I installed those yellow Bilstein HD shocks and struts on my 96 Volvo 850T5 sedan around 10 years ago. They are made well, but my wife summed it up quite well when I installed them" the car feels like a horse carriage on the back roads of Romania". I thought they are way too harsh for a common daily driver. They handle well through turns and would be great on the track. After 10 years they aren't leaking and just as stiff as when new. So they are made very well. I have a order in for Sachs and will be restoring my 850 back to the original comfy ride. Excellent videos Robert, we are very lucky to have you in the Volvo community.

+PAUL MACZ she would know. Lol, the B4 Bilstein's are probably better fit for city driving where the streets are very patchy for repairs. I recently I stalled them on our daughter's S70. B6 = HD, B4 = Touring. How many miles do you think are on your B6's?

The OEM springs are usually better. How long have you had the struts installed? Takes about 1,500 miles to soften up a little and 5,000 to be broken in.

Thanks again for this video. I find it difficult to torque things "exactly" because it's difficult to measure 90 degrees in a tight area. I'm speaking specifically about strut to steering knuckle bolts, because they take roughly 50 ft lbs plus 90 degrees. Do you think that a little over 90 ft lbs of torque is adequate for strut to steering knuckle bolts? It's ok if you don't know, I'm just curious. That's what I measured it at after tightening.
@RobertDIY7 жыл бұрын
90 Degrees is 1/4 of a full turn. You can mark a bolt and take short stabs at it.

Hi Robert. Thanks so much for this. I just did my front struts. Torqued everything to specifications as best I could. Only difference was that I got stronger bolts (10.9) for the two strut mounting bolts on each strut because those were the only I could find. Everything is fine, but there's a constant, slight rattle in the front left strut (even when not going over bumps). Any ideas? I'm wondering if it needs to break in or something.

+Samuel Kilada rattle? At what speeds? Should be solid.

+Robert DIY Mostly at low speeds, a constant rattle. Weird thing is by the time I got to work today it had mostly stopped! Perhaps the difference in suspension stresses things differently? I jacked up the car and checked my bolts, everything seemed to be torqued right.

Hello Robert...just had the front struts replaced on my 850. Question: with the hood open and I push up and down on the front end, should the top rubber grommet/bushing at the top of the strut move up and down as well? When I push down, the rubber bushing is about an inch or so above the frame. I thought it was suppose to be secured. The car rides terribly with the new struts. The shop is being cool about it, and I'm taking it back today so a different mechanic can look at it....thoughts?

+Robert DIY Can it be my fuel pump going out? I will start it in morning let it warm up.. drive a mile down the road.. it starts bucking, stalling and then dies.. will take 3-4 times of turning key before it will start.. only way to keep it running is to have in neutral and pressing on gas so it wont die. Or can it be camshaft position sensor.. trying to narrow it down so I am not missing work? Don't have money or time off of work to send to shop.. Thanks for helping

I do beleive the 2 bolts on the lower end are not a thight fit and the angle of the wheel will be affected if you just put them back without adjusting,
@RobertDIY9 жыл бұрын
+hans joergen Skov They seem pretty tight but I'll have to check. But an alignment should be done anytime you remove suspension parts.

I'm going to be replacing front struts and getting new tires soon, should I do them on the same day and also get an alignment done? I will be replacing struts myself then driving 20 miles on the new struts to get new tires, is that OK?
@RobertDIY7 жыл бұрын
These cars have very little alignment adjustment so I wouldn't worry about an alignment until after you get tires.

awesome thanks, I bought this Volvo 850 a year ago with 140k on it and after one year and 10k miles the only problem I had was needing a new mass airflow sensor. any tips on what service you think Is essential for this car? I don't know much about the past owners maintenence habits but over the past year I've been religious about the basics and its been running great so far.

Robert, I am seeking a strut brace for my 2000 V70. It is the P80 platform, not P2. I CANNOT find one! OE part 9204176 but I wouldn't mind the OMP one either. I'd pay you a good price if you can get ahold of one for me!
