How to replace a tailgate on a third gen 4Runner.
My wife's tailgate was rotten, and didn't work well anymore. This episode we replace it!

what size are the bolts in the top and sides? I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow and have to buy an extension for my cordless drill and that socket from the hardware store.

Do all the 1998-2002 rear hatchs fit? For example does a 1998 hatch fit a 2002 4runner?

96-98 was pre facelift and 99-02 are after. If you have an '02 truck and youre swapping with a pre-facelift rear hatch i believe itll fit but there are some changes in wiring that can cause some headaches. The closer the year the better i suppose

Would I have to switch the harness if it’s different? The one I had on the original was a blue box and the new tailgate I have it’s a orange box ?

Where did you buy the tailgate? My 4runner has the same tailgate that you put on, but it's all rusted and sometimes the trunk latch doesn't work.

If you have a Pick&Pull/U-Pull/LKQ type junk yard in your area, they run $60 to $70. Otherwise go to your local junk yard. Good luck.

Did your keyless entry stop working? I changed mine and it stopped working, i dont know if this is the culprit

SM Adventures This 4runner never had keyless entry.. But if I hit the unlock switch it does unlock.

Dirt Garage just an update, i got it fixed, the relay (orange box) located in the tailgate is responsible for the keyless entry as well, plugged my old one in and it works again 👍
