Brilliant! I am going to repair the mortar on two walls of my house and this series of videos has been terrific learning. I wish I had had such good tuition 35 years ago when I restored a garage where we used to live.!

I'm making a lime mix for a house this week I'm looking to do 1 part 3.5 2 part grit sand 1 part grey sand does this sound correct? I'm also wondering how long after does it turn green hard ? , This will be my first like pointing and I've watched every one of your videos thanks

Excellent video. I will be repairing the fireplace exterior mortar on our lake side cottage (in Haliburton, Ontario Canada) summer high temps are 30C and winter cold temps are -35C. The granite rocks are stained from the previous mortar. This fireplace was made in the mid 1950's from hand split granite. I have two questions, 1 - I assume this would not be a lime mortar due to the 'young' age of our fireplace. 2 - what is the best way to remove the stain from the rocks? I was thinking of a small sandblasting prior to replacing the grout. Regards.

Hi, The mortar used would most like be of cementitious origin. A way to test would be to get some table vinegar and splash it onto the mortar. If it fizzes and gets excited then it will be a lime based mortar. You can get brick acid from your local builders merchants. Brush it on the stains and wire brush after a few minutes. This will remove your mortar stains from the granite. Hope this helps?

What is the Average cost to lime repoint per square metre of stone.? I was told by someone about £80. does that sound about right?
@dportercontracting9974
@dportercontracting9974 Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, the price you have been given is about right. It's about double the cost of cementitious pointing as you have to take into consideration the backpointing aspect of lime mortar pointing too.

D porter Contracting, what time of the year ( n the UK) would you say is the cut off point for re- pointing Cement
@dportercontracting9974
@dportercontracting9974 Жыл бұрын
Hi Pickpocket for hire. Once the temperature is heading down towards 5 degrees, put the pointing trowel down. Chromium salts have a tendency to bleed from the mortar in cooler weather. If frost gets into the curing mortar then it will have a drastically reduced lifespan.

When do you choose to use cement vs lime. I know your an fan of lime so wondered y this job is different? Is it a cost thing?
@dportercontracting9974
@dportercontracting9974 2 жыл бұрын
It depends entirely on what the client wants from the project. This house is a rental so the landlord was after a quality job on a lower budget. Cementitious repointing is cheaper than lime pointing due to the lime requiring more labour time to get it on the wall with the likes of backpointing, prior to the finished lime pointing.

Can't quite remember what mix this was matey. If you have a look at part 2, I'm sure it will mention the mix we used. It was the last cement pointing job we ever did..

I see walls everywhere that have been repaired and the pointing is always white and it sticks out like a sore thumb I think they’re getting council workers to fix them rather than professionals

Unfortunately so MikeDe. Although you will have a decent amount of time to enjoy the fruits of your hard graft and labours until then. Next time, try using lime and it'll last way over 100 years. Your great grandchildren can repoint it then.

@@dportercontracting9974I just realised your using cement this time I think? If never seen you use cement before, cement on stone noooo😂 I did my house last year and i used my trowel handle to scrape then taped with brush then brushed, turned our great, this time on someone else's house i scraped with knife as you did here then tap with brush and brush clean. It using a knife any worst then using my trowel handle? I had some hair line cracks this time sure it was from sun tho, if been misting the wall daily for 3 days to let carbonate then let dry, my house the NHL 3.5 dried by best day but no cracks? Not sure what's going on

@@mikede2331 Hi again Mike. I find the knife works better and lasts longer over consecutive jobs than the trowel handle. As regards the cement pointing, I no longer use cementitious mortars on a repoint. We just solely use lime now for the good of the building. This customer was renting the property out and wanted to keep the cost of the project to a minimum so cement was used as the application can be done in one pass with cement based mortar.

@@mikede2331 When you come to scratch off the finish mortar, some hairline cracks can be present but they usually only run millimetres deep into the finish mortar. If they run to right through the finish mortar then it can be a sign that the backing mortar was too dry at application of the finish mortar. The backing mortar wants to be damp but not soaking upon application. I usually work on an area of 3'x2' when pointing up, then move onto the next bit and mist the background.
