How to repot a Miltonia orchid: I'm repotting Miltonia guanabara into a bonsai dish!

This week Plant Lovers....working through my spring to do list! It's time to repot my Miltonia guanabara which is definitely making a break for the hills! After seeing another local grower's sensational specimen grown outdoors under cover all year in a large shallow dish I decided to reach for the nearest artisan made bonsai dish and give it a go! I love that. I like that. I’m afraid I’m a little to warm for those. I have a Miltoniopsis and it’s really struggling. Due to fires, we had to evacuate two times. Both times I had to leave my orchids behind in triple digit weather for 11 days the first time and 12 the next time. Two years later it’s still struggling. I love your bonsai tray, that will look beautiful when that blooms.

One of the best uses for Bonsai pots I've seen and a lovely pot style for this orchid too. Love the brassy watering can as well! Would the amount of old 'dead' roots have served a sort of anchoring function for the plant as it gained size in nature I wonder? The bigger it gets the more anchor it might need for its weight, whilst the newer roots supply it with the nutrient transfer. Not really relevant in cultivation but it might be of use in the wild.

Probably! I guess the old roots dry and retain their 'glue' so they would anchor the plant until they ultimately decomposed?

A there it was, the Miltonia repot! This might become a large plant pretty soon. Mine did take off at this size.

Bonsai pot/ dish 👍,what a great find 😍. I need to repot ( in spring) my Oncidium Aloha Iwanaga x Oncidium Varicosum ,it's a climber. This idea of bonsai dish potting gives me hope for getting fuller, bigger plant without cutting off pseudobulb every 2 years. Thank you for sharing this tip. Great repotting btw.👍😁🌸

That’s what that tiny beading is I found in my pots once I repotted a newer orchid for the first time. Fungi stuff you said 😅 I thought it was maybe mold or something.

That's one of the things I don't like about many of the Miltonia, the sprawling habit (the other being that many of them smell of black licorice/anise). Milt. candida and clowesii are a little better behaved and smell more floral.
