Another way to check the pump is spray a little starting fluid in the throttle body...if it tries to start it’s a bad fuel pump as well! Thx for sharing and the tips!!

Using some ratchet straps under the tank And tied to the truck frame would help lift the tank high enough to get your jack safely under The tank Plus it acts as a safety Incase the tank slip off the jack while lifting or lowering it..

Excellent video! I followed your instructions to change out my pump this weekend. Perfect! The only thing I did different was to lower the tank, with a jack, onto two raised 2x4s that supported the front and back of the tank. This made it an easy one man job. Thanks again!

K Reese, you did a fantastic job with the video. I have a 2001 Super Crew, and have already had to replace the fuel pump 2.5 years ago and am having to do it again tomorrow. Probably should be using OEM parts, but not sure how much longer I am keeping it (292K miles on her already). I found that removing the bed is necessary and since the tank is under the extended part of the truck (rear seats), I have to drop the tank too. But, I only dropped the tank enough to roll it to the back of the truck (supported by two floor jacks), disconnect the lines and plug, replace the pump, and reinstall the tank. Takes two people, but it's fairly quick.

If you hear the fuel pump working and your filter seems ok. Do the fuel rail pressure test. If it acts like the pump is bad. Meaning just a trickle of fuel comes out of the test point.. But the pump comes on strong and hard. On Ford Trucks. I'm not sure all the years. But I know 04 and on. Has what they called a Fuel pressure driver module.Not sure how long they used it. Located back on the frame rail above the spare. It's not hard to find it has a electrical connection with a silver colored back this will probably be very ugly and oxidized and black plastic cover. It's held on by two screws or bolts. This is a design flaw. The silver but pitted with ugly white pits. Of the case is aluminum and when in contact with steel and especially in wet locations. The steel and Aluminum react. The Aluminum actually begins to oxidize to the point it rots..It will probably be so bad the metal has split if missing a chunk or two of the aluminum case. This of course exposed the printed circuit board to the elements. Causing soldier points to go bad if not eventually short it out. This will cause the very same low fuel pressure at the fuel rail. As this regulates the fuel pumps pressure output. You would think if EFI vehicles only needed a pump and a Throttle position sensor to tell the computer how much air and there fore fuel is needed. Without this thing. They would of left it be. Now they added a module that cost about as much as the blame pump itself. It's works fine boys. Ok let's add something in the system it never needed before. Yeah let's do that. Let's mount the electronic bastard way in the rear away from the rest of the fuel system. Oh you'll love this. Let's make it out of aluminum so it's what is called dissimilar metals that rot when in contact. Ohh Boy we got this 😄

@@KReesethebeast Iv come to the conclusion my buddies.01 F150s Fuel pump sock may be clogged. The fuel pump comes on and sounds strong. It will start and while still in park. You can Run the RPMs up as high as you like. No sputtering nothing. Put it in gear and the power falls so low it will stall if you keep pedal to it. It doesn't have the FPD module. I changed the Filter. The engine was just swapped in after the Triton went out. It's now a standard 4.6L taken from a doner F150. After the filter the same problem. It felt like a vacuum leak. The TPS has one of those runner 90% PCV hoses that is split and what looks like a Brake Booster hose off the top most of the intake. Was split and actually collapsed on itself. I'm going to replace these tomorrow. But if it doesn't respond. I'll have to drop the take. Even with the pump working The truck sat. Idk how long. I don't smell varnish. But it doesn't mean the tank hasn't got thick sludge. My buddy who I told to make sure he grabbed a couple gas cans and put ten to fifteen gallons in it before driving it home. Of course he didn't listen and drive it with the hand below E to the station. So that sock probably sucked God knows what into it's mesh. He then put ten bucks in it I told him he should of put more. ten bucks isn't much I'm that long tank. Anyhow I'll do the pressure rail test. I told him to be ready to get a pump. He said but it's working. I told him true but it's sat. If I need to drop the tank just to replace the sock. I promised him that pump would probably crap out soon. The milage on its Odometer it 400K. So while the tanks down. Go ahead and buy basically it's the same one you bought. I just helped my Bro in-law put one from them in their Escalade. That life time warranty though a bit more money is worth it. So I'm gonna hate the next few days. Fortunately I have access to a.couple of floor jacks. The tank doesn't have the shield. Least I didn't notice it. Oh those Fuel line connectors. If you don't have the wrench. One can cut a sharpie marker lid down and split it to fit over the line. It was a bit of a hassle but it worked. The Plastic kit I had bought didn't last very long. Have a Good one Brother

how can i just test the voltage to the pump to make sure its not electrical ? how much was the pump ?
@KReesethebeast

A good way to do that is to just run a jump wire from the battery directly to the pump that way you know the pump is good or bad, or you can put a meter on the pump and check the voltage. I think the pump was between 100 and 250 bucks maybe.

Hey thanks for the vid, getting ready to do just this. Another thing, however, you should add is that apparently on these high mileage fords it is common that the inertia cut off switch trips or goes bad sometimes. It has been common to replace the fuel pump when in reality a push of the button or hot-wiring would have fixed the prob. It didn't work on mine, so I guess I have to fire up my 350 and head to town to get a fuel pump. I figure after 388, 000 miles it finally died.

You could test the relay or check the power at the pump. If you have power to the pump when you turn the ignition on and the pump isn't working, the pump is bad. It is most likely the pump that is bad, I am guessing the van has a good bit of miles on it and is older.

Another easy way to do this is to remove the bed of the truck. I think only 6 bolts hold it on. Unbolt the fuel filler (3 bolts), unplug all electrical connectors, three or four in total. Remove bed and then the fuel pump is fully exposed when you look on top of the gas tank. This saves you from having to drop the tank and pulling fuel lines, except for the obvious ones located at the fuel pump. But, either way you do it works just fine.

Hey K Reese, I think I may have to do this in the near future. I've been getting quotes for $700 to replace the fuel pump. I know what you're thinking. haha. Hell no! I might as well get a newer truck for that price to replace a fuel pump. I think I'm going to give it try. Great video!

You can take the bed off or drop the tank, I opted for the latter due to the fact I was doing this alone.

I seen the Chevy guys lift the bed, tilt the bed, remove the bed. Even cutting out a section of the bed to access that pump. Is that possible for the Ford? Or is there a crazy amount of things attached and becomes a major PITA.
@KReesethebeast
@KReesethebeast 8 жыл бұрын
I have seen that before too. with more people you could lift the bed but I did it by myself so it was easiest for me. Also I wasn't crazy about cutting a hole in my bed. Removing the skid plate and 2 straps was not too hard for one person, but I would definitely drain the tank first. Thanks for watching.

Okay thanks for the reply. My issue has been when i go to start the engine occasionally, it will fire up and die immediately. Then once i can get it running, I can hear an electric motor sound coming from around the fuel tank, which i assume is the fuel pump. Except it is pretty loud and I have not noticed it before. Any thoughs?
@KReesethebeast
@KReesethebeast 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you will hear the pump run. Does it drive and run fine at operating temperature? When is the last time you changed the air filter, spark plugs, and added some fuel treatment? That should clear up any rough running on startup.
@xanzoxanv8163

Does the truck have to be on when depressing the gas valve in the engine
@KReesethebeast
@KReesethebeast 5 жыл бұрын
No it does not have to be on. It should have pressure on the rail after you turn the engine over. See if you can hear the pump prime when the key is in the run position. If you don't hear anything, ther e is an issue with your pump or the power going to it.
@smoke05s

OK I spoke too soon. The pump works flawlessly but the level sensor seems to have a problem. The service engine soon light is on at all times. The gas gage is either pinned below empty or is on empty. it can move betwen 1/4 and below empty (it actually has about 3/4 to 1/2. It was really dirty under there and I may have got dirt in one of the connectors. Does this sound like the fuel pump connector or the rear connector?
@KReesethebeast
@KReesethebeast 7 жыл бұрын
Christopher Young if you have a check engine light I would put a code reader on it and see what it is and clear it that way. As for the level not being correct mine did at first and I turned the ignition off and on and drove the truck around some to make the gas move around in the tank and free that sensor up on that level. It still will not go up with the truck running if you are putting gas in it but if you turn the ignition completely off and turn it back on it reads fine. Hope that helps.
@smoke05s
@smoke05s 7 жыл бұрын
The check engine light was for a small leak in the fuel tank. SO I got a new hose set and I got a new pump but I wanted to make sure all the pins were the same as the stock one. The replacement pump had the same pin out for the pump but the fuel sender was reversed (looking at the connector WIth the release up top The pin to the right is pump +, lower right is fuel sender ground, lower left is pump -, upper left is sender +). I rewired the sender to make the pin out matched the stock pump and it worked. Check engine light is gone and the level is now correct. I did not change the hoses. That means voltage was being sent to the ground which was messing with the pressure sensor. Hope this helps others that got an ebay pump.

have you checked your pressure on the fuel rail? If you can hear the pump prime, it is working. If the truck has been sitting like you say, you may just need some fresh gas.
