for an invisible repair The SprayMax 1K Aerosol Spot Blender is a mix of solvents that smooths the alterations made at spot repairs to give you a remarkable result. The spray gun pattern of this aerosol can provide a seamless transition between the old lacquer and the new. The Aerosol Spot Blender is perfect for blending and spot repair of 2K clearcoats and 2K topcoats. @6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
Red or grey is fine. The paint will hide the color of the primer.
@btd-cf20002 жыл бұрын
Question now that you have benefit of hindsight - would you still have used regular body filler in the deep scratch, or would you have done a finer "glaze-type" polyester filler, or would you have gone with one of the urethane (2-part) repair compounds (like 3M 05887 as an example)? I believe each of those three options is more flexible (less likely to crack), in the order listed above. However, since you didn't remove your bumper (no major flexing during re-install), and it's a relatively small/short length scratch, it probably doesn't matter. Just curious about your thoughts now that the repair is ~3 years old. Thanks for an excellent video!
@6thGearGarage2 жыл бұрын
I can’t say for sure, as I sold the car a few years ago. I used the body filler because I already had it and I didn’t know about the more suitable products at the time. But I agree, the repair area was so small that it may not have made a difference.

Thanks for this great, detailed video! Question for you: I have some scrapes on both sides of my front bumper that I'd like to repair, but what would you do if the undamaged part of the bumper--the middle part--is less than pristine from having been subjected to over 200,00 miles of highway driving? No major damage but just lots of tiny rough spots and some tiny chips? It looks like I'll be buying a buffer so I could try to buff them out, but still, I wonder if the two sides will look pristine from the repair and the middle part will look different... Any thoughts on this? Thank you!!
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
If it’s full of chips, I would sand the entire bumper down and paint the whole thing instead of just painting the repaired areas.
@allenb41134 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearGarage Thanks for the reply! And if I may ask a follow-up question... When I sand the entire bumper down to smooth it out, should I apply body filler to all the little chips, as opposed to sanding the whole thing all the way down to plastic to ensure the surface is smooth and even? Thanks again!
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
Allen B it really depends on the depth of the chips. If they’re not too deep, you can get by with using filler primer and sanding it flush. Doing them all with body filler sounds tedious. It’s better not to go down to the bare plastic if you don’t have to because the factory primer is well bonded to the plastic bumper.

Shane-Jennifer Pollard no need to sand all the way down to the primer, just sand with 600 enough to completely scuff the color coat and add some more coats.
@shane-jenniferpollard59554 жыл бұрын
6th Gear Garage What if I already have clear on top of the color? Just sand with 600 and put the color on top of the clear and then put down more clear?
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
@@shane-jenniferpollard5955 In that case I would sand until through the clear coat and into the color coat before re-applying color in that area. Or you could just sand the surface of the clear and do full color and clear again.

Can you take this approach on a grill?
@6thGearGarage3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. A grill will experience more abrasives over time from driving on the road, being on the front of the car. For the clear coat I recommend a 2k clear. It’s more expensive but will hold up better.
@loyddinneen2294 Жыл бұрын
It is advised that you should let fresh paint breathe for a month or so so it can vent the vapors and fully cure. So no wax for that amount of time. I thought the video was great and well done.

How long did u wait before applying the first clear coat?

I let it sit over night but you only need to wait as long as the instructions on the can say for the paint that you use.

How do you buy color match paint?
@6thGearGarage3 жыл бұрын
It is available at most parts stores or on eBay/amazon. You’ll need to know your color code before buying.

Where do you get the duplicolor color match paint? Online it looks like they only have grey and black

Local parts stores usually have a decent selection, or can order the one you need. I've seen them on ebay as well.

when is a plastic fender or bumper too damaged to repair? My vehicle has a slight hole in the rear bumper. I looked up some rust repairs and I'm wondering if I can use a similar tactic of mesh and body filler to repair the hole and then sand and paint it.
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
I think the only downfall will be that the plastic bumper is flexible and the repair area will not be, which may cause the repaired area to crack where it meets the bumper. There is a repair called plastic welding that is ideal for this kind of repair. I've never tried it, but have seen it advertised by body repair shops.
@jonathanhansen52084 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearGarage thank you so much, I've been looking into it and found a plastic welder at home depot, its cheap but looks like it will do the job. Figure its a very small gash(maybe 1/3 of an inch) and I'm going to be sanding and painting over it anyway. Thank you for the direction and keep up the good work.

The video was great but seemed to gloss over the polishing part after the paint and clear coat. The polishing part is a science in of itself according to other videos. Is there a reason why you don’t use a microfiber buffer cloth? As for the polishing compound, there are many different types. Which do you recommend?
@6thGearGarage4 жыл бұрын
Michael Binno lacquer aerosol paint is softer than the oem urethane paint, so it doesn’t take much to polish it. I used a medium compound by meguiars. I could have gone back with a finer finishing compound to remove any fine swirl marks, but then the repair area would look better than the rest of the car. I’ve done a couple paint corrections on vehicles, but there are KZbinrs who can teach the polishing process a lot better than I can because they do it for a living. I learn a lot from AmmoNYC channel & highly recommend it to you 👍

Some videos say to wet sand primer and some don't. Why is that??
@6thGearGarage Жыл бұрын
Wet sanding makes more of a mess, but dry sanding is more likely to clog the paper. So it depends if you'd rather have less cleanup or go through more paper.
