There are 2 very large chestnuts bordering my property (the owner planted them years ago, but never built a home there and never comes down). I was unaware they were chestnuts until I started reading about them. They fall all over my yard, makes it difficult to mow the grass. And boy are they prickly! Gonna go pick some off the ground and give it a try roasting them. Thanks for the video!

From the UK here. 🇬🇧 We have loads of chestnut trees here in the UK, and every local park that was designed in the Victorian era has given us a bounty. However, we also have the "horse chestnut" which is a Chinese variety and you definitely don't eat them. 😜 As kids we all play 'conkers' which is a UK game that places the 'conkers' (horse chestnut) on the end of a string and we have to bash your opponent's nut off their string 😆 Chestnuts over Christmas time is a traditional thing here. Glad you guys are joining the throng. Merry Christmas everyone ❤️

More like "rejoining" the throng. If it weren't for the blight, the tradition would have carried on to this day.

This video brought back so many memories of my Dad roasting chestnuts this time of year. He loved them and sometimes he just couldn't wait for them to rest a few minutes and would bite down on one. I'm sure he scored them but maybe not deep enough and I remember that he had 2 over the many years pop in his mouth, blistering him pretty good. Thanks for showing and explaining the process in detail! God Bless You Very Much and Merry Christmas! I 🙏❤

I'm just wondering if the water the nuts were boiled in could be used as a dye for fabric . On the subject of nuts in general you can cook hazelnuts by scooping a hollow in the ground , lining it with sand , put the nuts in the hollow, cover with more sand and light a small fire on top . I hear they have the feel of cooked potatoes.

By the way...from what I understand, American Chestnut trees will sooner or later die from the blight, which hangs around. Chinese Chestnuts are NOT affected by the blight, so that makes them a good choice to plant. I live just up the road from you, in the Smokies, and got my tree at the Master Gardener's Plant Sale. What a find! Dollywood is sponsoring research on eradicating the blight.

I was under the impression that there were no fruit bearing American Chestnuts left. If that is really an American Chestnut, not a European(Chinese)Chestnut, it is truly amazing. Also they are not like oaks. They have the strategy of making more and more and then even more each year. Where oaks will have a few years of low productivity and then a boom year. So if you grow chestnuts or if you are in the ozarks or that area you can grow chinquapin. Same kinda thing but smaller. You will have better harvests each year. For American chestnuts it’ll cost a lot more but the American chestnut foundation can hook you up. For the chinquapin you want the ozark chinquapin foundation. Difference in price is a lot. Looks like $300 for the American chestnut foundation for seeds or seedlings. $30 for the ozark chinquapin foundation. 3 to 6 seeds per year with the $30. You only get seeds with them but they arrive ready to plant. Careful to not break the roots on either when handling or planting. Both trees are worth saving but if you don’t have time or money and just want something there are hybrids you can get on the cheap that’ll do just fine. Plant in rocky well draining soil. If blackberries grow in your area you should be good. No standing water.
