GOOD NEWS ALERT 😎: THIS VIDEO is the most accurate I have seen. Thank you BEN. For all folks suffering from this problem I have GREAT NEWS. Due to the Class Action suit SAMSUNG is now performing this exact repair for FREE. It only took me 25 minutes using online chat with SAMSUNG to get a service ticket opened. Only 3 days later the entire job you described - parts and labor - was DONE by a trained Samsung technician. (New ice maker, upgraded heating coil, new Control Board - no silicone because Samsung has determined that this is not the cause of the problem.) My technician was trained on all Samsung products. Marvelous.

Hi Ben's Appliances, I am Ryan and I am a second generation Refrigeration Repair Man. My Dad went to Trade School in the 60's and learned Refrigeration Repair and I was given his school books and learned about it when I was a teenager. I have a class A and D Mechanical License and I did work on the Parallel Racks in the Large Grocery Stores for many years before I got my Contractors Licenses and started to work for myself. Now being in the industry for decades, I feel that R-12, R-502, R-500, and R-22 where the best refrigerants and now that flammable gas's are being used on small equipment is a disaster waiting to happen and the small equipment industry is going toward equipment that will not last long and is too expensive to repair so new equipment sale's become a better option for the public. A lot of my commercial customers have asked me to repair the refrigerators in their homes and the Samsung is a common refrigerator I come across and on-line I do not find anything really good said about that brand. I worked on one yesterday and it was frozen up in the refrigerator evaporator air channels and the ice maker but the freezer was working well. I found the fan was frozen up and not working and I expect to be working on that refrigerator again because it had dirty wire connectors for the fan and I tried to clean it up but I just don't expect it to work much longer. I do appreciate the video you post to help others with repair information and I thank you. I prefer to work on larger Refrigeration equipment but having customers and keeping them happy includes having to also get the refrigerators in their house working as well and the new house refrigerators are not what I like to work on, they are just not made well and they are not made to last long.

When unable to open the ice bucket due to ice build up, I called Samsung customer service. After recommending a few things that didn't work, like pour hot water on the ice, even after I told them the ice bucket was not coming out, I was told to turn off the appliance until all the ice was melted. EXCUSE ME???? They even told me to wait until I didn't have too much food which would be spoiled. My answer was we were not in the 1900's, and couldn't believe there was not some kind of set up to just unfreeze the ice maker. And then.... I found your video, woohoo, and got a power steamer (second hand) for just a few dollars and just took me about 5 minutes to melt all the ice. Samsung, maybe you should hire this guy to train your customer service, just a suggestion :)

The kit is not available for RF28HMEDBSR/AA Model but ice make service kit fits ok and improves service. But the control board pin out plugs don't work. 13 pins for 11 pin plug. 11 pins for 9 pin plug. You have to throw away control board (vale about $90) unless you can get upgraded ice maker without control board service kit. Just FYI! THANKS AGAIN.

I am going to echo the comments here. Samsung aesthetics are good but this fridge’s cooling and defrosting is a dumpster fire of flaws. We bought ours in 2014 and paid a small fortune. Began having problems not even 2 years later First is the defrost problem that happens behind the cooling system located in the back of the fridge behind the twin cooling cover. Oh was that a joy! It’s a design flaw where the frost removal elements don’t melt enough of the frost, and you get ice build-up. That causes the fan located in the back to start knocking. About 400 bucks in after-market heating solutions to fix that. So the repair tech was dead on with this issue. I had ice build-up every two weeks. I had to unplug the power and steam it for about 20 minutes. Rinse and repeat in another two weeks. I had finally had enough and found this. Bravo to you sir. The only thing I didn’t do is buy the newer tube that is larger. I am hoping I don’t need to go back in and do that but that is easy if I have to, I had a gap in the box that required that silicone that ran the entire length of the ice housing, You saw the light shining through from the top of the ice box. So after the 24-hour cure of the silicone and the better insulation of the existing tube, I am praying that is what the issue was. I live in a small area where they don’t sell or service Samsungs in the entire state. I now know why. I won’t be buying another Samsung appliance (TV or otherwise). The price is insane, and the life span of these devices is ridiculous. Fingers crossed I get ice in my cup and not my ice housing.

Hello, We bought our RF56 refrigerator in 2018. So we have been dealing with this issue for a good 4 years. We have had the service here 6 times. We have done sealants on the whole area with silicone, with extra insulation on the back wall, with aluminium tape,.... We have tried and tested all the spare parts that are supposed to remedy the problem. Heated hose, stainless steel clamps, additional plastic parts, all units were replaced several times... because the drain hose was enlarged again at the inlet and so on.... Not a single component on our ice maker is original from 2018. There is only one result, there is no possibility to operate the ice maker longer than 6 months without it freezing. Attention, even current Samsung models still have the same problems. It is simply a faulty design! The basic defect is that there is no way to switch off the cooling coil for the ice maker. In the long run, ice always forms on the cooling coil and slowly but surely grows through the ice maker. There are plenty of ice makers in other $500 refrigerators in the US that have no problems, whether tight or not, whether heated hose on the drain or not. I have to take away any hope, the faulty design cannot be fixed in the long run. The bottom line for us is clear: we will never buy another Samsung product in our lifetime.

I have a Samsung fridge and it's the worst fridge I've ever owned. All the chintzy plastic cracking and breaking, and the door shelves too. I've done a makeshift fix using bungee cords to keep the stuff from falling off the shelves. Under the vegetable drawers, there's a metal support bar under it, mine was manufactured too short, so a slight shift caused it to fall, break the screws, and caused all sorts of mayhem. I've fixed it by buying new square bars and sawing them down to the max possible length so it will never fall again. Also spent so much money having other things fixed like where the back vents are. It's almost like the fridge was purposely intended to break everywhere and force me to go buy a new one. Planned obsolescence at it's finest. There's not any part of the fridge that hasn't broken in some way. Avoid Samsung fridges.
@bensappliancesandjunk
@bensappliancesandjunk 3 жыл бұрын
Samsung tends to use the worst vendors to build their components. My experience is that off-brand parts are longer lasting. I've almost always used offbrand parts like ERP, LFORBB, Supco, Blue Stars, ect, and they work better. The original Samsung idler pulley bearing is guaranteed to break in 3 years on every dryer. A 3rd party company re-engineered a superior design w/ a roller bearing and they're still running great in probably millions of dryers now. The most ironic part? Samsung made most of the crap for Maytag before they went under. If you get a 2004 - 2006 frontload washer or dryer, its Samsung underneath the hood.

I purchased the parts to do this a long time ago, but I didn't get around to actually doing it until this week. The process went pretty smooth, although getting the auger assembly back in was challenging (the drain tube wasn't lining up with the hole in the back of the ice room). That took some creativity to figure out how to manipulate it. But I now have a full ice bucket !! We'll see if this is a permanent fix for the icing problem. Samsung had replaced my ice maker and caulked around the ice room back when it was still in warranty, but about a year later, the icing around the outside of the ice maker started again. I'm hoping the changed "timings" from the new control board is a big part of the fix.

@PaulBailey3 9 ай бұрын
How'd you accomplish this? I'm thinking to cut a portion of plastic so I can manipulate the drain tube, but curious how you did it? I tried a 2x4 and a hammer because I got frustrated and that is not working. lol

First video ice come across that gives a viable solution to the frosting problem. I've relied on a countertop ice maker for 2 years now because my ice maker would frost over every 2-3 days. I'll get it sealed up tomorrow and report back here soon.

Nice helpful video! The only think I might suggest is that if you're pinched for money you can save 100 to 150 by only purchasing the ice machine and condensate draim by itself. Then if after you install everything you think you need a board, you can always buy it separately, You will still pay about the same when it's all said and done. Also there are several reasons using silicone to plug up the air leaks is not recommended, if you ever have to remove it - it's very difficule plust its a mess and you have to wait 24 hours for it to cure. Using a toxic free duct putty will work much better. Thanks again!

@@bensappliancesandjunk You are certainly deserving of those words...just know your time and instruction are very much appreciated. I watched your video because we are getting pieces of plastic slivers, particles, and chunks coming out with the ice being dispensed. It happens on occasions and I needed to know where to look. My first thought was the auger in the ice bucket might be doing this, but upon examination, the auger is fine. I posted this concern on the Samsung Community forum, and I'm waiting to see if the monitors will respond with any suggestions for a repair other than a replacement. This ice maker is an Ice Max DA97-15217A with a production date of 06.04.2019. If this info scratches your memory with a solution, I'd like to know, please. Don

@@utube484848 There are only 2 or 3 things that would interact with the iice. The icemaker itself is plastic and has plastic fingers that lift the ice up and out into the bucket, the bucket, and the bucket's plastic auger. Thats pretty much it. You're sure its plastic slivers and not mineral buildup? I'd probably take the icemaker out and look in the tray and see if anythings shredded. If so, replace it.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately I watched it after doing the hair dryer trick. I bought a new ice maker but the plastic at the back that the ice maker sits against is warped so it doesn't want to sit in the box properly. Where can I get parts to replace the entire plastic box and/or the other components?

I bought the whole package of Samsung Appliances (include refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave & electric stove range). Dishwasher & microwave went bad in first 2 years. Refrigerator was fixed 3-4 times. Sometimes icemaker is not working. Sometimes it not getting cooled off. Never Ever buy Samsung Appliances at all. Even if they give away free, STILL NOT. All Korean products are trying to kill the competition by features & warranty. If there is auto or appliances. Now they have tv on refrigerator's door, etc, etc. More advance features means more problems & more repair cost. I replace all Samsung Appliances with Maytag. It has been 15 years for Maytag. Not a single problem.

Great video!! Extremely informative!!! So, I have a question for you. I tried defrosting my ice maker prior to seeing this video with a hair dryer and I noticed when I took out that ice maker that the inside top plastic piece that's in the back or the ice maker compartment is all warped ( I'm assuming from using the hair dryer). It is the piece with the lip that's toward the top of that compartment. is there a way to replace that piece?

@@illidelphian1508 You should be able to use the defrost command which will warm up the icemaker tray only and not damage food. You should be able to do the repair w/ the food in place, but make sure you turn it off temporarily. You'd want a new ice cube tray/icemaker for sure, whatever the housing is that cracked. Ben, excellent well planned and produced video. You certainly have a knack for instruction. So my ice-maker does work. My problem is that after defrosting, disassembling, and putting back together, it will function for about 5 days before it freezes up. Based on your video, this tells me that moisture is getting into the system. My feeling is that since the machine works, perhaps I just need to put in the parts and sealant that would help keep moisture out. I'm just trying to avoid buying the whole kit if it doesn't need it. Or, would you suggest simply calling it a day, buy the kit, and do a full replacement? I agree with the comments below......meaning......I would never buy this fridge again. The icemaker in this unit is a poor design and extremely frustrating.

It's frosted over for months since we bought this house. I'm handy and a DIY person, so I will look into trying to fix this myself. Some people say on comments that samsung refrigerator is not good, I don't agree, mine had this problem but samsung sent a technician who installed a new ice maker, no problem so far, we have a microwave, stove, washer and drier, tvs, and cell phones Samsung and we are happy with them, so I think all brands have issues nowadays trying to make things fancy, smart, nice, but Samsung is a well known brand and they stand for their products

The caveat is that this icemaker problem has been going on for 5-6 years. Maybe in the last 18 months has samsung offered to fix the issue free of charge, if they offer it at all. For about 3-4 years, anyone that's had this problem has been screwed.

Love your vids. Question, do I really need to change the ice maker control board and upgrade the defrost tube? The ice maker was fine for the first 4 years. Then we got the ice build up. After a few attempts of removing build up, it returned. I gave up for a couple of years since getting a countertop unit. I left the ice tray out and entire box eventually filled with a solid block of ice. I also had the main evap freezing over which led me to your ice maker vid. The evap area has been upgraded with your suggestions. Now the ice maker is removed thanks to the steamer idea. A while back I bought a new factory ice maker, harness cover, sealant and upgraded clip. I did this before knowing there was a factory kit including the control board. Suggestions please.

Thanks. I have a 7 yr old RF263BEAESR. It may have been a model identified in the national lawsuit? Always had low water pressure but made ice until it didn't-basically froze continuously as in videos. Samsung stepped up and replaced ice maker in 2020, out off warranty, free. Water pressure woes continued, had new water line run to fridge, great pressure everything worked great but ice maker wouldn't stop making ice. Samsung sent out authorized rep, replaced ALL ice maker parts, worked great for 3 weeks, now won't make ice, not frozen as seen in videos, did a reset, dropped a few cubes, but still not making ice. Going to call Samsung again!!
