Thanks for the video. You've confirmed it's a pain in the arse getting the new board in when corners are involved! HEALTH & SAFETY - For other DIYers watching this video who are perhaps inexperienced with handling fibre cement board ... a few H&S suggestions: 1. If using a grinder for fibre cement board, use a suitable diamond disc. Otherwise it's going to create a lot of dust, containing fine silica particulate (hazardous when inhaled). 2. Alternatively, if long cuts are required, use a circular saw with a polycrystalline fibre cement blade. Ideally, buy board that's the same dimensions (i.e. sheet length, width, and thickness [typically 4.5mm]) as what you're replacing to minimise cuts required. 3. Wear a dust mask (again, best to avoid inhaling silica dust ... can lead to silicosis). 4. Wear safety glasses or (ideally) concealer safety goggles for eye protection from dust and other stuff (rodent droppings, fibreglass insulation dust, etc.) that's likely to come down from the soffit/eave cavity. 5. IMPORTANT: In New Zealand & Australia (can't speak for elsewhere) if the house was built any time up until around year 2000, make 100% certain the board you're replacing does not contain asbestos. Good luck.

As far as I know, Hardiflex panels contained asbestos until the early 80's. If those panels are indeed Hardiflex then, depending on when the house was built, I dread to think how contaminated your lungs and surrounding properties are. Even if that panel you're banging away at doesn't contain asbestos, I would not be just banging away with a hammer given that roof spaces are often a haven for rats and there may well be rat droppings and other contaminants that would just shower down on you and wind up in your eyes or get inhaled or swallowed. You should always wear eye protection and a good quality dust mask.

Probs need to test any of these boards for asbestos, especially in the older houses. Lots of these eaves boards used to contain asbestos. In which case you should never touch them, but get a qualified asbestos removal company involved.
@dennisperrie2 жыл бұрын
All good, I know they weren't asbestos, but yes a pretty valid comment especially as the house's get older.
@aussiesuperman54262 жыл бұрын
@@dennisperrie yeap, a lot of these weren’t pure asbestos boards, but contained asbestos fibers. Had mine tested a while back and sure enough - they contained asbestos fibers. Won’t be drilling or removing them myself for sure 😀

Age of house looks like mid 1970s to early 1980s, house looks like a prime candidate for asbestos. A nice thing to do would be to state that you'd had it tested for asbestos. Responsible even.

@@LordandGodofKZbin The relevant word there is approximate. There's also the possibility that builders or suppliers had stock of the old panels that they continued using. My house was built in 1983 and I have been told that I should assume that the eave panels do contain asbestos. Thankfully they're in good condition so no need to worry.

Forgot the downpipe hole, the measuring of that & making sure the smooth side is down has got me stuck before, also need to redo those rivets you drilled out. I've heard that it may be a LOT easier to remove the facing that holds the eaves in place, fit the eaves and then refit the facing- be interested to see how that goes...

Cement sheet screws alright for eaves or do u perfure clouts
@dennisperrie Жыл бұрын
If the timber is old I use screws and pre drill holes. The screws are able to be seen though so they have to be neat in spacing. Clouts are good to and tend to be less visible but in older wood or slightly rotted wood they can be a problem.

Is the eave sheet strong enough to hold a security camera or spotlight? or does the camera have to be mounted against the eave trimmer?
@dennisperrie Жыл бұрын
generally it is strong enough. i suppose it depends on the weight. there is wood that runs from the wall to the back of the fascia so if you can screw into or close to one of those that would work.
