I always respect anyone who confesses a mistake when they could have easily carried on with no one ever knowing. In this case it not only shows you're honest it also shows you really are interested in educating others as best you can which includes mistakes that are easy to make ad how to avoid them. I'm currently installing cam bearings in my LY6 so I appreciate the information. All the best.

Great video with good information, I’m rebuilding a lm7 5.3 now and installed cam bearings twice already with trouble.The first was with a universal cam bearing tool so I bought the Summit cam bearing installer and all went in great but had binding when installing original cam back in engine that showed no sign of wear or damage. Watching your video has convinced me to replace the cam with a new one! Thanks!

Excellent video, couple things i do different, remove the rear bearing first if i'm taking it off the stand and set the engine up vertically ( less bounce), and after two bearings installed trial fit the cam after each subsequent bearings installed, and don't lube the od of the bearings, but that could be debated to infinity.

That tool is probably the best cam bearing tool you can get for an LS. Its only real downfall is that it won’t work for any other engine. But if you do ANYTHING with LS engines, it is DEFINITELY worth getting.

That type cam bearing driver has been around for years, back in the 50s I worked in a local automotive machine shop and we had a cam bearing driver set made by Hub City that used slugs , the only problem is that you need a slug for each size cam bearing. I have installed thousands of sets of bearings with a tool like that, I have made my own set as I need them.

Do they call for oil between the outside of the bearing and the block. Wouldn't they need to go in dry as to not spin a bearing?

Great video but I am curious about your remarks at the end. What would have happened if you were reusing the original cam since it did not work with the new cam bearings? Did you ever find what caused the problem with the new cam bearings and the old cam?

Always have the line bore checked before installing new bearings to start with especially if it's still stock and your going aftermarket parts with no machine work on a stock block.

Great video, but definitely should not be putting lube behind the bearing surface. You would want lube on the inside of the bearing so your tool doesn't mar the bearing surface. Although, you can put a very small amount of Green loctite behind the bearing to make sure it doesn't spin....which your oil will help it do.

@@alexanderknight7793 Is it?! As you may, or may not, know Summit Racing produces a video series called "On All Cylinders". April of this year they released a video on this very topic. Here's a link www.onallcylinders.com/2020/04/21/engine-building-101-cam-bearings-install-on-ls-engine-video/ In the video they lube the cam bearings and were questioned about it in the comments. In their reply they said Dura-Bond and Clevite says to use lube. I can understand the thought process that concludes, lube between the block and bearing increases the possibility of spinning the bearing. I also understand the thought process that concludes, as hard as I had to pound on that tool to get that lubed bearing installed, it's NEVER going to spin. (Especially if the camshaft spins easily by hand when installed) Edit:In the same reply they also said to "never use something like anti-seize."

I’ve heard MANY say to NEVER use something like Loctite since it inhibits heat transfer from the bearing to the block.

My 3rd Bearing spun, I'm adding a cam, question is Does the block need to be machined and need an oversized cam bearing? I know it's all have to be measured, I'm looking for a rough guess with someone who's fixed spun bearings before.

Would it have been better to just have put the cam bearings in a cold freezer so the cold could contract it then used a heat gun to expand it once it was on? Just think hammering it in is iffy just a tad bit

I have buddies that build Lots of LS engines and do their own engine work in the offroad scene and when they are building they run the motor and sometimes end up changing the cam in the vehicle and try different cam they run it maybe a month later change and reconfigure the engine. Its actually pretty easy on ultra 4 stuff no radiator in the front and so on. Did you ever figure out what happened other then the cam being used. So did you attempt to test fit the old cam in the new bearing first? I wonder if one of the bearings was not perfect from the factory.
@HTMR

Not sure, maybe I installed one of the bearings crooked or nicked it. Regardless, cam should spin smoothly once done.

You’re right you do not lube the outside of the bearing that goes into the block. But you do lube what the cam contacts into the cam bearings. But the bearings installed into the block absolutely do not lube, that portion goes in dry and very clean. Other wise the rest of the video was spot on.

@@HTMR that’s a great way to spin a bearing. That’s dumb for you to encourage the in-correct way for install. Those go in dry and then lube the surface that actually has a rotating assembly. That part you’re explaining goes in dry. You and i both know that. Even in a build spec they specify do not do that. Ive built a lot of engines and that’s a great way to spin a bearing.

I'm trying to get a straight answer myself. Oil on aluminum blocks seems standard. I think on the iron blocks #2 and #3 bearings had spin issues so GM dealers and machine shops would use green or blue Loctite?
