This video was really helpful. I was over my Uncle’s place at the Jersey Shore for vacation (bout an hour and a half away from home). Second day in, battery light kicks on. When my uncle got down, I used the rest of battery to get it to the nearest auto zone. Got a new battery and alternator, used the battery to get back then we spent 4 hours replacing the alternator, and your video help us figure it out!

If your battery is dead and you need to open the rear hatch then you can hook up a charger or jumper cables under the hood. Use the stud at the front passenger side of the fuse box (on driver's side of engine bay) for positive, and a strut stud/nut for ground.

Yup. Found out by trial and error. Had one of those small Costco jump starters and it did the trick.

Thank you for the tip on the tool! I'm not sure how I would have done this without it.

Just for you guys that don't have the special tool. Go under the car with a bottle jack. Place it under the tensioner as close as you can. Run a 2x4 up to the tensioner and jack. Lift up the tensioner with the jack and bam it's the same thing as using a wrench but even better bcuz it holds the belt to the pulley.

I had an issue with that too lol I just took the top 2 bolts out put bottom bolt in and loosened it a couple turns wrapped an old ratchet strap around the belt and pulled it up over the alternator pulley put the top 2 bolts back in and cut the ratchet strap all done no Jack no taking apart the wheel well I did remove the reservoir to access the electrical abit better but that's it

Thank you for the video. I need to replace the alternator on my 07 HHR. Going to do the belt too, just hit 190K

Yes . That little low profile tool or wrench is a must for sure. Seems the norm with most vehicles today though not much clearance to get to things. Best of luck on yours and thank you for watching.

Thank you so much. My panel is showing "low voltage but the battery is new. I don't think the alternator is working properly (224000 miles) the original from 2006. So I'm going to follow every single step from your tutorial. Thanks again.

Thank your for the great feedback. This replacement is quite easy with the hardest part being the belt removal. You either need the thin tensioner tool or the thin profile ratchet like used , which i think is easier . Best of luck on yours and thank you for watching

@@s33therfan - hey i did this swap today with a buddy. I did purchase the low-profile ratchet. Didn't need it. Used a small piece of wood on a small floor jack and just pushed up on the tensioner...kept it in place while we swapped the alternator. We also didn't have to detach the hood lift. The most difficult part was getting that darn bolt at the bottom of the alternator to screw back in. Thanks again, your video was quite helpful and I will be keeping that ratchet for other uses!

Thanks for sharing , thats whats great about the sharing of ideas theres always another way . You will not be disappointed in the ratchet its really helped me with some binds reaching hard to get O2 sensors etc . Its became one of my favorite tools. Great job and thanks again.

Thanks for the vid. I'll be doing this later this week.Bnew larger battery installed. In 2 days shows 10.66 or 11 and car will.not start. Hook batt charger up under hood cranks right off and get like 13.6v uo to 14.5. Must be an issue with internal rectifier possibly or regulator. Hhr has 217k. Runs good. Alt I have no idea it's a 2008 2.4l. Will update once completed. I'll deff get that ratchet. Belt and pump changed out about 5k ago and radiator fan and few other parts of course.

Stop soon as it shifts in 3rd hope not transmission think it's electronic this probably a scary 400 repair plus alternator cost at a shop 500? Hope this doesn't go out while I have hhr 08?
@s33therfan Жыл бұрын
You might replace the coil packs , I had a similar issue and could swore it was the transmission. Thank you for the feedback.
