To anyone doing this tutorial step by step: You don't have to remove the throttle body (control actuator) from the intake system! It can just come off with the rest of the intake. I know this because I stripped two bolts on my throttle body a month ago trying to remove it for cleaning. It simply comes off with the rest of the intake, just leave it attached. Everything else in this vid is spot on. Ry, thanks once again for a great tutorial!

I’ve been putting off this job for a year and I did it today. When I finished and started her up noticeable shaking and check engine light came on. Heartbroken I opened the hood again and I saw I forget to reconnect 2 of the coil packs (thankfully on the right side) its all good as new now! Thank you so much Ryan!

First, love the vids. Keep them coming. Second, vehicle left and right is not subjective and is always based on the driver. Drivers describe what the hear or feel while driving. Mechanics diagnose issues during a test drive. Drivers side is left, passenger side is right.

Hey there Ry, Love your videos, I have a 2005 Pathfinder, just rolled 236000 miles, and we just added a 2013 Armada with just under 100000 miles. You put so much detail into your videos and I don't want to take away from the work and effort you put into these. However, I have to say I have changed the plugs on my Pathfinder 2 times now, and never touched the intake collector at all. Just used a bunch of wobble extensions, and got a couple bloody knuckles. And if I can get my sasquatch hands into there, pretty much anyone can! What I do suggest, though, is making sure you have a few of the Spark Plug Boots on hand (NGK# 58913) as sometimes I've found they get seized in the spark plug tube. Also, you do need to partially disassemble the boot when extracting it from cylinder 3. You can get this job done in about 2 hours, without pulling the intake collector.
@Rythecarguy

Thank you! Your contribution would never take away from my work, only add. I certainly agree that it can be done without removing the manifold. I just like to follow the factory service manual when it comes to creating these videos. I also have to balance the amount of time and effort it takes to fiddle with something with the amount of time it would take me to just remove an obstruction. Most times I just decide to remove the obstruction.

i've watched a couple of your vids, they are awesome. thank you for taking the time to make them. i know you're following the fsm or haynes manual but a couple of extensions and a swivel can save you the chore of removing the intake mani. just a tip for those looking to save a little time.

Great video. When I did my 2008 Pathfinder I was able to get access without taking the manifold completely off. I just took out all the bolts holding it down and you can lift it up high enough to clear and get access. I left the throttle body in place too. I spent the extra money for the expensive Iridium plugs. Nissan rates the Iridium plugs for 110,000 miles so it was worth it to me just for that fact. My original plugs had 120,000 miles on them and they still looked great. The Iridium plugs are incredibly durable, I'm sure under optimal conditions in a good running engine they would last 200k or more.

Ry Buddy, I am going to tackle this soon, got everything and the intake gaskets. Also as long as I am there I am changing the camshaft sensors, crankshaft sensor, temp control sensor, thermostat, radiator hoses, PCV valve, and finally the valve cover gaskets, not in that order obviously. This Corona virus thing is going to keep me busy on the Xterra. Oh, yeah, Also using your fuel pump replacement video to do that, the fuel level sending unit is shot and the X is starting to act as if it's out of gas, new pump time. All using your videos only. You are the best.

Awesome video, thank you much. Two nitpicks: 1) Anti seize shouldn't be used on spark plug threads anymore. They now all come zinc plated to prevent any thread galling in aluminium heads. The anti seize can also cause over tightening of the plug. 2) Also, I would absolutely replace the orange intake manifold base seals and throttle body seal. After that long and with that much heat the material gets hard and doesn't seal up like it did, and can cause an intake air leak.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. When did they start doing the zinc plating? You’re not the first person to mention that. I feel like I am behind the times lol. And I do agree with you on the seals but down in FL seals seem to stay supple a lot longer. I check them out every time I pee them apart but they always look and feel good so I don’t replace.
@gpzjeffrey7974
@gpzjeffrey7974 3 жыл бұрын
Almost all spark plug manufactures use nickel or zinc chromate now, since virtually all automotive and motorcycle heads are aluminium. See www.driven2automotive.com/blog/why-you-shouldnt-use-copper-grease-when-installing-spark-plugs/ As far as the seals go,they may feel pliable, but how pliable now compared to brand new? The only real way to determine this is with a durometer test, and that's a bit of trouble and expense you don't need unless you either have a large stock of seals and the shelf life is a concern, or it is a hard to buy item. Seals, o-rings and gaskets are relatively cheap, therefore I always plan on replacing them, unless you recently did before, and after careful inspection they look and feel brand new... no nicks, sticky spots, discoloration, flattening, still pliable, etc. Remember, with elastomers its age, heat, ozone and UV that cause them to degrade. But take what I am saying as you will. Professionally I'm a mechanical engineer that manages large scale maintenance programs at an industrial plant...and have been turning wrenches as an amateur for 35 years or so. I really do appreciate the video, as I'm about to perform this task on my 2008 Xterra at 135K miles...I'm behind on the maintenance but it is still running perfectly. Quick question: is it easier to get to the cam position sensor with the intake off?

In no small part thanks to this video, I knocked this out today. It only took me a solid 4 hours, but at least 1 of those hours was a bit of existential anxiety after I couldn't find a bolt that was hidden underneath the bracket underneath that wiring harness. To my surprise, everything powered up and ran, no bolts were lost, and 5 out of 6 spark plugs were in predictably old but nominal shape. Number 6, on the other hand, was oily. Guess that's where that pint of oil every six months is going... A small note to anyone attempting this: If it wasn't obvious, you will use every kind of extension imaginable. I had a 1/4" and 3/8" drive, flex head and not, and 3, 6, and 9 inch extensions. You may need normal-ass crescent wrenches to help bust loose some of the particularly stubborn bolts. Likewise, a flex head in 10 and 12 millimeter make a whole lot of things way easier.

Thanks for video..... Just replaced plugs on my 2006 Frontier 4.0 I only loosen the plastic intake plenum and just lifted it up maybe an inch or so It was actually still kinda on the studs on one side. I did NOT remove the throttle body. The whole job probably took me an hour for all six plugs and I'm just a shade tree mechanic at best.

My 2009 Xterra is at about 89,000. I will have to make the decision in a bit to change it myself or trust that someone else will do the job better than me. I am not experienced but I am patient and believe I can do anything. That has gotten me very far. With that job being so long it also makes me think someone else won't take their time and do the quality work it takes and I should do it anyway. I haven't made up my mind yet but if I do your video will be a massive help to me. Thank you.

Thanks for posting this. My '10 Xterra is due for plugs, and seeing this is a big help. I wonder what engineer thought it was a good idea to block the plugs in with the upper intake? ah well, at least the plugs don't have to be changed often, and once the intake is out of the way it's a straight shot at those three plugs. I used to have a 1st Gen x and the drivers side three plugs were a huge pita to get to on the vg33, the #6 especially required lots of profanity to get out, and even more to get it back in! the vq doesn't look so bad in comparison.

Great video. Thanks a ton for the effort! Gonna attempt this in a few days thanks to your video. And, atta boy for dealing with all the haters in a professional way. Just trying to do things correct...... I have an 06' Xterra manual, original owner. Thought this was done at scheduled mileage and come to find out it was not. My fault. 145k on original plugs, oops! no miss fires but definitely lacks power it once had and reduced MPG. I do pull (pop up, rzr4) so I went with OEM plugs, $84 from dealer (Standard type:PLFR5A-11). After reading about the throttle body comments I will attempt to change the plugs without removing the intake, mainly because I do NOT want to have to deal with throttle body codes or manually correcting that issue with timers and stop watches, confidence low with that one. Qu: if I do decide to remove the intake can I keep the throttle body attached? you removed it in your video. I want the least to do with that as possible. Thanks again for all your effort
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy 7 жыл бұрын
+Erich ariZona thank you!! And yes you can leave it on but the potential for throw codes comes when you take the power connector out of the sensor. Which (if you remove the intake) you will have to do.
@Mike.D.843

Ry the car guy question related to this: when I looked at mine contemplating doing this job, I was thinking that the throttle body should be able to be separated from the intake without disconnecting anything and just left sitting there. is there any reason why that would not be possible? care would have to be taken working around it of course, but this method should eliminate the possibility of throwing codes for the TB, or having to do a relearn, as long as I am not missing something.

Are all years of the Nissan Xterra the same in terms of the obstructions to the removal of the passenger side bank of plugs. I have a 2008 Xterra and I am eventually faced with the plug change procedure. I have seen other videos and some comments have indicated that individuals have managed to swap out plug #1 without all the dissasembly by creative use of small stubby ratchets and universals, rubber hose fittings and a creative rotation of the coil pack in such a way that it lifts out without massive parts removal. I would love to see how the Nissan dealerships really to the plug swap. Can anyone confirm this?
