I would like to say a massive THANK YOU for putting this very informative video together (and the other timing belt videos aswell). I have watched them all several times over which really helped me successfully replace my timing belt, rollers/idlers, tensioner, water pump, studs and auxillary belt on my Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI PD engine. Admittedly aided by Haynes and free online workshop manual but with the combination of your videos, I was completely confident and got the timing spot on 0° without any VCDS. Keep up the great work and you have helped both me and so many more people save money and ensure that the work was correctly done being difficult to trust other people and some dealerships to do the job thoroughly with correct torque.

Nice Video. Changed cambelt on a Chrysler Sebring 2.0 CRD with VW engine. Was a bit harder, because the cambelt is sideways and the crankshaft was very hard (i really mean very hard) to turn, but at the end its done. Thank you for this video!

Great vid tutorial with clear steps. BIG THX. When the bumper off, it is a good idea to replace the bulb with a fog lamp. One work and save time for future. The roll pins should also be replaced with new ones, as seen in the timing belt kit already with thread glue.

This is a marvelous video. I was scared in the beginning as I saw how to change the belts but your video showed how easy it actually is even if a lot of stuff around has to be taken care of in order to access the belts. You are talking about 4x13mm bolts removed and insert the supporting bolts to slide the bumper off. What are the dimensions of the pipes on the supporting bolts? I'd like to get them first and then disassemble the car rather than comming to the bumper, making measures, rushing to the DIY and continue afterwards

All done no problems, my car is a jeep patriot which has the same vw/audi diesel engine but in the front wheel drive transverse position, a little tricky to work around the engine mount which i couldnt remove due to lack of space but other than that it went well, thanks again

hectorc01 Thank you :) Diesel pump is on the back of one of the cams, so is locked when you lock the cam. As for the rusty look, Dave thinks, it's the belt wearing that gives it that colour.

Great video guys....just remember if using torque to yield tension (torque and degrees to tension a bolt) then you MUST replace that bolt next time around , it can not be stretched twice.

I have another better video on cambelt for this engine with all necessary torques, but it's in Passat where the engine sits sideways. When you fit new belt, it has to be stretched properly along camshafts and then to the right down to crankshaft. If you just fit it as it is, then when it starts turning - timing won't be spot-on.

Thanks :) It depends what engine you have in your Caddy. Check my other videos for VW cambelts. I use thread lock only on tensioner nut. One mechanic advised me not use it on anything that goes into engine block, because it gets cooked there and it may be hard to get out afterwards, especially studs that don't have heads.

@wheelsandmotors Hi, I've watched fair few videos of yours, and I must say great job! Really on point, nicely shown and explained all the way from bolt type to end of the process! Now to my issue :D I have same engine, 2010 plate Avant A6, and I've noticed some grinding noise when I rev the car as the revs are coming back to idle. My clutch kit and DMF has been just changed, and Cambelt kit was done few thousand miles ago with previous owner (I do have full vehicle history and documentation). The only thing I dont see being changed is water pump. So I am thinking, could it be the water puimp that is making that grinding noise or something else? If anyone could advise ASAP please, cuz I'm paranoid to drive car like this in case it's something to do with belts etc..I wouldn't like to destroy my beloved Audi :)

That was a big question for me, because even manual doesn't mention that. They have torque values even for bottom cover bolts! :) I went into one respectful VW garage - they said it's 15Nm for both studs.

I hate when that happens, common problem. Try carefully use nail puller, if plastic ball-shaped handle slips off the thread - find a metal nut (Halfords) that fits on that thread and use nail puller again. That's what I do anyway, and I always keep that little nut together with my cambelt tool set

Hi guys, super video, very well explained. I watched it because I've just had timing belt and water pump changed on a slightly newer A6 2.0TDi (2010 facelift version) and have now got a problem with the fan coming on all the time the engine is running - whether hot or cold. I was watching to see whether any part of the cooling system was dismantled in the timing belt job, as this fan issue started immediately afterwards. Never had the problem before. The garage (Audi main dealer) told me the DPF sensor was faulty - and that this was causing the fan problem - and having paid for that job the fan is still running all the time. Would you have any idea whether Audi would have taken front end off completely rather than using those clever extendor bolts as you used? I'd love to have some ammunition for when I go back to them on this - any help greatly appreciated. People like you are a blessing for DIY car mechanics - I didn't take this job on, but I've done other stuff on my old 2002 BMW 530i which I'd never have tried without guidance from videos online. None of them were as good as yours :-)

Thanks for nice words, Steve :) That car in the video didn't have a DPF - it was 2005 car. Don't really know what to advise on your issue.. I don't suppose dealership would get whole front off for a cambelt change - it's a waste of time disconnecting all those pipes and connections, and time is money.Even workshop manual says to use those bolts.. maybe try to speak to independent vw mechanic/garage. Unfortunately, I'm not that clever as I might look in my videos :)

the newer a6 has a particulate filter to reduce carbon through exhaust system and every now and again it heats up to 1000 degrees to burn off carbon inside and fans come on to blow away fumes. the car is programmed to do this , so don't worry.

What grease was used to help install the water pump?? As i know some grease types aren't good for rubber.

This is very good point! People like to blame water pumps and say that it's VAG's weak point. But in reality - it's just a grease eating seal. Following one of the comments (and from practical experience) I would say now - there's no need for grease, just make that seal wet with coolant - and it will not leak. I wish I could change this point in this 5 year old video.

I have an impact driver that looks like yours and was thinking of getting an impact wrench as my impact driver is too weak for anything. I live in England myself... So Hello from England to you too :)) That video is like 5 years old, I had to watch it again to remember that we actually had a power tool there :) Yeah, that was Dave's tool and I can't say much about it. I have progressed since too have have some power tools as well - I have some crazy 900Nm DeWalt that is a bit bigger than that from the video. I suppose it all depends what kind of bolts/nuts you want to work with. I had to buy strong one, because I had to undo one really tight bolt in the middle of a crankshaft of Ford Galaxy, and till now it will do and undo any bolt for me, has 3 power settings to go easy on weaker ones. It's a bit bulky though.. They only get better when they "run-in". Best to have advice from tool shop guy.. If he's decent.

Something you didn't make clear (or maybe I missed it) was that the crankshaft locking tool has to engage with a hole in the block to ensure you are at TDC. Also, you should not need to remove the crankshaft lock or turn the camshaft wheels to get the pins back in. If they don't go in easily at the same time after the two rotations then the timing is out. One last thing, where you say to set the bolts central in the slots, actually it's better to set them to the left of the slot as they move right when the timing belt is tensioned. Having said all of that, great video which shows a huge amount more than the haynes manual does!

Apart from the bolts to the left, which is actually very good hint - saves a lot of hassle. But I only got it recently and regret that didn't mention it in any of my videos.

Having just done this job yesterday (luckily on an engine I had removed so plenty of access!) I can confirm that the crank locking tool I used on the 1.9 TDI PD engine works on the 2.0 TDI PD too - mine was the one with the mark on the tooth not between them. I also noticed that the tensioner pointer moves quite a bit when tightening the nut. I'm assuming that it's where it ends up that matters...

I hold pointer in position by 6mm allen while tightening that nut. It must be done while engine is cold. With hot engine or running engine - it's all over the place.

I gathered from the video that the slots are there so the belt can 'find' the position of even tension on both sides. If that's not what they are for, and the timing is critically dependent upon having the same position for each pulley relative to the slots, why have the slots there at all?

The point of having them there - to be able to align timing perfectly by having the ability to move actual camshaft in relation to the outer sprocket.

Some pulley must be not turning properly. There can be few things to blame - AC compressor, power steering pump, alternator, tensioner or some guide roller.. Check them individually. Check my channel, I have a playlist for A6 - I have video about compressor, alternator, just belt, don't have anything about power steering though.. :( Tensioner can be removed by removing bolt from the back. I don't have that car anymore, so can't play with it.. Hope your problem will be sorted.

Hi guys great video Need some help please before I could lock my cams as I lent my tool out my son had remove the belt can the cams had moved now when I put new belt and rotate motor on crank pully it locks up, think it's a vavle... How do I reset timing

I would lock it first without the belt - cams and crankshaft, but don't do full turns, because your valves will stick into cylinders.

I drive an audi a6 3.2 Quattro O5 and it's in good condition with 90.000 miles and it drives smoothly but as I slow down to turn or stop it's fine but when I press the gas and it gets up to 20mph the car begins to shake for a brief moment until I excelarate past 20mph would that be my timing belt?

+Joe Marin Could be - but, if I'm not mistaken, in your car instead of belt, you have chains. They last longer, but they stretch with time, that causes these problems.

My a6 c6 2.7 , makes a sound when i turn it on , my mechanic told me that might be this timebelt . In how many km shoud it be replaced , and did you have the same saund when u turn it on

I didn't have the sound, I replace it regularly. If I remember correctly, for 2.0tdi of that time timing belt should be replaced every 100.000km or 5 years whichever comes first. Newer engines have longer intervals.

Great Video. I intend to replace my cambelt and water pump next weekend on my 2008 A6 C6 2.0L BRE engine. As it will be the car’s third cambelt I intend to replace the tensioner stud, as I don’t have a stud extractor, I intend to use the two nut removal solution, are the nuts M8? Any further advice would be appreciated? One of my concern is that I cannot find information on what torque to use in putting the studs into the engine block, any ideas? Should I use thread lock on the threads that go into the engine block? Note I asked a garage mechanic and they suggested 20 Nm?

I asked few mechanics about torque for stud, they said 15Nm. I have done few cambelts by now, - always do them at 15Nm. Another advice - I wouldn't put threadlock on the end of stud that goes into engine block, otherwise when it gets cooked by hot engine, it will be difficult to replace it next time. I have another video with same engine, but on Passat B6, have a look - we replace studs there.

Just doing a final review that I have all the information for doing the cambelt this weekend, but cannot find information on what torque to do the idler pullies (Nut and Bolt), any ideas what value to use?

I did download your PDF and look at it as well as your WWW site again today but could see the torque setting for the idlers nut and bolt, perhaps I need an eyesight test? I going to do the idler nut to 20nm + 90 degrees and the idler bolt to 90Nm, not sure if that is OK?
