how to replace Ford Escape Display module that goes dead in cold weather

My 2009 Ford Escape has started doing that as well as we have cold weather. Once the car warms up back to normal. Thanks for taking the time to post an excellent video explaining the issue and method for replacement. Seeing that all these modules are all manufactured the same I would not be considering a replacement unless it was a continuous failure in all temperature ranges.

Hey, Daryl! Thanks for the helpful video! I have 2 Mariners from 2008, that both had this problem: last month, I was at a self service salvage yard (for several other things), and looked at pulling out a display, but, I couldn't see an easy way (i.e. the *proper* way) to get it out, even though the gauge cluster was already out! And by then, time was running short, and I had already been on my feet in the yard for over 4 hours. Between your, and Chris' (at 'A Kids Perspective') videos, I saw this was well within my skill set! HOWEVER, I feel I should point out that it DOES matter (a little) what car you pull from: yesterday, I had an appointment pretty far out, but very near another salvage yard, and only ~5 miles out of my way; I checked their online inventory for Mariners, Escapes and Tributes: there were many, including 5 in the '08-'12 model years (although they were all Escapes), so I tossed my tool kit in the car, and after my meeting, was happy to see it was a sunny afternoon. The yard has an organized system with numbered sections and rows, so it helps find randomly distributed cars; Pulling them was pretty quick, but, not knowing if the unit would work, I actually pulled two, and got the cashier to agree to let me test one in my car, and switch with the one from 2007 at the counter, if the one from 2009 didn't work. But I feel people should know that there *IS* some model distinctiveness on this item. My knowledge of electronics is ~basic, so I can guess that there is probably an EPROM chip in there, but no clue if/how it can be 're-flashed'... BUT, regardless, the installed unit seems 'programmed' to display the model name of the car that it was originally installed in, so, now, in my Mariner, the display proclaims itself to be an "Escape"! I thought that was better than saying "Escape Hybrid"! Additionally, I imagine it might have some elements disabled for features of the deluxe trim packages: i.e., on the Premier trim package, there is a separate heat/AC control for the rear, and separate display elements on this module for the front vs rear temperatures. And also, an exterior temp' display... It is possible that they *would* light up if they were getting a signal, which they aren't going to get on my car, but also possible that it could be locked out...I just don't know. Thanks again for the helpful video! Now I have a clock, and can tune radio much easier!

I have a 08 Ford Escape the radio won't work and the display module just displays "Ford Escape". Ive already changed the fuses and no luck. Could changing this fix the issue?

I dont think so. The radio head is a separate thing. Mine still worked when the display was dead

I have 2010 escape, no. 14 fuse kept blowing, I researched and found videos on here, also put in cd and would play but no control, CD stuck inside..had to pull no 39 to get CD to stop.....long story short, I unplugged this radio display, no more blown fuses....radio and all works, just no display.......my 2 questions are, does the model number have to be exact match from ebay or salvage yard and I was also told the replacement head will have to be programmed to my car...my part no. Is 9L8T-19C116-AC

I've tried the fuses and pushing certain buttons to reset. I have a 2011 Ford escape hybrid I just purchased and it's not working 😢 I've watched your video and popped off the front so I know I can do it now I have to find a part locally which has been difficult so far. Thank you

In se michigan there are multiple escapes in every junk yard. This part should be under $20.

I have a 2009 Mariner with the same problem. My junkyard said there was a change for '09 and I needed to have the exact model # of the FDIM or it wouldn't be compatible but it looks exactly like the one you have for '08. I'm guessing the junkyard is incorrect?

Actually there are different versions depending on if you have the navigation screen, and or the 3 setup buttons to lower left of steering wheel.

@@darylturcott I don't believe I have navigation. The screen was not working when I bought it. The 3 buttons I have lower left of the steering wheel tell me the mileage I have left to empty, oil life, trip mileage, systems check, etc. I've had it for over a year and I hate not having the info display.

@@elizabethreisinger5681 It *IS* annoying, isn't it? I have '08 Mariner. I pulled a module from '09 Escape. Other than displaying "Ford Escape" when initially energized, that goes away, and it works fine. What I noticed is that one of my cars has the 'Amenities' package, which includes electronic compass, outside temperature sensor on display, as well as 5 CD player on display...other car doesn't have that, and those items did not light up when plugged into that vehicle. I am pretty sure that I pulled it from a vehicle that also had that stuff. It's possible that a module from a 'base' model might have those display elements locked out, I dont know for sure... If you have a model without these extra features, or the dual zone heat/AC, etc...any module will get you clock & radio info' up there.

It will be a big chore getting another, and replacing just the clear face: and any old one you get hold of will probably be scuffed up, as well. If there are no deep scratches, you could try just taking out the module and polishing the face. There are 4 pieces of fabric tape framing the display. This helps makes it a little harder for stuff to slip in between, but, I think, it's mainly there to prevent squeaking. Maybe cover with some cellophane tape when polishing, so it's doesn't get all clogged up. Once you get it looking 'ok', yoy might just try putting a layer of heavy, clear packing tape over it, to be shiny. (Wont cost much; take it right off if not good enough.) If the face us real cloudy, you'll get pretty blurry images coming through, so need some polishing.

@@peggysizemore4207 I simply scrubbed mine with an old washcloth and some white toothpaste; cleaned with alcohol, and made sure to lay on the clear tape smooth, and bubble free- abd then trim along the inside edge of the felt cloth 'frame', and the smooth down that last bit around the edge. It will probably only last a couple years, but pretty easy to clean & replace, and it is looking pretty good! Just one little cloudy spot I see, probably because I know it is there. Offhand, a slightly thicker film might look smoother & shinier, but, as it probably has a thicker layer of adhesive, not sure whether that is going to result in clearer view of characters, symbols & icons.
