Easy how to, this time changing rear brakes (drums) in a ford focus MK2 and it's a year 2007.
Very easy if you know how to work a spanner, and not much to go wrong.
If your easily panicked just take a picture before you pull apart there's only about 6 bits and there's only 1 place for each thing.
And once you do it, you never forget
Most brake systems either look just like this, or come apart in the same way.
Be safe, support the car, and always use grease on moving parts, to ensure maximum use from your parts.

Thanks for this. Helped me change my shoes. Just a couple of things that may help others. When putting the shoes back on the pistons you have to stretch the spring around with shoes attached, this causes the pistons to push in on one side and out on another. My cylinder leaked a little but was okay when in place. I will have to change cylinders because the pistons are not supposed to push in and out so much, so this will cause corrosion inside and potentially damage them causing them to lock up as brake fluid is corrosive. On the other side i avoided this by placing some small sockets either side of the left shoe so it wouldnt move the piston in order to stretch the right shoe and spring over to the right.

@oraclescave
@oraclescave Жыл бұрын
There is a winding mechanism in between the shoes, unscrewing it to open the shoes wider, testing the drum can still turn freely with minimal amount of scraping, if the shoes are too wide and can't turn the drum just screw back some until drum can still move. You just want it to barely start scraping when drum is on. Scraping too much will cause friction and heat, that's bad. But just as it starts to contact the drum is enough, and your handbrake should work fine. I'm sure that's what should correct your issue.

It can be a few things. Worn brake pads, bad discs with scoring on them, a stiff caliper that is starting to seize up. Just check them and look for obvious issues, undo the slider pins and clean them up and put some grease on them, it's possibly the piston in the caliper that's starting to seize up so it's not fully squeezing the brake disk on one side. You can take the wheel off, start the car and have someone apply the brake, and when you tell them to let off, watch for the movement in the caliper, when applied and when let off, you should see a noticeable squeezing motion, if it looks like nothing happened then you find which side is the issue. If both are squeezing fine and letting go fine, then you know it's either your pads or discs that's the problem. But I would bet its discs or piston in the caliper that's causing it. Hope this helps you narrow it down.
@oraclescave
@oraclescave 7 ай бұрын
And yes it could also just be your shoes, but if the discs have grooves, it's best to replace them aswell, so you have full clamping force, grooves on the disc can cause the issue you are having.

There is a little adjuster at the bottom, so if you still have pad material left, you can twist the adjuster to spread the pads out. And just test fit the drum again, you want the pads to nearly scrape the drum, when you hear scraping just back the adjuster off a tiny amount and you will have a perfect setting without even taking everything apart in there.

Hi, great video! Thanks. One question, do you need a hub puller to pull the drum off? Ii notice you use 2 bolts, are they just 2 bolts you found to fit? It looks very similar to the Peugeot drums but you need to replace the wheel bearing on those bad boys if you need to replace the drums...which I need to do I think.

I've removed drum and found left retaining pin has snapped but how do you push another pin in as it isn't straight through and plates in way, do I remove backing plate or is there a easier option (really hoping there is lmao)
@oraclescave
@oraclescave 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, if it looks like you can remove backing plate to get to the area, just do it. I remember one if my other cars needed the hub to be removed. So it would be the much easier option to go the back plate route, I have never had to replace them on mine. But I'm sure there is an easy way, you should check out some of the forums, they will probably have some how-to threads with pictures. I'm sure it will be simple, so dont stress. 👍👍👍

Lol pain in the arse drum was stuck as pin had snapped anyway had a grinding noise from brake and the snapped pin was the culprit, thanks for reply I'll have a look on some forums and see if I can figure it out, I tryed to pry plate forward but isn't enough to slide pin in, the right side is just push straight in why did they design it in such a stupid way 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@lea-rw5cb possibly squeezing a drill in there and trying to put a small hole where the pin goes in, so you can sneak it in there. It might be tight to get a drill in, to add insult to injury I have a little parkside 90 degree elbow for drill bits, would make that job much easier. But where there's a hole there's a way. 👍👍👍

Where do you add grease to stop squeaking when you realise the break peddle please?
@oraclescave
@oraclescave 5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure your pads have not worn out, that could be the cause of squeaking, and if you changed them already you might not have set the adjusters accordingly, and you will need to take hub off and unwind the adjusters until the brake pads fit the hub better. But grease should be applied to all parts in the centre of the hub, springs, adjusters, pins, retainers. Hope this helps
@Galactica-Actual
@Galactica-Actual 5 жыл бұрын
@@oraclescave Hi, thanks for the reply, Pads are OK and hub has been cleaned out of break dust. Because the squeak only happens when the break peddle is released, I have been told the contact pointd need lubrication, I just don't know what the contact points are, lol
@oraclescave
@oraclescave 5 жыл бұрын
@@Galactica-Actual they just mean all the surfaces of the moving parts inside behind the drum. Maybe corrosion inside the drum is just very dry and crusty causing stuff to not swing freely. Once you get the drum off maybe just rubbing everything with a wire brush first will help then just apply grease to everything from the back off the pads towards the middle. Just be a bit dry in there that's all

@oraclescave
@oraclescave Жыл бұрын
Did you attach the handbrake mechanism back where it was ? And did you twist the adjuster wheel to expand the pads and test with putting the drum on to makes sure it was slightly scraping when hub gets turned. Usually this is the issue, just take your time and don't freak out. The brake has to be set, and if the mechanism is all attached where its supposed to be, it just needs adjusted to spread the pads, because the handbrake will only expand the pads a little bit. So the winding mechanism just needs spread until the hub slightly rubs when turning then the adjuster can be backed of a tiny bit. And everything will be fine. You can also try pumping the foot brakes to try and set the winding mechanism without pulling it all apart, so I would try this first. If none of it works, I would probably re-do it again. I also have a video on tightening the handbrake for this car, but it's best to do it the adjusting winding wheel way first, before trying the handbrake video. It's not too complicated, if it's your first time it will seem scary, just take your time, no rush, it's important you go step by step, but even my 12 year old kid knows everything to do and he has only done it 3 times. So take your time and don't freak out. I'm here if you need anything at all
@oraclescave
@oraclescave Жыл бұрын
The brakes will work no matter what because they just pump pump pump the piston out to the right place. The handbrake only activates the pad spread a very small amount, so if pads are not spread enough, it can't bite in enough. So go slow, it might take a few times to adjust the pads taking hub on and off. Then once that's done, IF the handbrake needs tightened, which it probably won't need done, there is a quick how-to and is very very easy, can't go wrong. Let me know what's happening as you do stuff, I would rather see you save chunks of money and learn to do them yourself, it will give you good confidence in yourself once you complete it. Biggest rule is take your time.
