The guy instructing here deserves credit as the technique he shows here is simpler than all the others demonstrated even by ex and current serving forces. Nicely done.

My personal opinion, the top method uses way more energy than underneath. I feel like I can put more of my weight on my legs rather than my arms underneath.

is this harder or easier than the other way (where you have your body dangling from the bottom of the rope)?

This requires less strength, but more technique. I did it this way 25 years ago when I served in the Norwegian military. A lot of the guys before me on the obstacle course tried dangling below the rope, but most of them seemed to fall into the mud below. We had been on a sort of hell day and were pretty exhausted. I remember concluding or learning then that doing it under the rope would require more strength than I had. A lot of guys got no longer than halfway. Problem with going over the rope is that it is very wobbly. You really need to make sure one leg hangs loose. Also if you are like me and have a fear of hights, it kind of sucks because you easily look down and it feels very unstable being on top of the rope. But if you can just focus on the moves you got to do and look forward, it works. I managed to get over on first try with this technique.

make sure your shirt is tucked in and/or pulled down. I got rope burns on my tummy when my shirt was open I did this as a teenager.
