Thanks for this. Did this last year and loosened every damn bolt I could find around that power steering pump. Gonna replace my water pump this week, so this is good info!

I'm glad I watched this video before messing with the power steering pump. I don't know why they made this belt tensioner design the way they did.

@tretouch You may want to take a look at the pulleys to see if on may possibly be warped or out of balance.

@honeybunch2k6 You might either be turning the tensioner the wrong way, or you could have the wrong size belt. It's always a good idea to remove the battery cable when working on the motor, but it's not needed for this project.

If there's is a lot of slack in the belt and it's a new belt, measure it against the old belt to see if you have a right size. This video will also show you how to tighten the belt.
@1AAuto12 жыл бұрын
Normally you do not want to do this because the belt is under tension and could spring back on you.

If you're a larger person you will have to remove the shroud and fan too. My forearms are 14" around and there was absolutely no possible way to get my arms in as far as this guys are which makes it impossible to loop the belt where it needs to go. Anticipate removing the fan and shroud if your forearms are near that size.
@kingmabb8 жыл бұрын
I cut my fan shroud in half horizontally and used clips like on a chest box that tighten as you latch them. I got so sick of what it takes to remove that damn shroud and how often I wanted it out of the way to work on my Jeep.
@Kactapuss7 жыл бұрын
I am not as good a belt fisher as you are. Got frustrated and removed the front clip to budge the (aftermarket replacement) radiator to get the fan shroud out of my 4.0ZJ. Good job with using the fan to pull the belt in, wish there was a way to get video of that move!

Do you have to reset the timing chain after you replace the serpentine belt?

You can if you want to, but it's not necessary.

Hey bud your video helped my intimidated self get the belt on after changing my water pump. But while I was tightening the belt the bolt by the power steering seems to have broken off. Can I use another shorter 15mm hex bolt that is shorter to finish tightening the belt? Thanks again!!!
@reckless35932 жыл бұрын
So to tighten it to stop it from squeaking do you loose the pully or the tensioner then what one do you tighten
@silverking69702 жыл бұрын
Hey I'm doing this repair right now and i can not get the belt around the last pulley. You did not seem to struggle with it however. Am I using the wrong belt? It says it's for a 4 liter 96-98 zj and I have a 98 zj limited

Hey i replaced my water pump and put a new belt on it but now my AC clutch squeals on start up. This has never happened before and I checked everything on the AC, idler pulley, fan, water pump, power steering and still couldn't find anything. Could this be from improper belt tightening?
@1AAuto10 жыл бұрын
The belt may not be tight enough, or if you have a belt tensioner that puts a certain amount of tension on the belt, it could be loosing some of it's tension. We carry new serpentine belt tensioners on our website with FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I have a question please forgive me if it's a dumb one. But I see a device connected to the battery with with a red wire. What is it? An alarm?
@1AAuto11 жыл бұрын
It may be an alarm or radio feed wire. You may want to trace the circuit to see what it leads to. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Thanks alot I broke my tensioner pulley bolt
@kingmabb8 жыл бұрын
Ok I see 1/4 inch of play in the belt EVERYWHERE. But that only depends on the force applied. I can push harder and get 1/2 inch play so what are the actual ways to measure this? I am familiar with my Jeep and if there is a squeal from the serpentine belt then I tighten it a little bit till it goes away. I keep it just loose enough so it doesn't squeal but seem to be going through Pwr steering pumps and Water pumps like you wouldn't believe. A- I know certain brands are pretty crappy now but still this is a problem!
@Kactapuss7 жыл бұрын
One trick I heard was that you can grab the belt at the middle of the longest run and you can twist it to gauge tension, proper tension is that the belt is hard to twist past 90 degrees. Ie- if you can twist past 90' go tighter, and if you can not twist to 90' go looser. Anyone else heard this?

@toxive20282 жыл бұрын
I changed my fan clutch once and I remember the fan shroud not coming out completely, I think you need to have the fan out as well. Adds a lot of time when you could just deal with the fan shroud instead.
