Aww man your video is the best !! Just looked at your video 3 times and got it down pact enough to go change my bathroom fixtures out that a guy told me would take $80 to do!!! I took Extra precautions though I plugged in my fan in the wall socket, then put it on, then went to turn off the breaker to the entire room first.Lol did my connections and walllaa it worked!! ji jay! great question. Killing the wall switch will suffice as long as its not a 3 way switch, however if killing the breaker makes you feel more comfortable, then thats the way it should be done. thanks for the comment!

I fiddled w the same light fixture trying to figure out how to get it off the wall. Made me sweaty and mad- then I went to YT and found the trick that the chrome tubes (escutcheons) were really the clamps! Whoever designed that was smart but boy, it causes a lot of home owners to cuss mightily! Thanks SO much for your help!

Good video but i have a question. The old house I'm in now has an old vanity with a pull switch to operate the power so I can't control it from the wall. The new vanity doesn't work this way. What do I do? I can pull the switch to turn it off first but how do I turn it back on after it's connected?

hi david.. good question... You will have to put a switch in the wall.. basically you need to run wire( like 2 wire romex with ground) to the switch box and then another wire back to the light. In the switch box the black wires should each go into the switch and the whites would be wired together, basically you are installing a light switch to interrupt the power of the black wire. +Josh Barker Ive always found the switch to be sufficient. Some nut cases might tell you to do both, but i like to keep it interesting.

+Home Mender Inc ...Unless some idiot worked on it before you and put the switch inline with the neutral. Don't laugh, it happens. I've also see situations where other hot wires were routed through that same junction box and they were still hot. So better safe than sorry, best to turn off the circuit breaker and also double check with a non-contact AC voltage probe.

I just got a new condo and there is horrible lighting. Looks like we have: topaz 46" Linear - T5 High Efficiency Fluorescent Lamp ECO 3000K. Could I find something with reclaimed wood and industrial daylight* vanity bulbs to replace the fluorescent fixture? Or would the energy output not match? I’ve never seen worse lighting in the bathroom-there are SO many shadows (the tube fluorescent lighting is right above an extended/double mirrored medicine cabinet)- Everything is so yellow! :(

hey alexandra! ugh that sounds terrible...ideally you can change it with anything that is 110 ( common household light fixture) an remove the fluorescent..whoever thought that was a good idea?

hi silvia, some older houses only have a 2 wire system without the ground. If the box is metal, you can attach it to a screw thats connected to the box, if the box is plastic, you may need to wire the light with out it. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

hi laura, it might be something else tying in that box.. as long as you hook it up just like you found it, you should be good. If you're not confident, definitely consult an electrician!

so you basically twisted / wire nut the whites together, then the same with the black/hot wires, then put a wire nut on the ground, then recessed the wires out of the way put the face plate on, bulbs in, tested it and you were done? that was it pretty much? aside form that old ass wallpaper?

Where did you put the brown wire on the new fixture?

Raya M.C. Hi raya! Not sure I had a brown wire. Typically there is a light colored wire or white, a dark colored (black) and a copper wire or green wire. The dark is usually the hit with the white being the common the the other the ground wire. Sometimes it’s hard to tell between distinct colors in older houses. I hope this helps!

Mine in my unit is different, when I removed the old fixture, the copper wire was not hooked to anything. Is that normal?

Raya M.C. Hi raya! It sounds like a junction box where multiple lines come together. A good rule of thumb is to hook it back up just how you found it. Typically in light fixtures all wires are connected somewhere. Your yellow is probably a ground. You can attach it to the new fixture as well as the electrical box just like in the video. Electricians throughout the UK will be having a heart attack at this video! The wall switch you have in the bathroom is absolutely not allowed here and nobody in their right mind would trust their life to it being wired on the live side. Isolate at the distribution unit. Twisting wires together, are you really allowed to do that in the US(?). Other than that, do people put such naff lights anywhere in their house????
