I just bought a 450 Rancher. When I took it home to assemble the bar etc, I got ahead of the instructions and had to pry the side cover off as the chain brake was locked. Of course I couldn't get the cover back on.....took it to the dealer and they took it out back to reset the spring. I didn't watch. Then I went 3 hours away to tackle some trees blown over by hurricane Ian. My chain came off so I had to remove the side cover. I knew there was a procedure to follow. I forgot to release the brake, pried it off and was in a pickle without the ability to reset it. Steve, this video saved me a lot of grief using the first method you showed, even though I had to return home with the problem . Even better, the cover was on with moderate tension on the nut. Pulling the brake handle back did it. How easy! Thanks Steve!

After running Stihl saws for years, recently bought a Husqvarna 550XP, after taking apart to do routine maintenance and cleaning, and reassembly makes me appreciate the simplicity of Stihls, won’t buy anymore Husqvarna. Stihl just makes it simple and easy, internal clutch is much easier to mount bar/chain, take apart/reassemble.

A cell phone and this video kept the day from being wasted for some friends clearing downed trees on a neighbor's lot today. I stopped to say hello, and they showed me the problem they had been fighting for an hour or so. I searched Steve's channel, and 10 minutes later, the saw was running. It can be done without the beer, which is a good thing, because, hey, there are chainsaws involved! I left, but heard later there were a few brews consumed after the loading, transport, and unloading. Thanks , Steve!

You should make a shorted version of this video where you shotgun two beers and then just get right to point. Cheers!

Steve, as a newbie to the world of chainsaws. I did EXACTLY what you described regarding the clutch cover removal. Used my Husqvarna Rancher 460 for the 2nd time this past weekend, did not check the chain tension on day 2 and lost the 24" chain that came with the chainsaw. (I was looking for an excuse to buy an Oregon chain 😎) I pried the cover off with a flathead. Purchased a new chain, installed it on the bar and sprocket and the damn cover wouldn't seet properly. I was prepared to take my new Husqvarna into the local shop for repair. I tell friends of mine constantly that any information that you need regarding product knowledge and how-to's - you can most likely find on youtube. I came back into the house after closing up the shop, sat down and decided I would try to find a video similar to the problem I was having. Yours was the first one that came up. Everything you described in the beginning of that video was spot on regarding my situation. I did just as you suggested and got it to mount flush. The doggone thing is working 100% now. Thank you very much for doing this video. You saved me from the walk of shame at the local repair shop.

Perfect. Thanks very much. I made the stupid move you mentioned..."Hmm...this cover won't come off...maybe I should pry it a bit..." Now, with your instruction, I was able to get it back on. Thank you Steve. I just used your technique on a '16 562XP...yep, some genius pulled the cover off with the brake engaged. He swears it was half-cocked and wouldn't release. He then used a screwdriver to persuade it off the rest of the way. I cleaned it out really good and reset it your way. It was super gooped up and acting like glue. It's still very cold here and I'm using winter weight bar oil, and not cutting any conifer. No pay raise, bonuses or any new tools for that guy until he pays it off...extra firewood cutting and hand splitting for him! :). You saved my bacon.

I took it to a shop where the mechanic said "I don't know if I can fix it, but I have to charge you $70.00 an hour with no guarantees." I walked out of his shop and ordered a new cover. I was going to try a crows foot and breaker bar...figured I'd do a search first. At least now I know what size to grab. Rarely have I had any luck putting one back on the case. What happens with these is more of a brake half engaging. The handle is halfway between locked and unlocked so you don't see it. If the cover hasn't been off in awhile or if you are working with dirty stuff you sometimes need a slight nudge with a screw driver to get the cover off. If you feel pressure, you stop and check the brake but we aren't prying the cover off, the half engaged brake snaps shut as the cover comes off. It's happened to me 3 times on 2 different ranchers. Love your videos, thanks for posting them.

Just sat here and explained to my wife how I’d screwed up my chainsaw... did it a year or two ago but couldn’t remember what I did to unload spring. Thank goodness for your channel!! Fixed in 2 min. (Is already spent 45 min in futility)

Holy cow! I feel like such an idiot. You just saved me from probably breaking my darn chainsaw because I couldn't get the cover back on. Wow. I never make that mistake again. Thank you so much man!!! Now if I could only get ahold of one of those cold Rainiers. You're awesome.

Steve, I put an hour into trying to reset the brake and thought I was local dealer bound but found your KZbin and went with the 7/16 wrench in the vise method and was back in business within minutes. Rainier's on me!

Outstanding easy to understand, could not get the side cover back on. I could see that the spring needed reset. followed the instructions and the brake reset allowing me to easily slide the side cover back on. This video saved me from taking it in to be fixed. Like I mentioned I could see the problem but did not know the fix. This saved me a of hassle and money. Thanks for a great video that was short and to the point!

Steve. I’ve had a helluva time getting the chain brake to reset. I watched a few vids but yours didn’t come up. I should have known to come here first, duh! None of the other ways worked but putting that wrench in my vice popped it right to unlock. Thanks for always being here with great advice and tricks!

I feel like I should send you money for this. I forced the cover off in turn locking the chain brake. Never messed with anything like this before. Did exactly what you said and it worked beautifully. Thank my man, I’m at least going to buy one of those sweet shirts.

Thank you so much man! I was having trouble getting the side piece back on, found your video after realizing the brake was engaged and used trick number 2 and pow! One second later, I've got my chainsaw back. Thanks again man!

Thanks Steve,I did figure out the brake was engaged and fought with resetting the brake trying every method other than the few you suggested. I walked away from it yesterday and will go back to it when I get home from work with confidence that I will have it reset in no time. The only problem with fixing it...…. is now I have to use it! Damn! CHEERS!

Steve's The Man. Exact fix (3 ways to do it, first one failed), for my Husq 450 I bought reconditioned with the brake already engaged. (Not good by reconditioning company.) Thanks, Man!
