Old guy here (72 years old). I started on a V8F back in August 2021. Following the advice from two of the how to ride videos back then, I used support to mount and launch: use support to mount, look down and center feet, then look ahead (not down), rock and forth, and while rocked back and leaning forwards, release (don't push) from support to launch. I did about 15 minutes of beginner drills, rocking back and forth to get used to how the V8F would respond, and short runs along a screened fenced. Since I knew how to ride a bicycle very slow by constantly steering for balance, I emulated that steering motion by twisting my EUC side to side (flail arms left to twist EUC right and vice versa) for balance and direction control. I was able to do a lap, then laps around a tennis court on my first attempt. Perhaps due to the nature of the V8F, I didn't get any wobbles. For some beginners, this slow speed | twisting method is almost instinctive, but for most beginners it would be better to learn at a bit faster speed and save the slow speed riding for later. For my initial dismounts, I stepped off and grabbed my V8F. Halfway through my second 30 minute session, I moved to a long outdoor parking lot, and discovered that at around 8 mph, I no longer had to make any balance corrections while riding in a straight line on smooth pavement. I relaxed and lowered my arms and I could literally just stand still. I was aware that nothing had clicked, but instead i was just going fast enough for my V8F to become self-stable, similar to a bicycle once up to a normal speed. It was only then that I tried to turn by tilting my V8F instead of a series of twists. Small tilts to see how it would respond, then a weaving pattern, then large radius turns (big parking lot), with some mid-turn corrections. I also improved my dismounts so that I just slowed to a near stop and stepped off without grabbing my V8F. I waited until my fifth 30 minute session before attempting free mount, which wasn't an issue since I could already ride. I can also ride skateboard, so was used to the motion, but most skateboarders mount with left foot on, despite which foot is dominant, and I did the same. I only step on a skateboard to launch or dismount, I use tic tacs to propel the stake board instead of stepping. What took much longer was learning to turn well, coordinating how much to lean with how much to tilt the EUC, depending on speed and turning radius. I got an 18XLV2 in April 2024, and it only took a few minutes to adjust to the weight and the difference in response, and after a couple of sessions, the 18XL felt "normal" and the V8F felt "strange".

As someone who just learned how to ride on a 70lb wheel (KS S16 Pro) I can say a few things. Take your time! You will be picking your wheel up or catching it before it falls and it will get old and tiring real quick. You will learn fast and the next day you will be better than the first so there is no need to rush. I held on to something for a full day of practice. Each time I mount the wheel I use a different foot mostly because my right leg got too tired to do all the work but it's also good to practice that. Riding an EUC is super fun and relaxing once you get the hang of it. Especially when you can slow speed steer around 90 degree corners which happens often on sidewalks.

Awesome instructional for stand up riding. Probability the best I’ve seen yet. The first part actually made me think I might try it. The part where your ankle went at a weird angle spooked me. I’ve been Onewheeling a long time and always loved manual unicycles. For me, unicycles were a sit down thing so I bought a T4 because it had a seat, off-road tire, shocks, right size and price. I found riding seated is much more difficult than standing because your legs help you control better instead of just your hips. Feels exactly like sit down hydrofoiling (Air chair) vs standup. Actually, I was after something different with a EUC. I had the idea I wanted a kind of on wheeled pit style on/off road toy so I mounted a Surron seat, grab handle, and upgraded pedals. It was a very challenging endeavor for sure. You are so right about the importance of safety gear for the confidence factor as well as it’s essential for your safety. To be honest, sitting down riding feels way safer to me because I’m closer to the ground. It took me months and a couple of falls but I absolutely love riding this thing. I now only ride sitting and I’m starting to try little Bmx track stuff. It’s absolutely a blast and I’m so glad I did this thing. I’m also glad I can have both the Onewheel, Emtb, and this thing. I’m having so much fun with these electric toys, I can hardly get myself motivated to play with my water toys anymore. Now I can “ride waves “in all different ways right from front door. Keep on charging!

I work on a computer. I need my brain and my hands to do my job. Helmet and wrist guards are mandatory since they're both so easy to seriously injure. I've had two big crashes. The first I was wearing all my gear (shins, mc jacket, mc helmet, wrists) except my gloves since it was warm and I was stupid. Crash was a pedal clip at 10 mph, flipped my feet out from under me and slammed my head, wrist, finger tips, and knees into the ground. My wrists and neck were sore but fine, I may have had a minor concussion, but the worst was the cuts all over my fingers, with one finger taking all the skin off the tip. Let me tell ya... not very easy to type with bandages all over your fingers. Second crash was a 32 mph cutout. Same gear but with my gloves. Fell forward and initially hit my left side elbow, shoulder, hip, and grazed my faceshield on the ground. Managed to stay on my shin guards and get up on my wrist sliders/gloves while I slid about 10-15 feet. Cut my elbow from the impact, hurt my shoulder, my hip eventually swelled out about 1.5", but even though my hands were planted on the ground during the slide, the gloves and wrist sliders did their job and my wrists/hands were completely fine.

Only thing I'd change about this is the suggestion of bending your knees when you're starting. The biggest issue with new riders is mounting and that initial balance without veering uncontrollably off to the side and having to jump off. We veterans know how to balance, we know the feeling of it, so bending our knees has gotten easy over time. For a new rider, bending your knees means more looseness and more muscles trying to stabilize, and as stability is lost, it means more muscles are all freaking out and moving to try and figure out how to get that balance back, which can just make things worse. IMO, new riders want to be standing tall and straight with no bend in the knees or in the waist. The only bend should be forward at the ankles to put weight in the toes and get the wheel to move forward. Try this new riders. Stand on the ground with feet shoulder length apart (as if you were on the wheel). Stand up straight and tall. Butt pushed forward and tight. Knees locked. Eyes and head looking straight ahead. Now lean forward at the ankles onto your toes. That's the position you want to be in when first mounting to maximize balance and stability. Unlike when you're on the wheel, bending forward at the ankles while standing on the ground will make you fall forward. That doesn't happen on an EUC. Doing this on a wheel accelerates the wheel, and that acceleration tries to push you back, so you're always leaning forward (at the ankles) against acceleration, making it feel like you're being held up in place as you lean forward. Mounting goes like this. Your dominant foot is on and your knee is bent with the wheel tight against the leg just as Ryan showed. When you move to mount, you first put more weight on the dominant foot's toe so as you push off, you're already engaging the motor. As you push off with your other foot and give a little hop up, straighten your dominant knee, gently lifting your other foot onto the pedal (as if you were taking a step up a curb) rather than trying to jump up to the pedal. As you're lifting, quickly lock out your dominant knee while maintaining pressure on the toes. When the second foot lands, the second knee should already be straightening up and locking out. As you get both feet on the pedals, you want to already be standing up tall, your body straight up and tight, butt pushed forward, and forward lean from the ankles to put weight on your toes to get the wheel to accelerate forward. Do not bend forward or to the sides from the waist. Keep your body straight. Braking is easy, just let the wheel's acceleration push you back so you're standing straight up again with no ankle bend and even weight distribution in your feet. Then, gently squat back as if you were sitting down on a chair to transfer weight to your heels, slowing the wheel. Once the wheel is slow enough to step down, step your non-dominant foot off the pedal back and to the side, which will naturally put weight into the dominant foot's heel to further slow and stop the wheel.... As your other foot meets the ground, the wheel comes to a stop. Before a new rider gets off the wall, they should practice the pendulum and learn how to squat back to stop the wheel. The worst thing that can happen when riding off the wall is the rider panics because they're worried they won't be able to stop, so they're far quicker to bail out if the wheel goes too fast. They need to learn to know how to slowdown and stop. A big problem with new riders is they often veer off to the side after mounting because their legs are too loose and they're leaning left and right at the waist, trying to manhandle the wheel in the direction they want. Turning and wheel lean doesn't come from bending left and right at the waist, it comes from bending the knee opposite to the direction you want to turn and twisting your upper body and head in the direction you want to go. Leaning at the waist knocks you out of balance. If the wheel starts to veer right and you attempt to lean left to try and manhandle the wheel back to vertical, it'll just make the veer to the right worse because you're naturally pushing down on your right leg as you lean your upper body left. This may cause your hips to panic and start gyrating uncontrollably. Putting more pressure into the direction of the veer, against what your brain is telling you, will cause the wheel to want to fall over to the right, and you have no choice but to bail out. Never lean at the waist when learning. If the wheel veers to the side unexpectedly, it's because something is likely bent that shouldn't be. Straighten up. If the wheel does veer off to the side, *twist* your head and body into the turn, while straightening and locking out your knees to complete the turn and straighten out again. If the wheel is veering, you're likely not standing straight over the top of the wheel with forward lean from the ankles, and you're probably bending something you shouldn't be. Bending at the waist. Bending a knee. If you're not leaning forward at the ankles, then the wheel won't accelerate, and a single wheel only can do one thing at that point... fall over.

I'm a lighter rider on heavy wheels haha so yes! When that wheel starts to tilt one direction (making you go sideways) you need to learn the way you want to go, then quickly twist the wheel (slightly) the way you are leaning. Heavy wheels are like this until you're familiar with the riding. You've got it, man! And practicing on grass will be slightly more difficult because of the inconsistency of terrain (bumps, uneven ground, resistance when twisting the wheel on grass)

Those are the universal BD pads. I’ve got two sets & one set is on the Falcon. I’m going to have to try his pad placement though!
@Standard41305 ай бұрын
BTW, I don’t think ride mode matters that much in learning…. Some people say Hard is best for learning because it keeps the pedals level and removes one more variable that you have to learn & compensate for.

@@Standard4130 @TheBergMan I don't have my Falcon yet, but should I order a pair of these BD pads? I've heard the stock pads are terrible and won't even accommodate most boots or high-top shoes.

@@Standard4130 What about tire pressure? Should I start out with the tire pressure listed on the side of the tire or lower?
@Standard41305 ай бұрын
@@reducedgravity I rode with the stock pads for 120miles before I changed over. They were just fine for my feet wearing Vans, skating shoes. However, it might be a problem with boots but IDK as I just use tennis shoes on this wheel. I switched to try something different and get more “locked in”. Which you probably don’t need to concern yourself with locking in just yet as a beginner.

I recommend making fail videos so you can see what needs improvement (usually stand up straight and eyes forward, not down) or just to watch your progression years from now.

People be leading new riders astray with all the EXCESSIVE Leaning forward. (like the thumbnail) New riders you simply apply pressure forward to go and apply pressure back to brake. All that EXCESSIVE leaning is unnecessary and will get you injured.
@TheBergMan5 ай бұрын
@truthiscensored i didn't mislead anyone anywhere 😀 the thumbnail is something I would have been attracted to as a new rider. It brings clicks which will hopefully bring in new riders! Further the sport!
