90% of the parts you remove don't need to be removed, you're doing way too much work! remove the throttle valve, the hose underneath and loosen a hose on the additional water pump as a drain for the water. I've changed it twice this way
A mechanic is currently changing mine. Dealer wanted 2400 parts and labor, bought the parts (thermostat and water pump) for 800 dlls plus coolant. Turns out the thermostat had a leak for a while. Every time I’ll go to jiffy lube they’ll ask if I wanted coolant. I had a slow leak all this time and didn’t know about it. My car is a 2018 VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI. Just putting this out there. Btw found a mechanic who did it for 300 dlls

Good info, thanks! I have a US Passat TDI GLS, purchased in March 2022 with 140,000 miles. It is in good condition, but needed some things fixed. It lived in TX and TN and is now in NE Ohio. In the summer it got a full coolant flush, drain, fill, run till at full temperature with tap water (our water is very clean) 2 times, then same process with distilled water, then filled with spec Ravenol concentrate coolant from Blauparts. I did not take any special steps to burp system, just checked it every few days, it needed a little topping off, but thats all. Heater was working. Thinking back it did not seem that hot. Temp gauge got up to say 120, again in hindsight I now know that is low. Now outside temps are near 35F/5C, and temp gauge is only going up to 90F. So am I looking at replacing the thermostat? Any input would be appreciated.
@aaron___6014 Жыл бұрын
Thermostat. Same thing with mine. As soon as the temp went down to 40F the cars temp gauge would no longer read 190.

in fact in most of these cars if you have the luxury of engine hoist it is a lot safer and convenient to pull out the whole motor as they were built that way in the first place. however we don't all have the luxury

$860 at a dealer in Chicagoland. 2012 VW Jetta TDI Wagon. I like the vehicle, but it seems like most of the maintenance is emissions and electrical, which I've never encountered on my previous Japanese cars. As much as I like the driving and comfort/convenience I won't buy another German car after this.

my first time ever using a shop instead of working on the car myself vw managed to misdiagnosis their way into a new thermostat which then proceeded to leak so they had to pull it all apart again. thermostat labor twice for free and they managed to put a ratchet in my radiator that visit as well requiring a brand new radiator. by the time they finished fucking up i had 90% of a new cooling system.. dealerships can be pretty bad

You should see how bad the emissions system is to work on, deleting it the easy way without having to drop the subframe involves unbolting one axle at the trans and then sawzall the shit out of the dpf mounting plates and pipes till it fits out without dealing with the subframe and a new alignment.. I blew my turbo post delete and replacing the turbo was not all that crazy of a job once the emissions bs was out of the way
