I ended up doing this job without having to take out the main fan or the power steering pump. That could certainly help you get more space to work in, but just taking out the electric fan and loosening the 3 bolts on the power steering and wiggling it around was enough for me to take out the water pump. I also found it easier to remove the lower hose from under the vehicle. Just wear eye protection and watch out for coolant splashing on you. This guide did help me, so I appreciate it, but if you’re okay working in a cramped space, you can skip a couple steps.

I'm getting ready to replace the water pump and thermostat on my '98 XJ. I like the way you setup the camera to show each step of the process. Not too many people do that and it makes it a lot easier for those of us that are watching. Thank you!

Great vid, I just did my 2000 XJ. I did not have to remove the power steering pump or loosen the lower bracket bolt. I just loosened the pump bolts so it was moving slightly. Pump slid right out and slid right back in. I did have the thermostat housing off though!!!! Pretty simple job, thanks for the video!!

Thanks for posting this I did my waterpump and thermostat last night because of a leak Later saw that the leak was actually the damn rad cap 345,000kms on the jeep , needed the refresh anyway , and the heat works 10x better Cheers

thanks for the guide. it helped me out. i skipped the mechanical fan and airbox removal and had minimal problems as a result. i used the same milwaukee ratchet, so i didn't have to fight the fan for swinging space. a side note, tighten the water pump pulley screws (x4) as much as you can, then when the serpentine belt is installed, you can finish tightening them. don't forget.

Warning if you have 1988. .This procedure will not work, as the power steering pump and adjuster are totally different, and must be removed differently.....Thanks for posting and taking the time to do this very good. The adjust is is opposite and on the bottom of the pump.

I have a 2001 4.0 Grand Cherokee that will overheat when i drive it. It idles around 210 and won’t overheat but once i take it for a drive for around 20 minutes it will spike suddenly and have to turn the car off. It will spew out the radiator cap and the coolant reservoir will start bubbling. The head is brand new on it with no gasket leaks. I’ve replaced the thermostat, radiator, and heater core so far. Going to replace the water pump today but if it isn’t that what else would you think is wrong with the car? It runs perfectly fine other than the overheating issue.

How did you know how tight to make the belt when you put it back on?
@SneakySolidSnake
@SneakySolidSnake 2 ай бұрын
everywhere online says 1/2 inch of deflection or 90 degree twist: at longest belt length. half inch of deflection seems more reliable if you're swole. just use measured strength equal to how much you used on the hardest bolt to unfasten. 90 degree twist is effortless regardless of tension for me, i figure it's the same for any moderately strong adult man.

While it's always a good idea to follow the factory specs when I've replaced my XJ's water pump, which I've had to do a few times over the last 500+k miles, I've always tightened the bolts to good and snug. That's always worked well for me.
