How to Replace Missing AC Compressor Clutch Hub / Plate | AC Not Cooling

My Ford Mondeo MK4 AC stopped working (didn't push cold air). The AC compressor was quickly diagnosed to miss the AC compressor clutch hub (also called a clutch plate).
The AC compressor will not engage without the clutch hub since the clutch coil which is inside the pulley can't pull the hub which would turn the ac compressor shaft.
The clutch hub is fixed with one M6 bolt to the ac compressor shaft.
In some cases, the bolt gets loose and falls off leading to the clutch hub falling off.
The local car ac repair shop offered to fix the ac for 635€ of which the new clutch assembly would have cost 415€ (from the Ford dealership) and the installation work 220€.
A new ac compressor could be found for 200-300€ so the clutch assembly was way overpriced. Anyhow, I didn't even need the whole clutch assembly but rather just the clutch hub which costs far less and is also easier to install. The problem was that the local stores don't carry just the clutch hub so I had to order online.
I paid under 50€ for the clutch hub with shipping and a few M6 bolts and shims. I bought a few different lengths of bolts 16mm, 20mm, and 25mm. I think I ended up using the 16 or 20mm long M6 bolt. M6 bolts and regular washers cost around 10€/kg (so mine cost 0,3€ in total) and for 0,1mm shims I paid 0,2€ per piece.
The local hardware store sold M6 bolts and regular washers. For the really thin shims, I went to a local store selling bearings nomogroup.fi/.

I have a Ford fusion 2014, and the screw on my ac clutch came off, but I had no idea until I popped the hood and saw that the clutch was crooked and popped out- so I replaced it, a M6 x 20mm, bam! Thanks for this video. I had a similar problem on a Ford S-Max. The Clutch Hub had “disappeared” probably due to bolt becoming loose. I was quoted over 1,000 Euro to fix as dealer said they would have to replace entire A/C compressor. In the end it cost me 60 Euro for components (replacement Clutch Hub, bolt and washers and shipping). I used an M6 x 16mm hex bolt with 3mm of shims on the inside as per your video and a lock washer. Gap left was about 0.7mm. It was challenging to do as it is very tight access and I had to do the placement and bolt tightening mostly by feel.

Thanks for this! My wife has a 2013 Fusion and I found that this exact thing happened to her, the clutch plate was hanging on for dear life with the middle bolt missing. I was looking around online for those shims and they are ridiculously marked up for what's basically a washer....So, I think what I will do is buy a couple of those M6 bolts and washers like you did and use my grinder to grind down the threaded end of the bolt to "fine tune" it to the required clearance. Will either end in success or a divorce 😅

I just did mine. $40 part from ebay. Comes w 3 shims 0.6mm thick each. I installed 1 and it rubbed (don't have to even bolt it, install with shim in the back of the hub you'll see if it rubs) installed the 2nd one super close but doesn't rub you can use the 3rd shim to check the gap because they 0.6mm. Drowned it in red locktite, held it locked with a screw driver and tightened around 25lbs the 10mm bolt. Cold as ice

Mine just fell off for the third time the last two times I put red Loctite on the bolt. I just forgot to tighten it for too long again. I just keep a spare around from the junkyard... typical Ford.... the first time it happened I figured it out and I was at the dealership for something else and I asked them about it. They quoted me a thousand bucks to fix it. When I told I allready kmew what was wrong with it they told me that they never heard of anything like that happening ever before on any vehicles that they've had in there. I just laughed at them...

How'd you fit in there to install the new plate? Doesn't seem like there's enough room in between the frame and compressor in my 2014 Ford Fusion to get the bolt tightened down.

I recall it was s tight fit and had to go by hand feel without visually seeing. Might be the Mondeo had a bit more space
