I have a 3800 that has had a few clogging problems, but basically keeps chugging along. This video,and the accompanying one on refurbishing maintenance carts have saved me a lot of money. But... today I went to reset the chip on a refurbished cartridge, and the light flashed red, turned solid red, but never turned green. I followed a suggestion I found on line and opened the resetter (take the little printed strip off the back to expose two screws), intending to change the batteries. I took one battery out, then decided to just order another resetter from Ebay for $10.79. Then, on a whim, I put the battery back in and tried the resetter without its case, just the circuit board with long prongs sticking out. It worked! I have three old carts, and it did all three. Posting in case it might help anyone else. I thought it was easier to hod the prongs in contact with the chip using the circuit board without its case.

Jose Ive been following your videos and I've done oem refills thanks you so much saved loads of money. When i reset my waste cart I just use the chip resetter the same QE 589 CHIP RESETTER your using with out using a new cart and it all works and rests 100% thanks

Worked for me....using the same chip re-setter that I have been having trouble with in re-setting my 3880 OEM carts. Another quirk to try and figure out.

Mr. Rodriguez, I have an Epson SC P800 that said it had reached the end of its Maintenance tank life, so I did this little trick, that you showed us only it didn't work. I took the old cartridge out, emptied, cleaned it, reset it, placed the new cartridge in, took it out and placed the old one back in. The printer still says it has reached its life expectancy, even after it had been reset...green light and everything. Any thoughts?

there's a way to reset the maintenance cart without the 2nd cart. just reset the maintenance cart chip as you normally do, then remove it and replace with any T58 cart chip. Put the maintenance tank back. printer will give error message of course, but that will erase the memory. put the maintenance cart chip back, then the printer will read 100%.

Correct. Some of us will have extra chips as we are tinckerers but many do not. So the second Maint Cart routine is the recommended method. If you have two 3800/3880 you can continual!y swop the carts between the two. I have the 3880-3880 and P800 and thte e the same cart so imagine the possibilities.

Really wonderful thing you're doing for your community Jose... nice work. I'm wondering if I need to keep a pristine maint tank around between cleanings. Is there anything wrong with this: Remove full tank and reset with the gizmo Install the new tank Clean the original tank when you get some free time. When the second tank fills up, remove.. reset... and install the original tank. Actually... second question. Much of the way you speak and references you make lead me to believe you're a machinist or tool maker. Might this be the case? Hope I'm not intruding... thank you again for the good work you're doing.

Jose, hello. I found that I had to file down the plastic protrusion directly underneath the pins on the maintenance cartridge resetter that I purchased on Ebay. It worked fine after I filed down the plastic protrusion(spacer) directly underneath the pins. Without filing down the plastic spacer, I couldn't get the pins to make contact. Just curious if you had the same issue? I know you didn't mention that in the video so I'm guessing this is a one-off problem with this resetter that I purchased. I find your videos of great value and enjoy your manner of presentation.

What color is your resetter? The BLUE one does not require modifications.

@@cheo1949 The resetter is white or cream-colored. All the identifiers on the resetter are the same as the one you showed in the video. It came from a place called "colorfulworld printing" via Ebay.

Hi Jose, Thank you for your instructions. I have a refurbished from Epson, which was a replacement for mine which dropped black ink all over the print. This one does the same thing and it was filthy. After cleaning it still does it. Do you know of anyone who still fixes these in CA?

It very likely is the Black ink Switch valve causing the leaking of black ink. As to where to get it replaced? Can you even find parts?

Turn it off and unplug the printer for 30 minutes and power back on. A new never used maintenance cart should be recognized. If still cannot be recognized you will need to have it checked out at an EPSON Service center.

My maintenance cartridge is new, but the printer says it is full. I only installed it a couple of weeks ago. However, I just installed a new refilled ink cartridge and that's when the error message showed up. When I saw your video, i thought this might be my solution, but I'm not about to buy a resetter to fix this error.

If the chips were too low as in like 20-15% it will not work.

Hey Jose, I got the QE 589 resetter and some ink carts from clickinks. Ive first tried refilling my carts and resetting them where I get green lights but some show full, some show as empty with an x through the level column and some without an x. It would have a not full maintenance cart and come up needs replacement . I would reset but it would last a minute until the same message will appear. I tried replacing with some /not all, new carts that read empty. What do I have to do?

If the original chip was empty you can not reset them at all. They had to have been at least over 15 to 20% above empty. But are you saying you are trying to reset these carts from Clinkinks or original OEM ones?

+Luc Poi Yes most of the ink will be concentrated at the center and all over the very bottom of the cart's sponge. It will not be apparent when you just look at the top surface.Reset it and keep a close eye on it! Replace when you feel you need to.

Yes. The resetter is officially only for the maintenance carts. But they seem to rest the cart chips. If the levels are not under 15-20%.

Yes and No. It must be done only on older carts say before 2018 because they have done something to the chips on new versions. However I've also heard that LM LK and LLK can not be reset any longer. My older cars I have apparently still can be reset.

Hi Jose. Great and useful video that I was looking for a long time ago. Just one doubt with regards to the subsequent use of the brand new cartridge that you use to be able to reuse the used one. Have you got any issue with using the brand new one, since its id has been used for the old one? It would be great if you could show us how you refill used cartridges with new absorbent material for them to be reused. I am sorry if you have already uploaded a video with this, but I have not found.

+Carlos Badiola No at all. Remember that the printer driver can only remember ONE code. So once you reinsert the original one you reset, it erases the code of the unused one. There some people who may have a resetter that can reset the one cart without having to use the second cart trick. I have no clue what resetter they are using, but I do not have a problem doing it the way I demonstrated. It really is not a huge issue at all.

Where did you buy the hydrophyllic material? Is there a more specific name for it?

It was many years ago that found this. But you can use anything that absorbs water based liquids. Paper toweling is perfect. Remember these cartridges are open to the air so as long as it absorbs and prevents splashing it will work.

could i clean the cart now it is not full yet. maybee about 3/4 . and set it in the printer again. how does the chip messure that the cart is full? or will he find it clean than?

You can clean and exchange the insides whenever you want. Resetting only works when you first reset the one you just cleaned, then install ANOTHER cart in the printer and let IT record THAT chip code. The Printer will "FORGET" the original one...then one you reset to EMPTY. Now it will recognize IT and accept. You will always need a second cart to fool it. It remembers the Maintenance Cart Chip Code. But it can only remember ONE! So by install another cart, it will forget YOURS and will accept it and see it as empty. Assuming you did reset the chip waste ink level to zero.

Sorry but I do not. I would assume you would need the Adjustment Programs for it as well. Good luck finding that. Only the service tech have access to that. Unless you can find it in the "Gray" market

Biggest problem of these printers seems to be the changing mechanism (a valve) from Matte black to Photo black. So I print only Matte black since 4 or 5 years, because repair costs about 500 $. But even I print only with Matte black the Photo black is sucked out by the cleaning mechanism, so you have to chang this carts also. This is weird; bying a new (3rd party) cartridge knowing that it will be never used for printing but it will be empty nevertheless some time. In which society we are living?

Hello José, I have the same question as Julien Borbon below: "I tried to replace the maintenance cart like in your video, but I have a warning message: "Non-Genuine Maintenance cartridge installed". I tried to reset the old cart twice, but same message. The indicator of the cart is empty on the screen instead of a full cart with the new one. Any idea?" I first put a good maintenance cartridge in so the printer will recognize it, shut the printer off and put in an old cartridge that's been reset. I did get the green light with my resetter so I'm assuming it was reset. I've tried this with two old cartridges and both give me the warning " Non-Genuine Maintenance cartridge installed." I've probebly tried this six times and always get the same result. Any idea why the genuine Epson maintenance tank is not being recognized as an Epson tank? Thanks

The printer remembers the last serial number of the maintenance cartridge you had previously loaded. So you have to install another cartridge momentarily then remove that cartridge and then insert the one you just reset that's the only way that the cartridge will be accepted. You can do that or just simply by cartridges.

Thank you for the instructions, the new maintenance cart is in, but when I get ready to print, it wants to switch back to photo black (and it leaks) instead of staying on the Matte Black, which I switched it on and prefer anyway for printing my artwork. Tried it twice....it says "Ready" and when I push print, it then gets ready to switch back to Photo Black. Any ideas?

If your driver is defaulted to a glossy paper type it will always want to switch to PK. Make you to default the driver to the type you are most likely to print on. If you are experiencing leaking then you switch valve may be beginning to fail.

Yes. Sorry. When it comes to maintenance cart a full chip means a FULL maintenance and time to replace it. The chip starts empty and goes to full. The opposite to ink cart chips.

Easy. It sees the SAME original Unique Color ID number and remembers that it was empty and now it's magically full.

Hi Jose, I have now a FULL maintenance cartridge (dirty/empty), sad I didn't know the trick about the 15%, can I still use this wear out cartridge? or I have to buy a new one and just now start this 15% reset method? I have just purchased a resetter that comes with a chip, the seller told me to replace the original chip from the maintenance cartridge with the fake one so the print will "forget" and then back to the original chip (now reseted). I'm an amateur, poor soul, need help. Thanks

Two carts a re the best method. Buy one their are only $22 then reset the older one. Repack it. Insert the new one. Let it recognize it. Remove the new and reinsert the old one you just reset and repacked. DONE! The printer must see a new chip and it will "Forget" the previous one so when it sees it again it will except. It's not just about the "Level code but also the individual ID code EACH chip carries. That is NEVER overwritten. So i has to "See" a different Cart so it can forget the firs ID code and accept it again.

I've read about an "empty registration" thing (like if the printer knows forever the cartridge reached 0% and the resetter simply don't work) and people say because of this it shows a "non genuine carts" message... in any case, I'll purchase another original cartridge and will reset before 15% so it lasts forever. also, do you know a good refill cartridge? have you already tried the pistols one? sorry for the multiple help requests but you're simply a genius of the printing world.

You will need a new one regardless. So once you get it, reset the full one insert the new one, remove the new one and reinsert the old but reset one. It should accept it. If not then the chip could not be reset. Refillable Carts for the ASSUMED 3880 or 3800? www.precisoncolors.com

You need to buy the resetter they sell on eBay. Reset the one that's full. Open it. Empty and replace the insides with something absorbent anything will work and put it back together. Set it aside. You will now need a second cartridge because the printer has to see and record a different chip code before it will accept the original you reset. It only has enough memory from one single code so it will forget and delete the previous one when you insert a new cartilage so you can just use even a used one as long as it records a different code. Then it will accept the one that you reset because it has forgiven that previous particular code. Funny isn't it? I think I did explained it on the video.

That reset gadget kind of works. Somehow the printer recognizes and says this is not "genuine part..." As a result the display doesn't show an empty tray after a reset. It warns you that the capacity may be different than oem part...but doesn't prevent you from printing....

Of course it works. You have to do it correctly as I explained here.You need TWO maintenance carts. You reset the one you repack. BUT....You install another one. The printer will record THAT chip ID code and forget the the one you originally prepped and reset. Now you remove the second cart and install the one you reset and repacked and it will accept it and report it as being fully empty. DONE!

I didn't try to unplug as someone suggested. What the display says is irrelevant for me as long as I can print. It's not like that indication meant anything. It said full when it was only 1/3 full

Let me take a look at the services manual. The door trips a switch when it closes. You will have to come up with a piece of something to trip that. The ink cover door also does the same thing and you use a piece of plastic to fool the printer to think the lid is closed when you use those double sized refillable carts.

I have no idea how to even begin to help you. There are a bunch of error codes and GOOGLE is really your best friend to narrow down the problem. That is a production type printer using special inks that we really do not deal with here. So locate the error code and goggle it along with the model name and number and you should be able to find some help.

Just so you know you don't need the new tank if you just pull it out reset it put it back in it won't change . What I do and works everytime is while turned on remove tank n reset then pull power out of printer leave 30secs too 1min power back up without tank once rebooted put tank back in done full tank. This method also works on totally empty ink carts below 5% that supposibly can't be reset but I do it all the time with zero ink level reset back too full. The printers memory is volatile and will forget with our power enjoy guys.

Good to know. Siince I do have extras and have 3800-3880 and P800 which share the same tank. For me it takes me about 30 seconds. Because I already have reset extras at the waiting. As long as I insert another cart i have already reset in that slot it will take it readily. Repack the one I took out and reset it till needed for the next printer.

+Jose Rodriguez no worries hope it works for everyone I'm not sure what firmware I'm using but I don't think the firmware could change volatile memory. I just tried your needle trick for oem inks mod seemed to work well thanks for that. I would like to get a copy of the 3880 firmware and have a go at reprogramming it to too not write too chips not sure if it's possible yet or what side effects would be caused . But this will be a project I'll look into possibly even try a jtag method. Only prob with jtag is it's not somthing everyone would benefit from as it's involves soldering onto control board . My preference would be a modification to a firmware I could upload to printer all depends on the security level Epson use

+Jose Rodriguez yeah I've had a quick look at firmware and looks like the best most unsure version was the original firmware not sure if this version had any issues but normal these updates are more often than not security fixes that don't really help the end user . Not sure if the firmware can be downgraded at all but if I find anything useful I'll let you know

They are only able to reset Printers carts like 2100-2200 / R1900 / R2440 / R2880 and older R280 through R380You need to get the Specific one I indicate in my EPSON Refilling VideosQE- 589 Chip Resetter- look it up on EBAY,. There are many resellers. Thgis the one for T58 Carts and Maintenace Carts. You must also follow the TWO CART process I show in the video for it work. Just resetting the chip will not work.

I bought the resetter on Ebay. Followed the instructions and the Epson pro 3880 sent error message: Non-genuine maintenance cartridge installed. I repeated the procedure and got same message, At present I am just using the new maintenance cart.

+Robert Harper Sorry to hear that. That can happen specially with the newer 3880. Since it works perfectly on the older 3800. I wonder if there is an option to ignore that message?

+Jose Rodriguez Another possibility is this. Are you using refillable carts or OEM. Resetting the Maintenance Cart, at least on the 3800 will only work if you are running on OEM ink carts.I could not do this on my other 3800 when it was working, with refillable inkjetfly carts as the controller chips that the refillables used automaticallt kept the Maintenance Cart Chip as being 1005 empty all the time.

So you need to buy a new maintenance tank and the gadget to reset the old one?/ ok not sure what the point, just buy a new tank...

You can use ANY other maintenance cart. I happen to have a new one to use in the resetting trick

I am very confused. Why would I buy a brand new maintenance cart just to go and reuse the old one? I'm racking my brain here. I only have one maintenance cart. I thought the idea is to reuse it over and over. If I have to use a brand new cartridge to reset the old one, I'm just going to use the brand new cartridge. LOL

Simple, Because the printer need to see a NEW ID code number. You will only use that knew one to make the printer record that number and FORGET the previous one ( the one you reset and repacked ). It's just a trick to fool the printer into accepting your reset and repacked one. You can not expect the printer to accept your reset one because it will see it as the SAME cart that you reset to empty. That's a NO-NO. By inserting the New one and allowing the printer to accept it, if FORGETS the previous code as it only has memory room for ONE code.

I have no idea how to even begin to help you. There are a bunch of error codes and GOOGLE is really your best friend to narrow down the problem. That is a production type printer using special inks that we really do not deal with here. So locate the error code and goggle it along with the model name and number and you should be able to find some help.
