This is a video I made at work replacing a passenger/right side axle on a 93 Toyota Corolla with a 1.8 liter 4 cyl and a 4 speed automatic transmission.
I am using air tools and a lift, which I understand is not readily available but the general purpose of this video is to show the basic steps in replacing an axle.
If you have any questions post a comment and I will answer it. Thanks for watching.

Legendary video! Most of these are guys with shaky cameras trying to talk and work, or guys using lifts and power tools without even acknowledging that most viewers will only have a subset of these tools. This was quick and to the point. Going to do this on my 99 Corolla. Unfortunately I live in Iowa so the bottom of my car won't be nearly that clean!

Enrique, I replaced my drivers side axle this morning probably 2 hours start to finish. Your tutorial is perfect for the DIY folks. I only have a brakeover bar and jack stands, but everything came apart easy. I did take the wheel off and spray PB Blaster on the fasteners and let it set overnight. I'm sure that helped. Thank you for such an excellent tutorial. Helpful hint to others: watch the video several times and pay close attention to everything he does, that is key.

The axle itself is probably different. In my experience, few major parts are interchangeable between vehicles, especially if they are made for different markets . As for the procedure, I have never worked on a right hand drive Corolla but I can't imagine the procedure is too different. I use nearly the same techniques on most front wheel drive cars. It would have to be extreme play or the axle may be missing or misplaced reluctor wheel. Please give me as much information as possible as to the nature of the noise, under what conditions it occurs and if the axle itself is loose or has excessive play. Any other information you think may help would be appreciated. @Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 9 жыл бұрын
+Keith Gardner That does sound like a bad axle. What usually happens is the boot on the axle will tear and all of the grease will leak or fling out causing the joint to lack lubrication. Check your axles for torn boots and see if the area around the axle boot has grease on it. Usually when the boot tears grease goes on the suspension components and the engine and transmission.

transmission oil has to be changed after this, correct?
@Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 4 жыл бұрын
That depends. If it is a manual transmission about half of the transmission fluid will spill out when the axle is removed. This fluid must be replaced after the axle is installed. If it is an automatic transmission and the transmission is properly filled, little to no fluid should leak when removing the axle. It is a good idea to check your fluid level after the repair and fill it to the proper level. Thank you for your question, and thanks for watching.

Hi I have a 1993 Toyota corrolla. And today driving it it started making a grinding noise from underneath it. It doesn't do it in reverse. We turned tires full tilt and nothing from that. What do you think? Thank you
@Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 6 жыл бұрын
Although I am an experienced mechanic with many years of experience and specifically worked for Toyota for many years there is little to no chance that I will be able to accurately diagnose your vehicle via internet. The following is simply an educated guess from my experience and your description. If it does not go in reverse and is grinding in the forward gears and there is no obvious external damage, like broken axles or spindles or something on the drivetrain, then the transmission is likely bad. Possibly the problem is in the "differential" part of the transmission but that is just a guess. Sorry I could not be more help. Check your transmission fluid level to make sure it is not empty but if there is a grinding noise adding fluid will not help.
@beingsaveddaily6303
@beingsaveddaily6303 6 жыл бұрын
@@Enrique_Osorio Vehicle does go in reverse. Has no problem doing that. It doesn't make noise in reverse. Only when driving and only when it gets up to 30 miles hr does noise start. It seemed to be coming front right side front wheel. But took wheel off and everything seems intact. No leaks or oil. To me it sounds like dragging something under car! But when you look there nothing there.
@Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 6 жыл бұрын
If the noise occurs at 30 mph you will never hear it in reverse since your car will not go that fast in reverse so it may not be a forward gear issue only. Localized grinding or rubbing at constant speed could be a tire issue, even if nothing is obviously visible, you really need to know what you are looking for. Another common issue with that symptom is wheel bearing noise. Although there are tests for that, I do not think I can go into the necessary detail via internet to allow you to properly diagnose this. Please understand that your description of "grinding" or the "sound of something dragging" may mean something completely different to me. I may hear that noise and immediately realize that a wheel bearing or tire noise is absolutely NOT the cause of this due to the nature of the noise. I am afraid that if I give you the procedure to diagnose a wheel bearing issue you may end up replacing unnecessary parts because all I can give are guesses. There are things that mechanics look for when diagnosing a car and it requires you to be able to use your senses to look for the details that you need while ignoring everything else. When I say senses, that means feeling how to the car reacts through the steering wheel, pedals, the seat, listening to how the noise changes during different actions, such as accelerating, braking, or turning with a wide or tight radius. I am not saying that it is a difficult skill to learn, you can absolutely acquire these skills, but it requires practice and experience. The best advice I can give you is to take your vehicle to a trusted and skilled mechanic who can do the tests that I would do if I were diagnosing your vehicle. If you want to keep asking me questions please feel free to ask as many questions as you like, please be as specific as possible and ALWAYS USE JACK STANDS when supporting a vehicle. Look up "car fell on persons head" if you do not believe this is a necessary thing to do. As always thanks for your queries, I do genuinely enjoy giving people good advice as I think its better to know the full truth than half lies. Hope to hear from you again.

I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla, when I accelerate, sometimes there is a heavy click. when I took off the tires for a brake job, when you rotate the axle it shifts then smooths out spinning normally. my assumption is to replace both axles. would I be right?
@Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 9 жыл бұрын
+mamafaker50 Ideally you should replace both axles if the noise is coming from the axle itself. Make sure nothing else is rubbing such as the backing plate to the brake rotor or anything that might be hanging loose. The best thing to do is to safely jack up the car so both front wheels are off the ground. Take the wheels off and spin the rotor until you hear the clicking noise. Try to pin point the area where the noise is coming from either by ear of sometimes if you touch the area that is making the noise you will be able to feel it.
@krsd11

Enrique I have a ?, does the transmission oil have to be drained before so it wont leak when you pull out the axle?
@Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 6 жыл бұрын
That depends. In a manual transmission roughly 12 fluid ounces (350 millliters) of manual transmission fluid will come out of the axle hole once the axle is removed. I recommend draining the fluid before you start work. In an automatic transmission vehicle, such as the one depicted in the video, when the transmission fluid level is full and the axle is removed, only a small amount of automatic transmission fluid will drain out through the axle opening. If you would prefer none were to drain out you can drain out a small amount before you remove the axle. I personally never do I just let it drain from the axle hole and top up the transmission later. The reason you do not see any fluid draining from the transmission once I remove the axle is that the hydraulic lift that is supporting the car, is slightly lopsided which means the car was slightly leaning to the left, which was enough to prevent any fluid from draining out. Thank you for your question and thanks for watching!!!

That is true. I do a lot of work at people's houses and when I do axles I use a 3 foot breaker bar and make sure that the opposite wheel is on the ground. The times I forget to leave one wheel on the ground I have used an accelerator pedal depressor on the brake pedal, if there is still vacuum in the booster it works very well at holding the hub.

You do not have to drain it since it will drain when you remove the axle, just be sure to place a pan underneath to catch the oil. About 1 liter will drain out. If you want to avoid a mess then you can drain about a liter or more out and then no fluid will come out when you remove the axle.

How come no transmission fluid leaked out?
@Enrique_Osorio
@Enrique_Osorio 6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. Typically on cars that are automatic the level of the transmission fluid is slightly above the axle hole opening when the vehicle is off which means generally a little fluid does come out. If the transmission fluid level is low or the vehicle is tilted, it is not uncommon that no transmission fluid would come out. If this were a manual transmission vehicle then a quart or more would have leaked out. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching!!!
