Excellent video. I might add, having worked on mine and others for some time: the console cover, grey around the gear shift "snaps" on to the wood trim panel with clips. You just reach under and pop them sideways, 4 of them, and the wood trim panel comes off very easy, this getting it out of the way . I referenced your video while installing a double dinn in my XC90. (:) Thumbs up

When he started it was bright outside...finished it was really dark. This looks like a job, but then when is it not? I'm up for the challenge. I was going to custom make the plate like I did on a '97 Honda Accord I did a year ago...and that was quite a job, but with this one, I'll use the aftermarket plate. Seems a log easier. Looks like plenty of room on top. I'm putting a light-bar on top my xc90 and that pocket looks like the best place to put a few switches to operate the thing. Thanks a million for making this video. Without it I would have gone mad, because I looked at the amp earlier to see the YAW control module (thank goodness there was no water there) and looked at the amp and thought, holy cow, this has to be re-wired. This video shows how to do it without any trial and error and without messing with the internal wiring and computer sensors, etc. I love KZbin tutorials! I feel like it's cheating!

Thanks for the video I though I would have to run wires down to the amp. You guys saved me a ton of time, i'm so grateful. For saving the factory radio, All you really need is board that the wires plug into, you can remove the display and all the buttons from the board and won't get any lights, windows and sunroof still work. so all you have to shove in the bottom of the dash is the little board. I used a metra window antenna very similar and it worked well. Made it feel like a new car with all the new features.

Hi. Firstly, great video. secondly, wanted to thank you for the detail in the video: I'm actually taking my XC90 back to a stock radio. It honestly looks like ferrets have been living behind the nasty 3rd party headhunt that's in the car at the moment. Wires have been spliced into, there's 3rd party boxes everywhere, I've removed GPS, a speaker and a mike that wasn't actually plugged into anything! You video has allowed me to work out how much work needs to be done to take it back to stock (sourcing a loom between the amp and the headhunt). So, again, thank you for the meticulous detail!

I was excited by your video to replace my 2003 Volvo XC90 radio with a double din radio, as well as the speakers. Wow, what a job this is to upgrade the speakers and wire up the radio, with Nav, Backup camera, etc. I don't know if you've done a replacement with a double din, with the bells and whistles, but it's not easy. The speaker rewiring is a task by itself. It would have been great to have the details of a double din replacement, to hook up car speed input, and parking brake, reverse, etc. Please respond if there's more help, or another source that would be helpful.

Well, you really did a great job. If I understand correctly, you leave everything in the car and you just need pretty much the speakers and power for the new stereo right? Well, you are saying that you loose the center speaker because normal car stereos do not have more than 4 speaker connections. Now how about if you leave the old system up and running just hiding in the "underground" would it be possible that you can leave the center speaker connected to the old system and you can keep all your car beeps like PDC warnings, seat belt warnings and such thru this center speaker?

Very professionally done! Excellent work! These Volvos have either 8-speaker or 12-speaker (premium). The after market head unit usually has 4 channels - FL, FR, RL, RR. Except for the central speaker (in the premium version) can you confirm the rest of the speakers are all working? I have the 8-speaker systems. The front door has 1 speaker + 1 tweeter. The rear door has 1 speaker and there is one speaker in the trunk where the seat belt for the third row is. Just want to make sure all 8 speakers will work with the aftermarket radio. Thanks!

I'm installing a double din after watching your video. I don't intend to use any of the factory parts, replacing the amp, speakers, running all new copper wiring, so what do I need to do other than reconnect the factory amp and connect the original 3 main pieces that I shouldn't get rid of. I also got the wiring harness that you recommended at the end instead of splicing, but not sure why I need it since not using any of the factory parts. I need you to clarify for me the other connections, i.e., getting rid of fiber optic connections, connecting reverse line, mute (lower volume), brake switch, and rear camera. I intend to get power from an always on source, and a ignition switch on connection (if I need to do that). I'm trying to get this done by 17 Oct '20. Help me Obijan.

@aaronryan3404
@aaronryan3404 4 жыл бұрын
They now make a wiring kit with direct plug in harnesses that plug into the factory harness, so no more cutting. They also have an antenna adapter that allows you to keep the factory antenna, as well as a wiring kit to bypass the factory amp and still utilize the steering wheel controls with the aftermarket stereo. I was looking into install kits earlier today because the factory stereo doesn't even turn on, hasn't since I bought this car a few months ago. I bought a decent bluetooth speaker to get by using the music on my phone, but it just doesn't have the same sound quality as an actual set of speakers, so I decided to finally get another stereo for it, and had to look into install kits to make sure it was doable, because I heard somewhere that alot of people couldn't replace the factory unit due to no install kits being available, but now I found out they are, so that's a relief knowing that I can put a nice system in here. While I was looking into the install kits I found all the other goodies that make the swap so much simpler.

Kevin does this eliminate and go around the factory amplifier, or does it still power the factory speakers? I would like a new head unit with Nav and backup camera for my 2007 xc90 with high performance sound. The head unit makes the car look and feel extremely dated but not having the speakers amplified would probably sound pretty bad. Thats a 4x120 amp I believe.

Update to my last post, as i have some decent diagnostic software i thought i would see exactly which parts of the original radio need to be still connected, (and i struggled to find room to squeeze the whole lot in behind as you have done) So it turns out the only part that needs to remain plugged in is the centre part with the display, you can unplug and leave out both side parts with the buttons on, they can be a but fiddly to plug back in, patience and a gentle push with a small screwdriver works. Just make sure they are the right way up, they are very small ribbon type plugs.

matt feith thank you. Using just radio power no. It would give you a low ohm load on whatever channel you put it on. If you add something like the Pioneer GM -D1004 you could. Travis, if you're still around, can you tell me a unit you would recommend. I love the sound from my Volvo premium but the radio is dying. I'm not interested in a ton of bling, just a good radio with Bluetooth.

Wow! I didn't realize how labor intensive this was. lol. I will definitely be paying to have this done. So can I purchase any car radio? or does it have to be a certain size?

great vid! a couple quick questions though. are the speakers now only powered by the head unit and not the amp? and if so, would an Alpine power pack be sufficient?

Cook White yes they are not on the amp any more. Yes a power pack would work great!

Patrik Rydell not that I have ever seen. The cost would be crazy though. Other optical converts for radios are 300/400$

Is the wire harness specific to the replacement stereo or is it universal?
@stevenb320
@stevenb320 4 жыл бұрын
I just did 1 and the factory amplifier was not reconnected to any of the wiring. The new wire harness connected directly to the factory amplifier wiring plug for plug minus the fiberoptic cable. It was ran the same way to the dash and had the wiring to connect the aftermarket head unit and steering wheel controls for a double din. Was not to bad other than the passenger seat didnt work for the power to move it so had to remove the seat to do the installation. Long process to do these vehicles.

Awesome stuff, very helpful but I also replaced the stock amplifier with an aftermarket pioneer 5ch amp.

did you put the amp back in the stock location? seems like a great idea. also if its a 5 channel did you get the center speaker to play as well?

I have done the job and the radio works. I didn't look for any steerwheel connections. I used the purple wire from the cigarette lighter but there is no permanent voltage on it, so I can't use this one to connect acessory or yellow wire. Can somenone tell me what other cable I can use?

12:45 the actual FM antenna is part of what is known as an “Antenna Farm“. This is a flexible green circuit board in the top back of the roof above the tailgate. If you look carefully, you can find a small silver metal box which is the power amp for the FM part of the circuit board. The roof of the car is electronically transparent in a non-metallic panel about 5 feet wide and 1 1/2 feet from front to back. All of the vehicle antennas are printed on this circuit board.

Sounds like you either did not install the antenna or it is not plugged in all the way

Did the same to my wifes 06 couple days ago. But i didnt mess with the amp i just splice the wires from behind the radio.i installed a double din with back up camera its a pita .dont splice the wires for the cig lighter for power theres three wires you have to disconnect from a harness with a fiber optic that you can use so the radio can keep its memory.
