Variations you're referring to are what's known as the original V1 controllers, and then the newer V2 - the V2 are the ones that had a different connector and are the ones you'll typically be buying new in box these days. The V2 are much better and have much better battery life - most of the ones that need a battery replacement will be the V1.

​@Moa_Smug I was burned by one from ebay because I wanted a controller to use for pc. It was cheaper than sony/best buy, found out it was a fake after the button symbols where crooked. It still worked surprisingly(heard worse stories), so I let anyone who I knew was rough on controllers use that one lol
