These videos (and this overall formatting) is absolutely incredible. Cutting the back out of that tank was an awesome idea. I'm a student living in one of those overpriced housing complexes where "everything's included" and my toilet's been running for a little while (about every 5-10 min or so; you can hear the drips leading up to the sudden rush of water). The maintenance guy's a schmuck who doesn't know a socket from a screwdriver, so I repair virtually everything that goes wrong in the apartment myself (besides HVAC work involving anything more than condensate pan clearing and filter swaps). I just don't trust the guy to not make an absolute mess of the place. Anyways, this video helped me not only fix the issue, but it also broke-down the process of how these systems work on a level that, as an engineering student, I found really interesting. Thanks for the quality content. You really know your stuff AND seem to genuinely enjoy teaching people about it! Subbed!

You need to have a conversation with your landlord. As a tenant, you deserve to have repairs made in a timely manner. Don't let landlord attitude keep you from asking for what you need. I am a landlady, and when they call, I'm on it the same day. Getting my rent and keeping my tenants is my priority, plus not relying on a tenant to try to fix what I am supposed to fix, with the result being they could do more damage by not doing it right, or the problem may be bigger than what the tenant thinks it is. Fixes need to be done right, and related issues need to be identified and fixed too.

After watching your video, I was able to determine the cause of the problem and replaced the toilet fill value at a cost of just under $7.00. I am so happy that I found this video. I’m a former soldier from the British military, then when I came out of the military, I went into the corporate world of banking and finance, and then I became a coach. I relocated from last year from Germany and took over my family house in the Caribbean, and both of my toilets were playing up with continuous running water, and the fill valve would not deactivate. I was panicking, thinking that this was going to be horrendously expensive to be repaired, and at worst, I may even need two new toilets. However, I found this video. I watched it and said to myself, “that’s too complicated for me I would never be able to do that”. Two days later, I thought “what could go wrong”? So step-by-step, I followed your instructions and hey presto, I have two perfectly functioning toilets, flushing better than ever. Thank you so much for your guidance, please continue making videos giving such a value and I will make sure I share this on my corporate page.

Great video. You covered every possible solution for a tank that continues to run. I never replace the bottom portion of the fill valve assembly that is attached to the toilet with that nut underneath. I leave the bottom part attached to the toilet bowl and only replace the upper portion from the new valve assembly kit. You simply need to move that slip ring to get it the top part to release from the bottom part. The slip ring is what allows for changing the height adjustment on the valve. That way, I don’t need any tools, and I do not have to drain all the water out. I used to do the way you showed, until I realized that bottom portion does not wear out, nor does it ever clog up, and the dimensions for it has not been changed over the years, as long as you get the same version of fill valve for replacement. Chlorine is what eventually deteriorates the flapper. I changed out several toilets in 2017 to the one piece dual flush type from Home Depot. They use a tower with a circular flapper that last about five years. They are easy to replace, and no tools are needed. There are two sizes of towers, and both sizes come in the flapper replacement package. I really like the slow closing FluidMaster fill valve, because you do not have to worry about water hammer. Some of the older type fill valves shut the water off fast enough to create water hammer.

I don't know why I doubted you but you have once again taught me something new and saved me great frustration! Had a plumber out earlier today and they had to remove the toilet. Turns out the gel they use in the bowl to solidify the water hadn't been completely flushed through the system. It was gunking up the flapper so it was stuck in the up position. Quick rinse with warm water and it's working fine again. And my fill and diaphragm valves got cleaned and looked over. Thanks!

I recently changed toilets and it was a whole ordeal which started with having to repair the broken pipe in the crawlspace that brings water to the toilet. Afterwards, I finished installing the toilet but for the life of me I couldn't seem to get it to stop running. It kept filling up over the floater so high it would leak out of the handle. I lowered and raised the floater and made sure the flap closed correctly but nothing worked. Until I watch this video and became privy to the need for popping off the top to clean out any debris which could be stuck in there. And voilà!! It worked! Thank you for your video. I'll be coming to you for all of my plumbing issues from now on 😁

I watched another video on how to replace the diaphragm. It was a great video. I was able to change it, but after 3 tries, it still leaked. So I watched your video on how to change out the assembly & voila! No leak! You guys gave me the confidence I needed to attempt this fix! Thanks!

Thank you so much Sir! My valve was a little more complicated than lifting and turning to release it, but your video gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to proceed and figure it out. After the valve was removed, I found a small chunk of rust that was preventing it from sealing fully. Removed that, reinstalled, problem solved! I thought for sure I would have to go to the hardware store and hope that I bought the right replacement valve assembly. Not necessary now.

This was supremely helpful, thank you so much. I've been listening to the toilet run for over a week, delaying having to call the plumber due to low funds. Much gratitude.

Sir ...thank you so much...the longest part of the process was driving to Home Depot and finding the part. Probably 10 minutes of actual work.

Thank you!!! It was the flapper on mine. The replacement flapper in the new kit was too small so I just took out the original flapper, cleaned it and put it back in. No more running toilet!! 10 minutes. Thank you!

Loved your video. The way you explained everything was very easy to follow. You were so clear and precise with your instructions. I was just about to go and buy a new fill valve for my running toilet but decided to view your video first. I am so happy that I did. I took the time to check and clean the diaphragm in the flush valve as you instructed and put it everything back together. After I refilled the tank and flushed it, no more running water. I fixed the problem in less than 10 minutes. I am so happy and thankful that my toilet doesn't run anymore. Thank-you so much for taking the time to post the video and share this tip. Have a blessed day 🙂

Thank you, great explanation. My 70 year old galvanized leaves sediment, cleaning out that pin did the trick!

Thanks Roger! For someone who has a tenuous relationship with his man card, I found it very easy. Now it stops running after about a minute. I did your suggestions and also tightened up the chain by a couple links.

Great video! I am a lady that does a bit of property managing at a condo. One of the toilets was running, and as it turns out it was NOT just a simple adjustment of the screw that changes the water level nor was it the flapper or cruddy rim. Now, because of your video i know what to do next. I'm going to try cleaning out the diaphragm valve. You explained very nicely what to do if that doesn't work either, so I feel very prepared with my channel locks!

I know this video is a year old, but I gotta say, it has been so useful! Because of it I was able to diagnose a running issue and I knew how to replace the flush valve without a huge mess! Thanks man! You saved us time, money, and gave me some handiness cred!

Your "how to do" videos are the BEST...!! They helped me repair a severely neglected toilet, like 5+ years or more. Mineral build up could be measured in 1/8's and 1/4" thicknesses. I tried vinegar and lime away.... I think I could hear the toilet laughing at me. Those two products were useless.... like using a BB gun on an elephant. Went to local plumbing shop (which is closing after 45 years due to can't get good help) and bought a product called Professional Bowl Buster - 27% Hydrochloric acid (made in USA, San Antonio, TX). 32 oz. container. Poured about 24 oz down overflow tube to make sure main siphon jet at very bottom was fully submerged and let it soak for about 4 hours. Fantastic results with strong flushes now. Came back to your videos again to see how to properly adjust water level in bowl. All is good now...!!! THANK YOU...!

Hi Roger! My toilet is running, and after checking it out I realized when I push down on the fill valve float it stops running. I also noticed that water is leaking from the top of the diaphragm valve, but once I push down on the float it stops leaking. Would the fix be adjusting the float or do I need a replacement? Thank you in advanced!!!😊

You might take apart the top and clean the diaphragm but, I am thinking replacement... Sorry. Let me know if that works.
@keithchrysler37323 жыл бұрын
Cleaning the diaphragm can lead to a worse leak. Buy the entire valve assembly and you won't be sorry.

Wow! I came across your video because my toilet was leaking, I'm a widow and try to do things by myself if I can, my brother helps me out a lot but he's busy at work so I went ahead and bought the fill valve, but needed to know how to change it. I tried cleaning it first like you said and believe it or not there was a small black piece of plastic stuck in it. Cleaned it, put it back and it works just like new! Thank you so much for saving me some money,, now I can take the part back to Walmart. Great video.....

Thanks for the exceptional very helpful video. You inspire confidence and I appreciate that you are so very on the professional format, even going so far as to cut the back out of a toilet to make it easier to understand. Maximum points and a super job Master Plumber. We could use you in Florida! :)

THANK YOU. You saved me desperately needed money and stress relief from this detailed video. Water line constantly has dirt grains from city flushing lines that clogs flush valves. The city no longer gives warnings so we can shut off water to prevent dirt in lines. So now we constantly have to clean all lines, valves, etc every time they clean lines. If not pay plumber to REPLACE parts which I discovered only needed cleaning.

After totally taking apart my toilet I realized that the refilling sound was coming from my neighbors bathroom which shares a wall with mine. I'm debating whether or not I should go over and fix their toilet myself!
