I used this video and successfully replaced my valve. It took me forever to trouble shoot, and find the problem, and then find the correct replacement piece online. But once I got the part, I seached for 'how to change a water valve gasket on a hotpoint', and this was the second video that showed up. Thank you guys!

I'm not a person who can fix things. Nobody ever showed me how to do anything and I've owned my own house for 6 years and now things are starting to wear down. I've been without a washer for 6 months and finally had someone come and do a diagnostic. This is all I said I needed to do and he was going to come back and do it for 150 bucks. I'm going to try this out and hope I'm successful. You all made this look extremely easy. I hope I'm going to have as much success as you all. I'll comment to give you an update

The wire on the inlet valve is called the thermistor sensor and the easiest way is to replace it . Remove the back where the control knobs are located and it is a slide on clip . Remove the slide on clip and just throw away the old inlet valve with the thermistor . Get the new thermistor and slide it on the clip and the other end plugs into the inlet valve. I ordered my part from Dr Part . . Went to Appliance part store where I bought the inlet valve and they did not have it in stock and GE was backordered till April
