How to replace a Daytime Running Light MK8 Ford Fiesta

Here’s a short video showing how to replace the LED daytime running lights DRL on a MK8 Ford Fiesta. This is an example of replacement like-for-like OEM parts
This example is a 2018 ST-Line but the lights are the same throughout the model range.
You’ll need part number ST5872H
A flat headed screwdriver
A T30 and T20 torque bit
This is a DIY job taking around 5-6mins to complete.

Hi there - this is brilliant! I’m an ADI up in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙌. I have a white MK8 Fiesta as well and the exact same headlight has a dull drl. I was told I would need to replace the whole headlight unit and to do it I would need to take the bumper off 🤷‍♂️. This has been SO helpful and informative. Thanks for taking the time to post. You’re welcome. Before you change the light unit check that the optic lens which runs around the light hasn’t been burned by the LED. These can be fixed by drilling the burnt part out. Not perfect but helps restore some of the brightness.

Hello, thanks for the kind feedback. Just a quick word of advice, before changing the led unit, check the headlight optic for burn marks. The lights may be working but it could be the burnt plastic that makes it look dull.

Is there a way of fixing the burn marks ?

@@cleethorpesparrotman depends on the extent of the burn. It’s not a perfect fix but I used a small drill bit on a dremel tool and carefully drilled the burnt plastic out. This allow ‘cleaner’ light to pass through but it’s not like new. To prevent future damage I put a thin washer on each bolt between headlight unit and the led unit. This lifts it away from the plastic.

I’m glad it’s helped. Such a common fault. I’ve recently seen a 70 plate Puma with its daytime running light out. Check out the lens for burn marks. They can be lightly drilled out to improve the passage of light, but it’s never like new.

What led does it mount? Smd of what kind? Wouldn't it be cheaper to desolder the ruined LEDs and install new ones?

I have put autobeam led turn signals in my headlights. The part of the Drl strip that is close to the led bulb has turned yellow. The rest of the drl is bright white. Do you know if there is a fix for that?

I caught mine before it was too bad. It had two little burn marks from touching the LED. I used a small drill bit to drill out the burnt plastic. It wasn’t perfect but did brighten up the drl. As far as I can tell there is no replacement parts other than replacing the whole headlight. Obviously, expensive and annoying. If your vehicle is in warranty, speak to the main dealership.

After removing screws, does the headlight unit come out easy enough, I hear some people struggle getting it to click out?

I'm also an ADI I had to do this last year and work it all out myself... I had to replace module on one side and the whole unit (from breakers) on the other as the LED had melted to DRL reflector... So annoying

It appears to be a very common problem. Even Minis are suffering the same problem. I’ve put spacers between the LED and optic in an attempt to prevent the issue.

Is it the LED that’s burnt or the optical lens it shines through that’s burnt? I’m not an expert but if it’s the LED I’d recommend replacing the part as shown in the video

@@Studidit appreciate the super quick response. Iv replaced the part as shown in the video. Got it from eBay. But it didn’t work. Thought it was a faulty part. But then got another from eBay and still same, hasn’t worked and the part now looks like it’s been burnt out. So I guess something is burning it out immediately?

Before you buy the part, check if the led has burnt the optic it’s supposed to be lighting up. It may have burn marks on that you can clean off and improve the quality of the light.

Yes, but that costs x5 what it cost to do this.
