Excellent DIY video my friend !!!!!! Clear, concise, easy to understand, short and to the point, excellent camera positioning and audio level. What I really love is that there were no stupid comments, profanity, dawdling, shaky camera or trial and error steps (except for the bottom air cleaner housing, which was totally OK) Kudos to you and all the best from Montreal Canada. You have given me the confidence I needed to go ahead and change my own starter instead of bringing it to the local mechanic.

Worked great for replacing my starter on my 2000 Camry! I've never done a major car repair, so it took a bit more than two hours. For newbies, word of advice: make sure you have the 14mm socket, because many socket wrench sets (especially the cheaper ones) don't have it. Make sure you have a socket wrench extension. Also, you'll need a 12 mm regular wrench to remove/tighten the power line bolt, as that's a super tight space. Last thing - make sure the air box cover clicks in in the back before tightening the latches on the front. Thanks again for a great video!

just to follow up and let all your subscribers to know; i just changed mine this morning. with your detail where everything is and needed to be removed. everything from set-up to clean up and the first test start (crank) took less than an hour and a half. could've shaved off a few minutes if i didn't struggle with the bolts trying to fit the new one in, not wanting the strip the thread. anyway, thank you again. your step by step explanation just makes life easier for everyone. keep up the good work.

At the moment there are about three KZbin videos up dealing specifically with 97-01 Toy Cams, and this one is the best, because it shows everything from start to finish--granted the finish is just a review of what needs to be done to put everything back together. It's a relatively simple job, but if you're not a mechanic and you don't have much experience, this is quite important. Coupla things I learned that weren't mentioned: WD 40 helps, but not always. A breaker bar is VERY helpful if your bolts are stuck, especially for the bolt in the back side of the starter, because space is cramped so it's hard to get enough leverage. I got a breaker bar for $10 at Harbor Freight, which I figure is good enough, as I'm not a pro. I'll prolly never use it again unless someone tries to car jack me or something...lol!

I literally just did this on a 99 V6. I did not remove the cruise control actuator. You can do this and work around those cables, but why deal with the aggravation? Also, my starter was stuck in place. Nothing a 2x4 and s hammer couldn't fix. Definitely a job easy enough for a diy'er and this video does an excellent job demonstrating what needs to be done. On a different note, you can order parts online and then pick them up 30 minutes later at your local parts store and save money. I used Advanced Auto. The starter was $115. You enter a code that they usually post on the top of the page, and I saved $25. Then there's a $25 core charge. The entire repair cost me under $100. So check your local auto part chain's website and you might be able to save some money. Anyway, awesome video!!

Excellent video. Very well explained step by step instructions and easy to follow. Currently I have a 1998 Camry with 140K on the car. This morning I was trying to start it but the starter only click. After I came back from breakfast I jumped the car incase the battery wasn't charged. I tried to start it but only click once again. I waited for about a minute or so to start it but it cranked very little and clicked again. I remember my brother hitting a starter with a hammer on the starter bendix and it worked on the cars he worked on. So I did the same thing to the Camry starter and it worked. I hope that it will continue to work, but if it doesn't I will know how to replace to stater. Thank you very much for the video.

Question. Does this car also have a high rev after the battery is disconnected, so that it needs resetting? I’ve seen a couple of videos where they say this happens so that the car needs to “relearn” to idle?! Seems here you didn’t have to relearn to idle. I have a 92 Camry I bought and replaced the battery with a new one and was wondering if this is the case on it. Or perhaps it’s an IAC issue. It seems to have a starter issue, so I can’t even try to do the relearn cause it starts intermittently, I have to try it like 10 times.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders 8 ай бұрын
Good morning ☕️ any update? You may need to use a larger ratchet and extension to get better leverage and a better position when loosening nut. You may also need to spray nut and bolts with PBlaster to weaken rust or corrosion buildup. Please keep us posted. Looking forward to 2024, many more helpful videos to come. 🧰

May only need to replace the Solenoid if it is going CLICK CLICK with no motor spin and battery runs headlights on high fine. In a 1981 Toyota pickup I repaired a Solenoid. There are two copper metal contacts a conductive thing presses against when the Solenoid is activated. One of them was mostly worn away and the other was like new. So I put the like new one soldered to where the mostly worn out one was and made a new copper contact with metal from a water pipe and it worked fine after that. Original solder was very high temperature so I had to cut it.

Just took mine out. That was really easy. Didn't see any need to unscrew the cruise control actuator thing. There were two or three things from the air filter plastic case which clipped around it's cable but they just pushed off easy. Copper contacts in Solenoid looking mostly gone at least one of them. I will replace those. May the force be with you!

I have a 98 Camry with 230,000 miles. Every time I want to start it, I have to tap the starter with a small hammer and then it starts right up. I’m guessing I’ll have to replace it, but do you know if the starter can just be repaired instead of replaced?

I need your help. Most of the times my car starts normally, but once in a while, once in about 5 times, the stater is spinning and mashing a slippery noise and it doesn’t engage, And then when I try again, one or two times, it works! I have tried different starters, and they all do the same thing, and then I have ruled out the stater as a problem and I now suspect something else like a relay, the ignition switch or other, causing the starter not receiving enough power maybe once in a while to deploy completely the pignon gear of the bendix to engage the big gear by the flywheel to crank the motor properly. Can that starter slipping and slipping turning noise be caused by not enough power getting it, making it turn but not fast enough to push the pinion gear completely out once in a while and therefore not engaging? But if it was the cause, why would it engage the next time or second next time? I have ran out of explanations, causes, reasons and ways to fix it, please somebody, help me out, thanks so much!
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. We appreciate you sharing your experience. Since you have ruled out the starter, let’s focus on other causes. It’s very possible that you have intermittent voltage coming out of your battery. If your battery is brand new, this is unlikely however if your battery is 5-10 years old, it’s more likely. By chance do you had any type of aftermarket electronics added to the electrical system since you have owned it? Examples would be: * New stereo system/speakers * New alarm system * New horn * New Aftermarket headlights or taillights These are just a few items that can cause spontaneous behavior within the electrical system if not installed 100% properly. These added items to the electrical system can possibly have loose connections or the wrong wiring installed. We recommend inspecting your starter relay and fuse inside your engine compartment in the fuse box. Any type of moisture, rust, or corrosion on the electrical leads can cause havoc to the electrical current. Please keep us posted, us DIY’ers need to stick together. 😎👍

I changed the starter and when I put the battery back in it was starting to spark. Do you think I put the starter in wrong??
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. What exactly was sparking, was it the starter itself or the battery? If it’s the starter, you may have the wiring connections reversed and if it’s the battery, you will want to ensure that you put the red cable on the positive lead & the black cable on the negatively lead.
