In this video, pro coach Craig Bryant, explains how to return half-long serves.
Half-long serves can be very tricky to deal with, as the ball bounces just past the end of the table. Should you push or topspin? Should you take the ball earlier or later?
Craig helps to answer these questions. He has some great tips to return half-long serves and some training suggestions to help you improve.
You can get more tips from Craig on his popular Instagram page: / thettserviceguy
In the video Craig is using a JOOLA Rossi Emotion PBO-c blade and JOOLA Dynaryz AGR rubbers: bribartt.co.uk/product/joola-...
If you need any table tennis equipment, I recommend Bribar Table Tennis. Bribar stock a huge range of bats, balls, rubbers, blades, tables and more bribartt.co.uk/?ref=8204

Very nice video. Thanks a lot for these useful tips. I will try to implement them in our youth training sessions. Half long servers are quite a often unused option.

Great video. If I see it coming short, I try to flick the ball back. If it's coming long I try to go for the loop. If I'm not sure I resort to the push return but with placement. Not implying I'm great at any of this but I am slowly getting better at it. There are two issues with the half-long serve: 1) how long will it indeed be and 2) how much spin is on the serve (judge the spin wrong and the return will into the net or pop up high for an easy attack by the server.

Then perhaps you need to develop the skill of anticipating the ball. This isn't a mechanical skill, but a mind skill of focusing your mind on what's going on on the ball: how the opponent hits it, where the ball is going and going to land, predicting its trajectory and deciding whether it's attackable or not. This is what I struggle with too, and only recently I think I have some ideas about it.

@Tom: To complement this, how would you go about getting rid of the fear to hit the table with your bat. It's something I've been struggling with since day 1.

The exercise Craig shows - with the cone - is a useful one. It's harder than it looks, but will increase your confidence in playing the stroke without hitting the table. Another one I use is rolling the ball along the table back towards myself and then spinning the ball just as it leaves the table. I demonstrate this in this video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZPYontjmcR_h6s

It's the first thing going away when your fitness goes a bit off as it requires really low stance to lift backspin properly. Now I'd rather flick or push them unless the ball is high enough.
