In this video, master mechanic Mike Bauer and myself show you how to replace shift solenoid B (or as GM likes to call it, shift solenoid 2-3). The Service Engine Soon (SES) light came on and the car was stuck in 3rd gear when putting the automatic transmission into Drive.
My $40 OBD II diagnostic tool read the error code from the car as P0758 and a quick Google search showed many other GM owners that have the 4L60-E transmission having the same problem, requiring the same fix and being told it will cost thousands of dollars to repair 'properly' by 'professional' mechanics.
The dealer recommended tearing down the entire transmission first to see if it was worth repairing at a cost of $330. The dealer also recommended changing all 5 shift solenoids and the wiring harness, plus a new filter and fluid at a cost of $1100.
This repair required about 90 minutes and $65 worth of parts doing it ourselves.
The car has 192k miles on it. I'm the original owner and always kept up with the maintenance. It is the original transmission and this is the first repair the transmission has required in since I purchased the car in 1999 (16 years ago). And, after the repair, it's still working great!
Before starting this project, two fantastic videos showed me exactly what to expect if I was going to tackle the job myself.
The first video is by a gentleman named Craig Lambaria:
• 4L60E 1-2 SHIFT SOLENOID
The second video is by Silas Miller:
• 4l60e Transmission shi...
My goal was to make a complete 'start to finish' video with as few edits as possible so anyone with a couple of tools and little to no experience could follow along and complete the repair on their own.
WARNING: Work on the car when the engine is cold. The transmission fluid can be very hot after driving the car and it can seriously burn and injure you!

Thank you for this video. By far the best video I've seen breaking down a problem with SES light. very thorough with even giving helpful hints on general knowledge base things about transmissions. at no point did i feel the need to skip any point of this like some very poorly explained videos that either miss or skip minor details. great work! 👍🏽

I really appreciate your video. I have a 99 Suburban that just came up with 0753… the solenoid next to the one you replaced. I'll probably be replacing it this weekend if I have good weather. I haven't noticed shift problems though. I can stomp it and spin the tires. But I'll probably be replacing both solenoids since they are inexpensive and I don't want to have to do it again in a month or year. I also video document most my vehicle work. I do so this time I'll let you know. Thanks again. It was really helpful.

Great step-by-step video. my buddy's truck is having the same issue. I'm planning on replacing the solenoid for him this weekend. I will probably go ahead and replace both while I already have it apart. He bought this truck (1998 Silverado) used and it has 250k miles. Depending on how the fluid looks, for safety sake as you said, may end up putting the old fluid back in.

Haha I know it must've been pretty hard to film under there, really appreciate it. The previous owner of my Mustang (99) lowered it so fitting under there while the car's on ramps is incredibly uncomfortable. But this video just goes to show how much money you can save by doing your own maintenance on your car (especially if you go to a dealer). Luckily I know a few guys right down the road that own their own shop (always make friends with a mechanic!). Thanks Carey and Mike :) (Also can't blame you for not wanting to come to NJ :P but let us know if you do!)

I sincerely thank you for your video. You showed me that I would NOT have to drop my valve body to change the solenoids. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mine is done now. I did it yesterday afternoon into the evening. It took me a little over 4-hours to complete, to the point where I could add new fluid. Filled just right and no leaks. I changed both shifting solenoids; 1-2, 3-4, along with the downshift solenoid. I ran into one hiccup along the way with that downshift solenoid though. I originally placed it into the wrong spot and found out that the electrical connector won't fit it. So I had to pull it out along with the right one to replace. This downshift solenoid will only fit the wiring connector where it is supposed to be at. If replacing the downshift solenoid, I recommend having a small "pick tool," because those metal pens are not readily available to get with a screw driver. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks again for the video. PS: My "Service Engine Light" went out right away when I started my engine after changing my solenoids. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is a classic one for you Carey. I have a 97 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L. 4 cylinder. My dad bought this car for me to get my license in and to learn how to drive. The exhaust system rusted out in the car. A local repair shop wanted $1500 with parts and labor to repair it. We paid the front desk $40 since they had to look at it then we left. My family mechanic repaired the entire exhaust system for us. That’s crazy isn’t it? From that day on I work on my own vehicle and if I get stuck I take it to my family mechanic.

Thank you so much for posting this video. My Dad's car is exactly like yours with only around 60K miles, but it's been presenting the same issues as yours did before you changed the solenoid(would not drive on D). Your friend did a fantastic mechanic job and you did an excellent work filming the whole process. So, 5.5 qts of transmission fluid correct? I'll be trying this fix soon for my Dad.

This is exactly what I’m doing right now with my 98 Chevy Express. Having to shift from 1-2, then drive as 3rd doesn’t work. But once in D I can get up to 70mph, but coming to a stop I gotta go back to 1. No CEL though, trans was rebuilt with all new solenoids and was told that it was possibly an electrical issue as they said that there wasn’t enough power getting to something.

Yeah mine 99 suburban 5.7) shows a history code for shift solenoid A and B but no CEL light. When I first bought it a few months ago it wouldn't shift into overdrive but that was it. I disconnected the battery over night and cleaned the maf (separate code) and it shifts with no problem now but the codes are still stored. Maybe it hasn't had enough drive cycles yet, idk. I'm still dealing with hard start issues. Swapping the fuel pressure regulator tomorrow.

More of Subaru Mike please! Preferably with a DOHC Subaru engine! Oh yeah, about the trans drain plug - back in high school when I worked at an autoshop another high school coop accidentally pulled that plug instead of the one on the oil pan, needless to say the tech he worked with was not happy. One of my relatives had the shift solenoid problem. I could literally floor the throttle and the car would not accelerate. The car itself was worth $750 and was leaking oil like a sieve so it went to a junkyard.

I had the same exact problem with my GMC Sonoma - the reason that problem happened was because the engine overheated while i was on the road / a bad radiator cap drained the coolant. Whats cool is the OBD reader can show what to fix most of the time. Yeah 4 figures is way too much for what basically looks more like a transmission fluid change.

I went to speedy transmissions, they told me that my transmissions shot cause I had metal in the oil pan. and the code was solenoid E on an 03 corolla. So I went to various transmissions places and they said my transmission was fine, a little dirty that what may have been causing it to stick. sure enough I flush the tranny fluid and it was the tranny fluid. Not that my issue applies to theis video, but mike is right. Most shops will tell you your transmission is shot just to get the bill to repair it. As a consumer, make sure you shop around and try to find honest places to give you an opinion. Thanks aamco.

Pulled my 1996 S-10 trans and had it picked up and rebuilt. NOT even 500 miles on it and 3rd gear slips at low rpm and sometimes it is fine. If I give it more gas it will grab. So I bought the whole brand new solenoid harness on Ebay and it's a AC- Delco not aftermarket. And still doing the same thing. When I installed it no metal flakes in oil at all. I do not have any codes at all and or check engine light does not come on. I read when you do a few steps on your code-reader and you clear the history and that might help. Open to suggestions. Maybe bad solenoid even though it was NEW?????

I have a 2002 chevy blazer xtreme and i have the same problem with the RPMs and speedometer, but my car takes forever to start, averaging like 20 cranks before ignition. When i accelerate, it takes forever to get to even 35mph. When i let off the gas and step back on real quick the rpms go back down and it seems to have a "shifting" effect and helps with acceleration. But it becomes progressively difficult after the first stop sign / traffic light. The speed to RPM ratio gets way worse way faster. Shifting to park while idling at lights helps to keep going for longer but not by much.

I have a p0785 I changed the shift solenoid for the code but code stays until engine gets warm. I have a code reader I can erase it after the car heats up. I was experiencing the same symptoms as the code you had I replaced the A-B solenoids as well. But every time the car cools down the code P0785 will show up. Other symptoms are abs and brake light. Shift indicator light on lights up on [3] and it’s blinking rapidly while I’m driving. After car warms up, misfire codes. I get very bad gas mileage . Also, before reinstalling the pan, I had to be careful because those A-B solenoids can be destroyed if the pan doesn’t go back on correctly. I thought I’d mention that because I replaced them because the pan wouldn’t go back on and those solenoids were stopping it and the pan broke them as I was putting it back on

Question, When I had the auto store run the test for my engine light. I got two error codes. One code was a plug misfire and the other was the shift change sensor. Now I'm seeing the other solenoids. So they told me it was on the drivers side in the far left corner in the front. It is a TCS28 Solenoid. So now my question after watching this video is, Is there such thing as just a shift change sensor or is it as I am seeing here. different solenoids for the different gears? Anyway my mechanic is only going to charge me $70 to replace it since I have my part and fluid.

You didn't show one part. He didn't remove the o-ring from up in the transmission valve body when he removed the old filter.
