In this Rigs, Jigs & Lures episode, I go over step-by-step how to rig a trolling skirt, also known as a ballyhoo skirt. This is one of the most common and best fishing lures used throughout the world as an additive attractant for fresh bait that is trolling. Tried and true to it's original design, shape and form, whether it is used with or without fresh bait, this lure is the go-to lure if you want to catch more fish . Used for deep sea fishing, charter fishing and offshore fishing, this lure can't be beat. If you troll, you've more than likely seen this lure... So here's some advice and tips on how to rig it up and put it to use.
Enjoy,
Tight lines & good vibes.

Hi Heath, That was another great "How To" video. I'm sure that you have taught many anglers how to make rigs that have caught hundreds of pelagic fish. I bet the fish hate you. LOL Keep up the good work and stay safe down there building those mobile hospitals. Most of the towns along the Jersey shore have closed the beaches and made it difficult to fish. I'm just staying home until the virus is long gone. Take care, Mickey

Hi Mickey, I'm land locked for the time being too... So I'm sure the fish are really gonna dislike me when this is all over. I'm working on some short seminars right now... And a few other nifty ideas that should spark some interest. It's giving me time for self reflection and to really examine the knowledge I've gained and how I can properly share it. Hope all is well with your family. Take care & stay healthy :)

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Yeah health and family are the most important. We are all good up here I have to be extra careful not to bring anything home to my family as I am a first responder. My brother and I are hoping that everything opens up by the end of May so that we can bring our Cape Horn 24xs down to Florida to do some fishing. Our parents live in Brevard county and we fish from Cape Canaveral down to Fort Pierce. If we make it down we should try to hook up and do some offshore fishing. Take care and you and your family stay safe.

Is the inside of your sinker smooth enough not to damage rhe line? Becasue i only use fluro. Why not insert a rubber sleeve? Your videos are awesomly simple and clear.

Thanks a boat load for watching and asking an excellent question. I have yet to have a problem with the inline egg sinker chaffing the leader. You have to be selective, because yes they can have sharp edges that need to be cleaned up. You do need some weight, not just a sleeve, to hold the lure down just below the surface when you are trolling. Otherwise, it'll pop out of the water too often, creating an unnatural look, and thus, reduce your hook up ratio. If you're apprehensive about using standard lead egg sinkers, you can purchase tungsten weights, or chrome bullet heads. Both of these options are polished and have a smooth finish on the inside. Hope this helps. Always great to hear from you and I really appreciate your support. Tight lines & take care ;)

@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and asking a good question... the answer is No. I troll it just the way you saw it rigged... I use a #5 snap swivel tied to the main line of the reel and then the lure which is apprx 6 feet long, slays all day long. The only time I use wind-on's and trolling lead is for high speed trolling for wahoo. Take care & tight lines :)

Would you use a planner with this rig also ? 20 feet or so of leader line off the planner ?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching and asking a great question. The answer is yes I use this rig with the planer sometimes... However, instead of a mono leader I use about 18 inches of wire leader and that a has a 100 feet of 60 pound test leader off the planer. 20 feet off the planer is too close. Hope this helps. Is there a difference in this rig if you use it with a planer? Do you still use a one ounce weight? Thank you for duchess great instruction.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 жыл бұрын
It's the same rig if you use it was a planer. Using the 1 oz weight in the head still applies. The only thing you have to make sure is that you have a hundred foot leader from your planer to your lure. Hope this helps

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thank you Heath. Do you use bridles when planer fishing? If so do you have a video for making or using them? I do prefer to reel fish in with the rod instead of handling if possible. Your thoughts about using a bridle system vs handling? Thank you for making an effort to respond. You’ve been a great help and resource.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimdrechsel3611 I don't use bridles. The issue I've had with them in the past is that when you reel them pass the top guide of the fishing reel is that they get chafed and they tend to be compromised and if the fish takes a run they immediately snap off. I know everybody talks greatly about being able to real in the fish directly from your line. But speaking from years of experience with this method... Unfortunately handling in your fish I find to be the most successful way. Check out the video where I hand line in that 54 lb wahoo with pretty much no problem. Lots of KZbinrs skip out the facts and I honestly try not to mislead anybody when it comes to being successful at fishing. Thanks for having faith and what I say and questions that hopefully I can answer for you

What poundage mono are you using? How about Flourocarbon?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and asking a great question. I typically use 40 lb mono or fluoro... when I'm trolling I don't really use a fluoro leader, but that's just me. I also, bump it up to 60 lb test durning the summer months, because marlin roam my area and the corners of their mouths are sharp. Honestly, fluorocarbon gives you a more stealthy approach, however, I've never really noticed a difference in hook-up ratio... especially with trolling. Always a pleasure to hear from you. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)

I enjoy all your videos, this one included; but I'm confused as to why GPS "ground speed" is more relevant to a pelagic denizen than "water speed." Just as "air speed" is what's important to an airplane pilot, not ground speed, it seems that water speed would be the only speed a lure or fish would be affected by. If your GPS speed (over ground) is 6 knots and you're bucking a 3 knot Gulfstream current, then your "water speed" is 9 knots. Please enlighten me and I apologize in advance for seeming like an inveterate 'Hair Splitter." My family tells me that if I live long enough (I'm 76) , eventually I will be wrong about something. Perhaps this is it. LOL
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 3 ай бұрын
Water speed is manipulated by the current. So if you're going against the current your water speed will increase. If you go with the current, your water speed is slower than what your reading is. Fish are in the water. They are over their ground space which is the sea floor. You move against the ground to get a real time speed, the water speed is a false reading of how fast you are moving. Hope this helps 😁
