Thanks! Truly appreciate your video. Our ice maker had completely stopped making ice, and we were doubtful that we could do this successfully by ourselves. I cannot tell you the EXCITEMENT when I heard the ice drop!! 🎉 As any FYI for other people doing this at home - it took about 24 hours for the display to return to normal. Everything is perfect now.

I really appreciate the video, I was eventually able to get the ice maker out. It was more difficult in my case because the entire assembly was a block of ice, so I had to carefully chip away at the stuff I could, run a defrost cycle, hit it with the hairdryer for 10 minutes, run another defrost cycle, more hair dryer, and finally I was able to remove it. You know, for expensive fridges the ice maker really sucks.

I read that for this style of Samsung fridge ice maker, they are aware of the excessive frost/freezing, and built a replacement with changes made to cycle timers and stuff, but it's not free. :(

Does force defrost mode defrost the entire fridge or just the ice box. I have the same issue and I'm hoping I'm not about to ruin all the food in my fridge.
@skylertravisnix5507
@skylertravisnix5507 Жыл бұрын
@@thecoalregioncarpenter7498 there are multiple options for defrost. Once enabled, be sure to cycle the setting to "Fr". If you go past it don't worry, you can keep pressing a button to go back to it. The "Fr" setting only defrosts the icemaker, your food in other parts of the fridge/freezer will be okay.

Excellent video with step by step instructions that are very easy to follow. The only issue I had was actually removing the old ice maker. It took some time and patience. I had to wiggle and jiggle it back and forth and up and down. It is hard to get much of a grip on it but I finally discovered that by grasping the wiring harness that I had disconnected and pulling on that from side to side and up and down it finally broke lose and then came right out. The rest was all very simple. After the job was complete it took 10 hours to get the first load of ice to dump but by the next morning the ice bin was full and it continues to work as it should. Also, pay attention to his comment on shining a light along the edge of the bottom of the ice maker. When I did that I saw light come through the entire bottom where it meets the wall. That may have contributed to it not working in the first place. I couldn't get my caulking gun to fit under there so I had to just put some caulk on a finger several times and wipe it along the edge from back to front. It isn't pretty but it also isnt visible and it did seal the opening. BTW, there was a class action suit against Samsung for these ice makers settled some years ago. So after I bought the new ice maker but before installing I called Samsung support to see if I could find a fix without having to replace it. I thought they might feel some obligation to fix this since it is a known issue. They walked me through some troubleshooting tips but none of them helped so they then offered to send out a Samsung repair tech with new ice maker and install it for free, parts and labor, no charge. The catch was, if the new ice maker didn't work meaning it was a different issue I would owe them $300-$600 for the service call depending on his time involved. Since I already had bought the new ice maker from Amazon for $99 I decided not to have them come out and just fixed it myself rather than risk that expense. Afterwards I thought they probably told me that 300-600 charge just to scare me away from having their guy come out, it worked. Finally, this guy in the vid sounds like a young TV actor I have seen on some show but I couldn't place the TV show it was from or the actor. Anyone else find that? Great job Mr Parts Dr.

i thank Part Dr for providing this video to fix a problem with the last Samsung product that I will ever buy. I had additional problems with defrosting the coil tube. I read several other comments that helped me to do the job right. The forced defrost did not work well but I alternated between it and a blow dryer which took a long time. Most of my time was spent on defrosting. After removing the electrical hook up and getting the ice maker dropped, the build up of ice/frost did not allow the ice maker to be pulled out. I hooked up the electrical connection to prevent any water to get into the wiring. The two button shut off didn't work but I could shut off the power to the POS frig from the panel box. I had the power turn on to do the force defrost and then use the blow dryer. I had the ice maker shut off on the touch screen but it would chill after the force defrost while using the blow dryer and start to accumulate frost again. I would have turned the power off while blow drying if I had to do it over. I did turn the power off to complete the job. Next frig which may be tomorrow will be an LG. I recommend that anyone reading this prior to replacing the ice maker read several other comments so they too can know what to do if they run into problems with this POS refrigerator. Peace out!

Hi there. These instructions were awesome! Just a couple of notes from my experience. My refrigerator was a 2016 and the button combinations to turn off the fridge and do the force defrost that are shown in the video didn't work (and of course the Samsung user's manual and online chat were no help) so we just flipped the breaker to turn off the fridge. Also, if anyone had an "ice jam" like we did be prepared to take significant time to melt the built up ice before installing the new unit. And I highly recommend buying the clips recommended. Our model didn't need them. We didn't know that and bought them anyhow. Boy would I have been mad if I went through all that work and then realized that we needed them. They are just a few bucks so worth the saved aggravation if you do need them. The parts are great and this video was really clear! Thank you.

This was a great video on how to change as well as provide much needed codes to defrost as well as shut down the unit. We have a Samsumg French door model. Ice unit was replaced about 3 years ago with upgrade. Worked well for about 2 years, then it just started icing up. Every 3 weeks would have to deice to clear. So replacing the unit today. Also found that the sealant used, while showing in place was old. Removed all old sealant and re-sealed. I did notice something, that others may have observed. The upper shelve that folds that's attached to the ice maker box, I am going to assume that the weight placed on this may be causing the sealant to weakness. As the shelve is screwed to the box, thus placing a load on the plastic housing that may result in weakening the sealant. This could perhaps cause air to cycle into the box cavity and add to the ice buildup and needing to defrost/clear the ice. So going to redistribute the weight and see what happens. Will monitor and update how the process unfolds, but again thanks Part Dr for the valuable video.

The local repair business had a trick "he and other technicians had discussed online" 😳 for also getting rid of ice buildup in the cooling unit at the back of the main fridge compartment, and ice buildup in the freezer. My ice maker/fridge/freezer have been ice buildup-free for about a month now. Cost me $400 but I was going to junk the fridge otherwise. Glad to have a fully functional fridge again!

This video was incredible! I've been struggling with our ice maker for years. I ordered the replacement ice maker and the Y-clips. I suspect that I may have only had to add the y-clips though, since I noticed when I took the old unit out, the only ice buildup was at the base of the cooling coil. Still, my old unit was an outdated one, so I replaced it all and it has been working like a charm. It was well-worth the hundred bucks I spent for the unit, to eliminate the need to call the repairman. I can only hope it keeps working. I think I will routinely do the "forced defrost" just to maintain it. Thanks for a great video.

One thing that solves the issue in most of the cases is to ensure that the fridge is in a slight angle, having the front a bit higher. The wheels in the bottom of the device should not be touching the ground. Only the two "legs" that you have to turn clockwise to lift. No more ice buildup, no more water trickling when you get ice

I bought the "Y" clip kit and it has made a world of difference. My refrigerator came with the wheels adjusted so as to tilt the refrigerator slightly back towards the drain. I believe that if the motherboard is working properly the icemaker goes into a defrost mode either automatically or if a detector senses the ice buildup. This is what it seems like to me but not substantiated. There is also a heater which surrounds the drain tub to thaw out any ice buildup in the tub which if it is blocked with ice the water will overflow into the fan and auger motor module causing more problems.

Excellent video. A couple of notes from my repair. My fridge uses FREEZER+ALARM+FRIDGE to turn it O FF (a.k.a. Demo Mode) rather than just FREEZER+ALARM. You CAN use a hair dryer if necessary, but only on the coolest heat setting - anything warmer is likely to warp the plastic parts of the maker. My icemaker tends to get an ice dam buildup at the back of the icemaker where it touches the styrofoam at the back wall of the fridge. There is a duct there that needs to be ice free. Make sure that duct is clear before re-installing your icemaker. Finally, when replacing the screws, I suggest using a manual screwdriver, not power (or use one with a clutch set on very low torque). Again, this is very soft plastic, and you could strip the hole. Good luck!

Over time I have found that using a hair dryer can work, but it is challenging because it is easy to let the plastic pieces get too hot. A far better choice is something that puts out steam. I currently use the steam unit from a wallpaper remover unit (without attaching the piece that attaches to the end of the hose). That way, you're getting very hot, but not too hot, air (steam) to melt the ice. I have to defrost my icemaker about every six weeks this way, just like we did with my parents' ancient Servel gas fridge in the 60's. I had hoped Samsung had a more modern icemaker, but at least we don't have to use ice trays anymore!

The back story is that both LG and Samsung are Korean Made. When they designed actual appliances they realized that they needed ice makers in order for the US consumer to purchase them. Using ice is more of an American thing. Since the main patents are held by Chinese companies they would not grant patent permissions to these companies to use. Usually you can use other peoples patents in manufacturing with permission and a for a small fee. So these companies had to redesign ice makers without infringing on other company patents. Actually the Koreans have been designing electronics for the rest of the world and are far better quality than Chinese competitors. Japan switched to selling raw materials years ago so they no longer are the leader. Most all of the American Brands have sold out and are Made in China. The quality is nothing like it was 30 years ago.

Thanks for the video. I have had to do this now 3 times with our Samsung over 3-4 years. Very frustrating. I have taken the everything out and completely defrosted this area, but it is a problem with Samsung ice makers. From what I’ve read when this fridge gets old enough to be the outdoor fridge I will buy a different model but check reviews so we don’t go from bad to worse! I did like the post that suggests a sledgehammer for the ice maker once removed!

Excellent video, 100% clear and understandable. It saved me quite some money for the only authorised repair shop 400 km around. They want 79 € (93 $) only for sending a quote! Spare parts, travel and time would be on top. It's this only authorised Samsung repair shop 400 km around. Following your video, I defrosted, took it out, dried it and placed it back. Then it worked again! This repair didn't cost me anything. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Still shame on Samsung, a three year old $2400 top line fridge should be a lot more repair friendly. Actually it should not even break. And Samsung should review the financial practices of their agreed repair centres.

Great video. Our version of the fridge does not appear to have the feature that you can switch it off using a button combination. That meant I had to empty out the fridge and freezer to pull it out so I could unplug it from the electric socket. My tip is have it plugged in somewhere where you don't have to do this, since there is always the risk of damaging the water line or connection as you are moving the fridge / freezer out or back. The food in the fridge and freezer should remain suitably cold for a few hours while it is off. Move any medications that need to remain cold to another fridge if possible. Place a pan or something similar under the ice box to catch the water as it thaws / defrosts. It should be small enough to comfortably sit directly under the ice box while the french door is open. Let your family, visitors, friends know not to try and close the french door while you are busy trying to get the piece of junk ice box working again.

Fantastic video!!! I purchased this ice maker from Parts Dr and replaced it in about 20 minutes. It's working great now! I didn't have a lot of ice built up around the old ice maker so, rather than force the refrigerator into defrost mode, I simply turned it off (at the breaker) and used a hairdryer to melt any ice/frost on the broken ice maker's cooling coil before I attempted to take it out. Thanks!!!

If there is ice in the icemaker tray and the icemaker compartment temp is below 20f and it isn't harvesting the ice you may have a bad ice maker or bad main control board. We haven't seen a process to completely narrow down which is bad on these refrigerators. We would recommend to start by replacing the ice maker and if you continue to have issues replace the main control board next.

Same on mine. Just more convoluted cryptic Samsung crap. Looks like they use the same hardware and buttons are programmed differently to confuse us. The only confusion I have is, how the hell are they still in the refrigerator business. These icemakers are high tech garbage. By the way BEWARE I learned yester day that the crisper drawers are made in 3 parts with fronts clipped onto drawers. THEY ARE NOT WATERTIGHT. A roast leaked and I pulled the drawer out to clean it and it dripped out the bottom and got all in betwee the white and clear plastic front. Why aren't they sealed? WTF? I wonder what else I'll discover is wrong with my fridge.

We bought all Samsung appliances back in October of 2016. Kitchen and laundry room. It’s now June of 2022. Besides the very ignorantly engineered ice maker, everything else has worked great until this year. I just had to replace one of the rollers inside the dryer for the drum otherwise they have worked very well. I can’t believe a company as big as Samsung was not able to come up with a fix for this we will never buy SamJunk again that is for sure. When we first bought everything we called and had the repair guys come out here six different times to try many different things with the Ice Maker and finally Samsung said just cut the cord send us a picture and we will refund you the money. Well I stalled with the picture because I told them I needed to get a replacement refrigerator so they gave me the money and never asked me for the picture of the cord so we got at least a free refrigerator freezer out of it LOL.

@@loosenut1969 funny you say that about the dryer, I had to just do the same, this yr. Unfortunately its a stackable took me a while to get down. But then the vents starting rattling and had to take down and secure it. I replaced ice maker NOT the board. And it has worked perfectly for a while. I noticed the big difference with it is the inlet tube is larger on the new one but i have had zero problems and its been a few months.

This is helpful... will check tonight. .. Well, I wrote that 6 months ago lol... but I finally got to work on my daughter's fridge - there was ice build up on the evaporator fan/coils causing noises.... Took a good 90 minutes of warm air blowing in to release the panel. It's worth to mention she got the fridge used (a big no-no but it was too late for me to intervene)... anyway, someone was there before, on the icemaker used, probably, a heat gun to defrost it causing the back panel to warp and the top melt.... I was able to take the ice maker out, but had to chip the molten plastic to remove the auger assembly, then finally dry things out, and caulk the icebox compartment. It is quite easy process IF THERE IS NO ICE BUILD UP..... what I'm saying is: allow time to fully defrost before you work on this fridge. And I said it before: if this fridge was an operating system, it would be Windows 8 ... if it was a car, it would the Ford Pinto....... Thanks for the valuable tips on this video !

This video was very helpful. I wish I would have seen it sooner. My icemaker works fine, but there is a serious problem where I am constantly having to defrost it. It builds up so much ice that it takes about an hour to defrost it. I got impatient and used a blow dryer, which distorted the plastic on the bottom of the icemaker, where it dumps the ice out on the right side. Now ice jams and causes more problems. Do I need to replace the entire icemaker now or can I just replace that piece of plastic that pivots down when you remove that first screw? Also, do you think I need that rectangular piece to stop the moisture buildup problem?
