I successfully did mine on my '98 Grand Cherokee 4.0L! Thanks RB. I used the double-nut method to get the studs out. Also, I had really hard, old caked-on gasket. I used a wire wheel with a Dremel and that helped me get that mating surface smoothed out. I used the gasket compound and I upgraded to a Felpro gasket. I did this all in combination with a huge flush and a new thermostat. Took a long time and got messy, but this is the first time in a long time my Jeep has not been leaking. I only consider myself 'beginner plus' in terms of my mechanic abilities. Huge, huge thanks to you for your video, RB.

Good video! A tip for the paper gaskets, I personally usually just use bare paper gasket as long as the mating surfaces still look pretty decent or if it calls for some kind of gasket material. I do a lot more cleaning though. I clean the surrounding area and get the mating surfaces nice and shiny, then clean both surfaces with high % alcohol, brake cleaner or acetone. Then a good torque sequence and then torque wrench if there's specs and never had an issue

Yup I use that on every pump job with paper gasket

Thanks for the video, im about to do mine. Question i have is this.. My temp would start going up above normal slowly then spike all the way but would drop 2-3 seconds later. It almost seemed as if my rad wasnt getting the coolant from my resevoir. Would this be the water pump?
@ericlenko72072 жыл бұрын
It definitely was overheating btw
@RBTheMechanic2 жыл бұрын
It could be thermostat slow opening change it as well and do use the sealer I use on pump seal other wise it will leak
@kainhall Жыл бұрын
Bad thermostat.... water pump only flows water around . It does not suck in coolant from the bottle (that's the rad caps job) . . I'd replace t Stat and then check for a blown head gasket / cracked cylinder head

Thank you so much for the video, This gonna help me a lot! Question, mine is just leaking coolant but not from the hoses, do you think gasket and sealant is enough or do I have to change the water pump?

This is an amazing video. I need to do this as my water pump isn’t pumping coolant as it should. Question though, my cooling fan is able to turn without the tension released off of the belt. Do I need to replace as well?
@RBTheMechanic3 жыл бұрын
That’s clutch I think it should be fine there is a test for that but I would not touch it yet
@kainhall Жыл бұрын
It's a clutch fan....it should turn and the pulley stays still If both move, your belt is too loose . If the fan spins with no resistance.... the clutch is bad . It should turn with more resistance when hot, less when cold . . If you start it and let it idle.... then Rev to 2500rpm... you should hear the fan go from hurricane to nice breeze (that's the clutch loosening because at high RPM it doesn't need to turn as fast)
@Dibran9mm3 жыл бұрын
I installed it rb. Question and this may sound silly. But after everything is installed , do i just add anti freeze to the resevoir?
@RBTheMechanic3 жыл бұрын
U have to fill the radiator up should take close to 2 gallon also fill up the reserve close the radiator cap then let the car run for 20 minutes keep an eye on Re gauge then turn it off let it cool off it should suck in antifreeze then top off again
@kainhall Жыл бұрын
Remove rad cap, fill Wait 5 mins for it to bubble down Fill and wait 5 mins . Do that till it will not take any more coolant . Start vechile and check for heat at the vents (no heat = big air bubble = possible engine damage) . If no heat, shut off engine, fill rad some more and squeeze hoses to try and get the air out . . Let it run till operating temp so thermostat can open . The upper hose will get HOT HOT when it opens . . Fill rad, put cap on Fill Reservoir bottle Done

Hi, I have a loose radiator fan that keeps hitting something, do you think the fan might just be loose or would I have to replace the water pump. I have the same 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Thanks

Loosen up the belt to see if pump has play before you replace anything
